Linear Function

I. Evaluate each function.

a) If f(x) = x + 3, find f(-2).

−5𝑥+2
b) If g(x) = 3 , find g(1)

II. Set up a function for each given situation:

1. The cost of playing golf in Chateau Royale Golf Club is 500 pesos per hour and
requires a one-time membership fee of 1000 pesos. Write a function that shows the
relationship between the number of hours playing golf x and the total fee y.

2. An airplane 30,000 feet above the ground begins descending at a rate of 2,000 feet
per minute. Write a function that models the relationship between the altitude of the
plane A and the time in minutes M.

succeeding kilometer or a fraction of it.
Kevin is a guest in Chateau Royale and he needs to go to Robinsons Tagaytay to
purchase some goods. The distance between Chateau Royale and Robinsons
Tagaytay is exactly 14km. The jeepney driver told Kevin that he must pay a fare of
40 pesos since he is a regular passenger. Do you think Kevin paid the right amount?
Why or why not?

lesson
The fare for regular passenger is ₱8.00 for the first 4km and an additional fare of
₱1.50 per kilometer for the succeeding kilometer or a fraction of it.

The distance between Chateau Royale and Robinsons Tagaytay is 14km.

Step 2: Identify which variable is dependent and which is independent.

Dependent variable: Distance in kilometers

Independent: Jeepney fare in pesos

Step 3: We write the function that best describes the relationship between the
variables in the problem.

8, 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑥 ≤ 4
𝑦={
8 + 1.5(𝑥 − 4), 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 4

Step 4: What is the unknown?

The fare for a distance of 14km.

Step 5: Solve for the unknown.
y = 8 + 1.50(x – 4)
y = 8 + 1.50(14 – 4)
y = 8 + 1.50(10)
y = 23

The Jeepney fare for 14km is ₱23.00. Therefore, we can say that Kevin did not pay
the right amount, he paid more than ₱23.00.

Example 1:

Using the given information above, consider this problem:

If the distance from Chateau Royale to Nasugbu town proper is 20km, how much the
jeepney fare would be?

Example 2:

“German Shepherd”

Alex own a newly-born German Shepherd. Suppose the dog weighs 1kg. at birth.
You’ve known from a friend that the monthly average weight gained by the dog is
5kg. If the rate of increase of the dog’s weight every month is constant, determine
the function that will describe the dog’s weight. What is the weight of the Dog after
three months?

a. Write an equation that best models Kent’s distance from home, d in km, if
he has walked a total of t minutes on his trip home that day.

concepts and skills The class will be divided in 6 groups. Group 1, 2, and 3 will solve problem 1 and
in daily living Group 4, 5, and 6 will solve problem 2.
After solving the problem in each group, all group members will find a partner from
other group to ask the question to his/her chosen partner and to discuss the
solution.

Problem 1:
One of the pools in Chateau Royale contains 1000 Liters of water. It is being
drained at a constant speed of 40 liters per minute.
a. Write a linear function W for the number of liters of water in the pool after t
minutes of draining.
b. How many liters of water are in the pool after 11 minutes?

Problem 2:
The cost and revenue functions of a particular brand of a box of chalk are given by
C(x) = 20x + 4000 and R(x) = 60x + 2000 respectively, where x is the number of
chalk box produced and sold.
a. How many box/boxes of chalk must be produced and sold to break even?
b. What is the minimum number of box of chalk should the company produced
and sold so that it is certain that the company will gain an income?

the lesson problems?
C. Evaluating learning (If time permits)

Solve the given problem.

Sarah earns ₱42.00 an hour in a dress factory with an additional of ₱50.00 for her
daily meal allowance. Solve the following:
a. Write a function that models her earning for one day. Use y for her total earning
for one day and x for the number of hours.
b. How much will she earn if she worked for 8 hours on a particular day?
c. Suppose she earned a total of ₱260.00 on a Monday, how long did she work
for that day?
