Areas for Improvement with Pre-Assessment – Maths Unit

Perimeter

 Unsure of definition
 Some identified perimeter as the dimensions (eg. 6 m x 2 m), not the sum of the outside
lengths
 Not identifying sides that are not labelled
 Calculation errors – multiplying rather than adding
 Not using units, or incorrect use of units (units squared, etc.)
 Unsure of how to break down composite shapes

Area

 Unsure of definition – one misconception was the synonym for ‘place’ (common usage)
 Calculation errors – area same as the perimeter
 Not using units, or incorrect use of units (units squared, units cubed, etc.)
 Unsure of how to break down composite shapes

Volume

 Unsure of definition – some knew it was related to perimeter, area, or size, but unsure how
specifically, whilst others connected it to weight or how much the shape could hold
(capacity)
 When calculating the sugar cube example, some counted the number of squares on the
faces, or on the visible faces. Not interpreting the 3D cube aspect
