Deep Creek Bushwalking Performance

Purpose
It is intended that this experience will provide a framework for the development of expedition skills in planning,
preparation, participation and leadership. There are two parts to this assessment:
 Your engagement in the 3-day bushwalk in Deep Creek Conservation Park both as a participant and leader under
supervision.
 Leading a micro tutorial while on the bushwalk in Deep Creek Conservation Park.

Topic Learning Outcomes Addressed

 Demonstrate understanding of the organisational aspects of conducting an educational camping experience.

 Demonstrate knowledge of the contribution of outdoor education in the development and conduct of an integrated

educational programme.
 Use personal camping, bushwalking, and outdoor recreational skills at a leadership level.

 Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures and legal implications in outdoor education experiences.

Part 1: Micro Tutorials

As part of the practical assessment on the bushwalk you are required to present a micro-tutorial to the rest of your
expedition group. Guidelines for micro-tutorial presentations:
 Independently research one aspect of the environment.
 Prepare a handout that fills 1 double-sided page (may choose to present this as a pamphlet) including references.
 Send an electronic copy of this to your expedition leader and topic coordinator prior to the trip.
 Send an electronic copy of the summary sheet to students prior to the trip.
During the expedition, present a small tutorial on your topic. It is suggested that you choose an appropriate ‘teaching
moment’ where possible. Your topic will have more relevance if presented when there is an example of your topic to
be seen. Be as creative as you like to engage other members of the group in your topic. Micro Tutorial Topics are
provided below:

Part 2: Bushwalking Performance

During the bushwalk you will be assessed on you practical performance. Marking will be associated with a range of
criteria that would be relevant to consider if continuing with a leadership certificate associated with bushwalking. Criteria
is outlined in the marking guideline and is related to personal camp craft, technical leadership skills and interpersonal
leadership skills.
