A History of Our Library Dansville Public Library

In 1872 Village leaders
organized the first public li-
brary, established in rented
rooms with 1,300 volumes
compared with over
30,000 items today. In
1874 the Library re-located
to the second floor of the
Maxwell Block. The Library
Association of Dansville is-
sued shares of stock under
the corporate name “Living-
ston Circulating Library”. In
1893, the University of the
State of New York granted
the Library a charter as a
school district public, under
the Department of Educa-
tion. In 1920 the Shepard
Homestead on the corner of
Main and Perine Streets
was gifted to the communi-
ty. After remodeling and
dedication at the library’s
50th anniversary, the Shep-
ard Memorial Building be-
came our Library home in
1924.
Over the years several
projects maintained and up-
graded the library. These
included creation of the chil-
dren’s room and caretaker’s
apartment completed in
1937 with funds from Gen-
eral Charles M. Reeve.
More recent upgrades to the
building funded by special
grants were installation of a
handicap ramp, 1985;
complete rewiring of the
Shepard building, 1987;
remodeling upstairs for the
Local History collection,
1990; a new heating sys-
tem, 1995; and remodeling
of the children’s room,
1998. Improvements in
technology as well as new
uses of space for tutors and
students, collections of au-
dios and videos coupled
with increased demand for
programs were quickly fol-
lowed by the arrival of com-
puters and automation. At
the end of the century, the
Library Trustees created the
2000 Millennium Planning
Committee to prepare for a
major expansion of the ex-
isting Library. Following ex-
tensive planning and fund-
raising, construction of an
addition to the Shepard
building began in Decem-
ber 2010. The Shepard
building was renovated and
historic features restored
while the new addition was
under construction. At last,
Dansville Public Library,
now consisting of the Shep-
ard Memorial and the new
Saunders Family Library,
opened for service in No-
vember 2011.
Dansville Public Library
circulates more than
58,000 books, CDs, DVDs,
magazines and E-books ev-
ery year. The Library is
chartered to serve more
than 10,140 people from
Dansville and the nine sur-
rounding townships of the
school district. More than
4400 borrowers are regis-
tered and on average 30
new users are added month-
ly.

BSB Serves Brews, Preserves Past
In 1870, the Dansville
and Mount Morris Railroad
began operation, a 15-mile
standard-gauge short-line
that ran independently until
it was sold in 1985. Since
then, the Dansville Mt. Mor-
ris depot has remained un-
used, a priceless historical
building, and a repository
of local history and tradi-
tion. Long in need of resto-
ration, the depot has re-
emerged as the Battle Street
Brewery. It is a place that
renews the glories of the
past and kindles new friend-
ships. It truly embodies the
spirit of Dansville and Liv-
ingston County.
After winning a grant
through the Brew in Living-
ston competition Battle
Street Brewery celebrated

May 19 th, 2018 with a
great variety of craft beers,
4 live bands, a food truck,
and an amazing get togeth-
er for the community. BSB is
a farm brewery, which
means they are required to

dients from New York. They
also have the opportunity to
sell other New York State
products. When people
come to the brewery, they
can expect excellent craft
beers, guest ciders, wines,
and cocktails, as well as a
growing food menu to in-
clude flatbread pizzas, Ba-
varian pretzels, a char-
cuterie board, beer cheese
soup made with their own
beer, and the “best wings in
town”!
Tours of the brewery are
lead by the tasting room
staff. They are exciting and
filled with information about
what each room was used
for in the days of the train
system and how they are
used today. Much of the his-
tory of the train depot re-
mains at the brewery as
part of the design theme.
The original ticket windows
for both passengers and
freight were preserved and
even old timecards from the
workers adorn the walls
along with photos taken
when the trains were in use.
The table tops were made
from repurposed wood that
came from the exterior of
the building, including a lo-
cal favorite design that was
once used as a special pho-
tography background, and
is now a highlight in the tast-
ing room. The bar was cus-
tom made with luggage that
was donated and had at
one time passed through the
train station!
Every design aspect of
Battle Street Brewery was
planned in detail and adds
to the character of this warm
and inviting atmosphere. A
railroad tie is used for a
footrest under the bar, you
can hang your jacket on

