Answer all the Questions: (10x2=20)

1. Functions of compression rings in piston?

Sealing the combustion chamber so that there is minimal loss of gases to
the crank case. Improving heat transfer from the piston to
the cylinder wall. Regulating engine oil consumption by scraping oil from
the cylinder walls back to the sump.

2. What is pre-ignition and Performance number?

Pre-ignition is a situation in which the fuel-air mixture in a
spark ignition engine ignites before the timed spark, because of contact
with a hot surface. Pre-ignition might be the consequence of the spark
plug tip getting too hot. Octane number is the ability of resistance of a
fuel to knocking in to Iso-octane, which has octane number 100 and has
high anti-knock quality.

3. What is meant by double-declutching?

shifting gears used primarily for vehicles with an unsynchronized manual
transmission, such as commercial trucks and specialty vehicles.

4. What is the Principle of synchromesh gear box?

In a gearbox, there is always a difficulty in engaging the stationary gear
with the gears already rotating at a high speed. The principle states that
“Before engaging the gears they are brought in frictional contact with
each other and after equalizing the speed the engagement is done.”

5. What is meant by rolling ,pitching and bouncing

Roll is, well, roll. It is the movement of a car’s body that defines how
well a car can distribute its weight while turning
rod is rotated clockwise or anticlockwise, the car will also rotate with that
rod. That rotation is called pitch.
Bouncing is move quickly up, back, or away from a surface after hitting
it.
6. What are the components of front axle and shapes of Stub axles
A stub axle is one of the two front axles that carries a wheel in a rear
wheel drive vehicle. The axle is capable of limited angular movement
about the kingpin for steering the vehicle. The stub axle consists of wheel
bearings which support the wheel hub.

7. Working principle of master cylinder

The master cylinder is a control device that converts non-
hydraulic pressure (commonly from a driver's foot) into hydraulic
pressure. This device controls slave cylinders located at the other end of
the hydraulic system.

8. What is meant by self energization in braking system

A self-energizing brake according to claim 1, wherein said movable
member is a brake disk disposed between a relatively stationary brake
shoe and a relatively movable brake shoe, and wherein said first and
second actuating means include two hydraulic pressure cylinders.

9. Define contact breaker and regulator

A switching device used in the distributor of an internal-combustion

engine which controls the timing of the spark that ignites the spark plug

10.What are the tests carried out in battery to know condition of that.
Battery testing is very beneficial to all of us so, before discussion we
must know the basics of this. In this contemporary epoch, batteries are
very important as they are store house of power backup and are portable.
They provide energy when there is no electricity supply and store power
for future use.

Unit -5
9. a) Explain the working principle of DC generator with neat sketch? (7)
b) Distinguish between battery & magneto ignition system? (4)
In battery ignition system a battery and ignition coil is used to
generate spark at spark plug but in magneto ignition system necessary
energy is generated by its own electric generator. It is mounted
on the engine and replaces all component of battery ignition
system except spark plug.
