THE AMERICAN COLONIAL RULE

HISTORY OF AMERICA
In 1898, the United States declared was on Spain, ultimately resulting in what is
called the Treaty of Paris, in which the Spanish agreed to give up the island of the
Philippines in exchange for $20,000,000. The Philippines had been ruled by the
Spanish for nearly years. During first years, there were some conflicts and the Filipinos
fought alongside the Americans. After WWI ended, the U.S. continued to rule over the
Philippines commonwealth of the U.S. The United States agreed to give the Philippines
10 years to prepare for their complete independence. But because of WWI and the
Japanese invasion of the Philippines, that promise was not realized until 1946. On July
4, 1946, the United States declared the Philippines an independent nation. Now, the
relation between Americans and Filipinos are very friendly and warm. Filipinos love
America and Americans. They often decorate their jeepney`s with American flags or
“God Bless the USA”. They also enjoy American music and clothing, while still retaining
their own Filipino way of life.

Taft Commision- the Second Philipppine Commision sent by the US President William
McKinley in preparation for the establishment of a civil government.
Magna Carta of the Philippines - issued by the US President which embodied the
basic democratic principles underlying the American Policy.
William Howard Taft- the later president of the United States was appointed the first
civilian governor general.
General Arthur MacArthur- he replaced in Military Governor in 1901.
THE PHILIPPINE BILL OF 1902
The first U.S. Congressional act concerning the government of the Philippines was the
passage of the Philippines Bill of 1902.

Woods Forbes Mission- the third Philippine Commission
Warren G. Harding- he became president
- Appointed a special mission composed of Gen. Leonard Wood and William

October 5, 1921- Leonard Wood returned in Manila as governor general.
Leonardo Wood- he abolished the democratic privileges given to the Filipino
Gov Harrison- he form the Calvary Cabinet or Khaki Cabinet composed of U.S

THE REORGANIZATION OF THE SUPREME COURT DURING THE
EARLY AMERICANO PERIOD
May 1, 1898- the U.S. Asian Squardo led by Commodore George Dewey destroyed
the Spanish forces in the historic Battle of Manila Bay.
Governor-General Basilio de San Agustin - he in order to get the support of
prominent Filipinos in the Spanish American War.
May 9, 1898- signed the gubernatorial decree
Doble Cara or Duplicity- became a popular political and diplomatic game
Commodore George Dewey- he is the commander of the U.S. Asiatic Squadon
General Wesley Merrit- he is the first United States Military Governor of the
Philippibes and declared that existing municipal, civil, and criminal laws be enforced
Cayetano Arellano- he is the President of Supreme Court
Don Manuel Arellano- he is the headed the Civil Branch
Don Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista- he is the head of the Criminal Branch but he
did not assume office for the reason that he was with the Filipino revolutionists in
Tarlac.
Don Julio Llorente- he replaced in the head of the Criminal Branch

Diplomat John Paton David- “ in the America People`s Republic of China”
Japan triangle before 1941.
Corregidor During The Spanish Period- the tadpole shaped defensive fort of three
miles of island at the mouth of Manila Bay.
Corregidor- the site of Spanish dockyard and naval hospital before 1789 built a
lighthouse in 1836 with a beam range of thirty-three miles to monitor and eventually
to warm Manila from the enemy and pirate ships.
Fortress- it is composed of 280 heavy armed marines, most of them are Filipinos;
commissioned and non-commissioned officers were Spanish.

WAR IN THE PACIFIC
July 26,1941- before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Philippines reserve and
regular forces were commissioned into the Unites Staes Army under General Douglas
MacArthur.
United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) - combination of Filipino and
American Forces.
December 8, 1941- the battle stations in Corrigidor had received the following news.
1. Japanese carrier forces strikes Peral Harbor!
2. Thailand surrender to japanes troops
3. The battle of the Philippines begins: Japanese bombers blast clark field, 60 miles
of North of Manila.
December 9-10- the battle stations in correridor woke up by those bad news.
1. Malaya invaded and Guam captured!
2. Japanese make initial landings in the Philipines, striking the beaches of Vigan,
Ilocos Sur and Apari on the North.
December 22, 1941- Japanese advancing forces made their major landings at
Lingayen, Pangasinan
Japanese Forces- they come from the North via Lingayen and the Enemy forces
coming from the South via Lamon Bay
MILITARY ORDER NO.2
The Japanese educational policy was enacted through military order no-2, promoting
the Filipino culture, spiritual enrichment among the Filipino families, propagating of
Japanese languages.
Jose P. Laurel- he added the compulsory teaching of the fundamentals principles of
militant nationalism and nationalist credo among thye Filipino youth to boost their
morale in the midst of war.
Filipino Youth- they became HUKBALAHAP (Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon)
guerrilla
General Edward P. King- he is the Commander of the ALLIED forces in Bataan
composed of 78,000 soldiers, surrendered.
Death March- a horror march, also known as the Mariveles Massacre, it began
immediately after the fall of Bataan.
ECONOMICS CONDITION
The economic activities were limited into agricultural and buy and sell business. Cars,
even horses were confiscated by the Japanese. There is a sack full of Mickey Mouse
Money to buy a few gantas of rice. Inflation expected during the war.
BIBA (Bigasang Bayan)- it recognized to control the production.
Malnutrition- was one of the common problems confronting Filipinos families.
Kangkong (aquatic Vegetables) - a common food to fight hunger.
SOCIAL CONDITION
The social conditions of the Filipinos during the war can be felt and internalized from the
words from President Manuel Roxas during the inaugural address on Juky 4, 1946.
RECONQUERING MANILA
Major General Mudge- he was the Commanding General of the first Calvary at
Guimba.
February 3, 1945- the time that American Soldiers together with their Filipino comrades
were within 15miles of Manila.
September 2, 1945- less than the month after bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
Emperor Hirohito of Japan had accepted the continual surrender offered by the allied
forces and the war in Asian Pacific was over.
