Inquiry Report

In this assessment you will undertake a full Inquiry, based on one of the option topics
provided, and produce a written report of no more than 800 words or a 8 minute oral or
multimodal equivalent.

Students will have the opportunity to:

1. Develop and modify geographically significant questions to frame an inquiry. (GQS –
OQP)
2. Propose and justify a response. (GKU2/3)
3. Evaluate alternative views on a geographical challenge and alternative strategies to
address this challenge using environmental, social and economic criteria and (GKU2)
4. Students present findings, arguments and explanations using relevant geographical
terminology and graphic representations in a range of appropriate communication
forms. (GQS – C)
5. They evaluate their findings and propose action in response to a contemporary
geographical challenge taking account of environmental, economic and social
considerations. (GQS – RR)
6. They explain the predicted outcomes and consequences of their proposal. (GQS – RR)

Option Topics
1. Fracking in the Northern Territory
2. Nuclear Waste dumping in South Australia

Section 1: Posing, evaluating and modifying an inquiry question (GQS – OQP)

Task1:
Question Generation. Use the following concept map to brainstorm ideas around
your chosen option topic.

Task 2:
Use your brainstorm to generate a BIG research question – it can start with HOW, WHY, TO WHAT EXTENT or SHOULD. Explain
what your question is about. (GQS – OQP)

Task 3:
Evaluate and enhance your question. (GQS – OQP)
Evaluation Evaluation Criteria Yes No Action Required and taken – new question
Area

Is the question a LITTLE or BIG research

question?
Succinctness
Are there phrases that can be replaced by
single words or shorter phrases?

Does the question have only ONE possible

meaning?

Clarity Does the question lose meaning because

there is too much specific information
included?

Is the question about the inquired topic and

concepts?
Depth
Is the question about one or more concepts?

Task 4:
Adjusted Question
Section 2: Inquiry Report: Follow the scaffold below

___
1. Introduction/Geographic Context (PROBLEM): (GKU2) (GQS – C)
Here you will introduce the issue you will be inquiring about?
 What is the issue?
 Why is it a problem?
 Differing opinions
 Include maps to demonstrate geographical location

2. Causal Factors (OBJECTIVE): (GQS – C)

In this section you will use the following smart art to demonstrate your knowledge of the
causal factors of the issue. Why is there an issue?

Human
Factors
3. Implications of the issue (CHOICES): (GQS – C)
In this section you will discuss the social, economic and environmental implications of your
inquired topic. Be sure to address issues across a local, national and global scale.

Section 3: Design and Create (GQS – C)
In this section you are to synthesise your Inquiry and answer your individual
research question. You have creative freedom as to how you wish to do this.
You may like to present it as an extended response, poster, news report,
advertisement etc.
Be sure to include the information you have collected throughout your
inquiry to strengthen your work. Your final presentation should link your
ideas to the 7 Geographical concepts where possible.