railroad spikes hung as coat
hangers, and there are even
leather pouches to hold your
cell phone while you plug it
into the chargers they have
in each room! Many peo-
ple marvel at the door that
sits high in the vaulted ceil-
ing of the tasting room. The
door was sealed closed and
a screen sits in the window
of the door playing movies
that are train themed. The
outdoor deck is a great way
to sit and enjoy the warmer
months, and even into the
cooler evenings with the
gas heaters going. As win-
ter approaches, the inviting
fireplace in the tasting room
makes you feel right at
home when you visit.
There are plenty of events
and activities that happen
each week at Battle Street!
There is a game room situat-
ed in the back with board
games and cards available,
or it can be used as a meet-
ing space for a small group.
They have custom corn hole
boards and a monthly cal-
endar filled with fun things
like live music, special food
and drink days, contests,
and beer memes.
There is plenty of exciting
merchandise to purchase,
such as tee-shirts, tank tops,
hats, and hoodies. If you’re
looking for a growler, they
have a few different styles
and sizes to fill with your fa-
vorite craft beverage. They
continue to expand as the
buzz from the local area is
really starting to spread to
other towns and counties,
and even people from other
states and countries have
visited the brewery.
The family that owns the
brewery is from Dansville
and still have strong ties to
the community. Brothers
Doug and Tom Acomb pur-
chased the building and be-
gan renovation in 2015.

When Dansville Officer
Jeff Faugh, Badge 402,
went 10-7 (out of service) at
2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14,
it was more than the end of
a shift. After 26 and one
half years, he was calling it
the end of a career.
Faugh joined the Dansville
Police Department on Feb.
9, 1992. Mike Kane was
mayor and Marc Vernam
the chief of police. Faugh
described Dansville then as
a “hectic, wild west”
community, and while some
things have changed, it is
still “a busy little city.”
Faugh explained that a lot
of people think of the village
as Mayberry, the slow-
pace, sleepy little North
Carolina community of
Andy and Barney television
fame, but like cities, the
village has a lot of people
down on their luck, and
some of them make bad
choices.
When asked about what
incidents he covered stick
out the most in his mind,
Faugh recalled two airplane
accidents and one fatal fire.
One airplane crash was on
East Hill and the other in
Village Plaza. The former
accident involved a fatality.
The fire was on Depot Road.
As for the positive, Faugh
noted that the men and
women he shared duties
with impressed him for their
involvement in the
community.
“That is the one thing that
sticks out,” he commented.
What comes next for
Faugh? Well, he is already
doing it. He will continue to
work part-time for the
Livingston County Sheriff’s
Office. He is active with the
East Avon fire company, as
well. On top of that, he is a
partner with another retired

up in Rush, attended Rush-

generation public servant.
His family, including his
grandfather, father and an

“He did a good job for us
and will be taking a vast
amount of organizational
knowledge with him,”
commented Mayor Peter
Vogt during the retirement
luncheon held for the officer

be missed. I wish him all the
best.”

last time as a Dansville
police office, Officer Faugh
thanked all those who
helped him, adding, “Be

Who Are the Rotarians?
Most people are aware
that an organization called
Rotary exists in Dansville.
Signs at the gateways to the
community announce it, as
do advertisements and
articles in a variety of local
media. If you are walking
down Main St. at noon on
Tuesdays, you might even
see blue flag with the Rotary
emblem flying in front of
one of the eateries. But how
many people know anything
about the organization and
what we do?
Rotary International was
founded in 1905 by a
Chicago lawyer, Paul
Harris. The original purpose
was to create a club of
professional and business
men for friendship and
fellowship, but that soon
developed into something
broader. Today, Rotary is an
international ser vice
organization with about
1.2 million members, both
women and men, in more
than 35,000 clubs spread
across nearly 200 nations.
The broader purpose is to
bring together business and
professional leaders in
order to provide
humanitarian ser vices,
encourage high ethical
standards in all vocations,
and to advance goodwill
and peace worldwide. The

The Rotary Club of
Dansville was chartered in
1924 and has a vocations, including, but not
distinguished record of
service at home and
abroad. One of its earliest
local projects was the
establishment of Rotary
Field at what is now
Babcock Park. Many of us
still remember the large
covered grandstand and
the adult and semi-
professional baseball
games played on the field. I
lived on Van Campen St.
and the glow of the lights
drew us youngsters to the
games much as a flame
attracts moths. Great
memories! However, the
club is more than memories.
It remains strong community
contributor to this day.
Our club started its 2018-

