Summary

.
In general, a gas sample is “complex” when it
contains:
• Saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons > C6
• Permanent gases (He, H2, O2, Ar, N2, CO, CO2)
• Sulfur components (H2S, COS, mercaptans)
• Concentrations that can vary significantly (especially H2)

Examples of complex gas samples

• Refinery gas – discussed further
• Extended natural gas (O2-N2, CO, or He/H2 separation)
• Samples with high levels of H2, air components, and CO2

All require separations on more than 2 columns,

whether laboratory, process GC.

.
List of Component according to UOP 539 -12
• Hydro carbons : C1 - C6 + composite, saturated and unsaturated
• Sulfur components : H2 S
• Hydrogen : Low ppm up to percentage levels
• Permanent gases : He, Ar, O2, N2, CO and CO2
