Subject: A MODEST PROPOSAL FOR GUN OWNERS
Recently the Gabby Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence released some figures which
indicate how expensive itis losing victims
of Gun Violence in murders and woundings. It costs public treasuries about $700,000 per murder
victim and $100,000 per gunshot wound
victim. With roughly 36,000 gunshot murder victims per year in the U.S. and twice that number of
woundings, taxpayers across the U.
are handed an annual bill of $30 billion. That money is spent on autopsies, medical and surgical
costs, police and investigative costs
and legal and court expenditures. It's not cheap getting killed or wounded by a gun
‘There are approximately 300 million guns in the U.S. and if each owner paid an annual fee or’
‘tax of $1,000 the annual cost of gun
violence nationally could be paid for by the primary players of this sport, After all, golfers pay green
fees to have fun, bowlers pay charges
to use bowing alleys, and so on. Why shouldn't gun owners also pay to play their game? Why
should the taxpayers have to foot the
bill when.
This is not to moralize or preach about murder or mayhem. Nor will | get into whether it is a
good thing for the public
to pay for lifetime care for a person who is paralyzed from a gunshot wound. Thats their problem
anyway, not mine. | will not invoke one of
The Ten Commandments, “Thou Shalt not Kill.” And | will not point out that itis illegal to shoot to
death or maim someone with a gun.
{will leave those arguments to book-thumpers and goody two-shoes who have nothing better to do
than poke their smelly noses
into other peoples' business.
This is only about money and nothing else. As a conservative, it makes me smoke that my
hard-earned dollars are paying for people
who get to have all the fun with guns and then expect everyone else to pay for their enjoyment, If
people with guns aren't willing to
pay for the costs of having them, they can always turn their guns in. Now isn't that fair?
‘This is certainly a better proposal than Sherif Jeff Gahlers plan to have a cartain ich person’
when said person
doesr't even own a gun. Or does he think itis everyone else's or one person's duly topay fora’
Tew people's sick habits?