Emphasis is placed on
being present at meetings,
taking part in programs,
serving on committees and
as an officer, paying dues
and representing the club in
outside activities. It is also
about attending district and
local trainings.
Vocational Service calls
on every Rotarian to work
with integrity and contribute
their expertise to the
problems and needs of
society. The concept of
vocational service is rooted
in high ethical standards in
business and professions,
the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful
occupations, and the
dignifying of each
Rotarian’s occupation as an
opportunity to serve society.
Many of our members are
or have been members of
the local hospital and school
boards, boards of trustees
for institutions of higher
learning, state boards,
festival committees, the
Chamber of Commerce,
and as elected officials.
Community Ser vice
encourages every Rotarian
to find ways to improve the
quality of life for people in
their communities and to
serve the public interest. As
a club, this has been
expressed by constructing a
pavilion at a local athletic
park, picking up roadside
trash during the spring and
fall highway cleanup
campaigns, reading to
primary school students,
contributing funds to the
local sports booster club,
participating in local
festivals (Dogwood and
Winter in the Village) and
providing substantial
donations to Noyes
Memorial Hospital. The club
has also provided financial
support to Habitat for
Humanity, Vincent House
(comfort care), downtown
holiday street lighting and
EARS Lifeline.
That is not all. During the

books. There is no
paperwork or such.
The shaking and moving
did not stop with the Little
Libraries. Working with
Dansville Central School
District, Rotarians helped
purchase, set up and
distribute free school
supplies to students. More
than 150 families benefited
from the giveaway. Our
club will continue its
partnership with the school
district throughout the year
by stocking its student
backpack program with
free food for weekend use.
As fall sets in, the club will
look toward the holidays as
an opportunity to help the
less fortunate in the
community. Again this
Thanksgiving, the Rotary
Club of Dansville will offer a
free turkey dinner with all
the fixin’s to anyone who
asks. Signup forms will be
available throughout the

Where Art Happens in Dansville
Dansville ArtWorks Inc., a nonprofit arts organi-
zation, recently began its fourth year on Main
Street in downtown Dansville! With a community
arts center and gift shop located at 153 Main
Street, Dansville ArtWorks hosts art exhibits and
performing arts events and features consigned
original local artwork and books, serving on av-
erage 30 artists and authors at any given time.
Discover Dansville
Art workshops for adults and children are also
offered. Three successful community arts pro-
grams are managed by ArtWorks: Chalk Walk
& ArtsFest, Fairy Doors of Dansville, and the
Fourth Friday Open Mic Performing Arts Series.
Dansville ArtWorks’ mission is to cultivate and
enhance the visual, literary, and performing arts
opportunities in the greater Dansville community.

Ambulance Celebrates 50 Years

The Dansville Ambulance
Company is celebrating 50
years of service to the com-
munity.
Started by about 60 mem-
bers of the Dansville Fire De-
partment, the service at that
time was being run by the
Dansville Police Depart-
ment, through the Dansville
Health Department. during
the he 1940s and 1950s,
the ambulance was run by
local funeral directors.
The Dansville Lions Club
was instrumental in direct-
ing door-to-door fund drives
to help purchase several
ambulances over a number
of years.
The current Dansville Am-
bulance Company is no lon-
ger part of the Dansville Fire
Department, but several
members belong to both or-
ganizations.
Residing at 18 Ossian St.,
our base consist of three
truck bays, housing two BLS
(basic life support) ambu-
lances, a certified BLS sup-
port vehicle( pickup truck), a
John Deere Gator, equipped
with rescue equipment and
lighting for nighttime opera-
tions, for off-road/wilder-
ness rescue, and a 28-foot
trailer for Mass Gatherings/

The Foundation for Dansville
Education was the
brainchild of former
Dansville resident, Dan
Barwick. With a small
group of supporters, he
started the framework for a
volunteer group to secure
funds and support academic
opportunities for Dansville’s
youth, with a special
emphasis on those areas
susceptible to cuts or not
mandated by the state (i.e.

enrichment, etc.) The

for profit” status in
September 2014, a major
goal of the organization

robotics is very popular and
students love it!
Vex Robotics: High
School students design
robots and compete with
teams across the entire
state. This platform offers
students the opportunity to

Therapy dogs: Therapy
Dogs are more visible at
Dansville. After going
through training, some
teachers are bringing their
Therapy Dogs in training to
school. A great tool for
helping students with
anxiety and are also great
listeners to a student
learning to read! These
dogs can change the whole
feel of a room by their
presence.
Backpack Program:
Families can participate in
our Backpack Program
which provides food to help
with weekend and vacation
nutrition.

Away: Over 100 students
received school supplies for
the second summer.
