Content Objectives (CO): (What do you want students to learn?)

Domain and range of a function.
Algebra I,
2.A determine the domain and range of a linear function in mathematical problems;
determine reasonable domain and range values for real-world situations, both
continuous and discrete; and represent domain and range using inequalities;

Language Objectives (LO):

Listening : Students will receive instruction and some explanations verbally.
In the activity “Find Someone Who”, students will practice their ability to
communicate verbally and listen their classmates.
Reading : Students will receive handout with written instructions and slide will
be projected with instructions. They will be able to read the definition of function in
the slide.
Writing : students will need to write their own definition of relationship as an
entrance ticket and what they learned as an exit ticket.
Speaking : Students will do “Find Someone Who…” activity where they will need
to find someone who can give them explanations and/or examples of vocabulary.
Key Vocabulary: 5-7 words. Maximum 10
1. Relationship
2. Function
3. Dependent
4. Independent
5. Range
6. Domain
7. Input
8. Output
Activation: A Canvas of Opportunity: Before the Lesson

Student Directions: (What will students be doing?)

 Entrance Ticket: Students will pick up at the entrance of the classroom a piece of paper
where they will write down their definition of relationship.
- This activity will set their minds on working and learning. Students will understand
that at the moment they walk in to the classroom, there is a preparation and a lesson
created for them.
 Once everyone is on their seats, random participation will be asked to share their
definition to the whole class.
Teacher Facilitation:( What will the teacher be doing?)
 Teacher will be at the entrance directing students to take the Entrance ticket.
 Teacher will ask for participation and moderate the answers with the purpose of reach
the vocabulary words of the lesson plan on a casual conversation with the class.

- ELL students will make use of their prior knowledge on the vocabulary to construct a
new math concept.

Connections: The Broad & Narrow Strokes of Learning: During the

Lesson. This is where you do the “teaching”/demonstration

Student Directions:
 Students will pay attention to the introduction of domain and range explained on
terms of the car/gasoline and plant/water functions.
 Lecturing will take turn. Students are expected to be participative and add question as
the lecturing goes.
Teacher Facilitation:
 Teacher will connect examples of car/gasoline and plant/water function with domain
and range. Teacher will explain domain and range in terms of input and output and
Function Machine will be introduced.

- ELL will found relevant the explanation on terms and scenarios common for them.
- The use of cognates and simple words as plant, water, car, gasoline will facilitate ELL
students in the process of learning using background knowledge.
Affirming: A Gallery of Understanding: After the Lesson
(Summative Assessment of Student Learning) How will students show you what
they have learned?

Student Directions:
 Students will receive the handout to the activity “Find Someone Who…”.
 They will the need to walk around looking someone who could give them examples or
defitions of the 8 key words. They will receive and give the explanation or example
verbally, but ask for the signature on the paper.
 Exit Ticket: they will write what they learned durin toda class and share their answers
voluntarilly.
Teacher Facilitation:
 Teachers will walk around facilitating students during the activity “Find Someone Who…”
 After some minutes where everyone has some definitions and examples, the teacher will
ask students the name of the person who signed under a term and call that name to share
his/her explanation or definition to the whole class.

- As a closure of the lesson, teacher will connect vocabulary on math application on

graphing. The connection will take place explaining the parent function of absolute
value.
- The purpose of this connection is to give ELL students a glance of domain and range on
graphing and motivate them and make them realize that a previous full understanding
of vocabulary facilitates the comprehension of a complex topic.
- ELL students will have the need of communicate with the class, but on their own terms
and without feel the spotlight above them, which will make them more comfortable to
do performance errors.
