Helping High School Students Begin a Prosperous Collegiate Journey: The Pearl

& Ivy Educational Foundation and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Host 6th
Annual College Fair

Washington, DC, October 12, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The Pearl and Ivy Educational Foundation (PIEF), in
partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Xi Omega Chapter will hold its 6th Annual
College Fair on Saturday, October 13 at Paul Public Charter School. The college fair will take place from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

High school students, parents, caregivers and educators are encouraged to attend. Registration
information is available at xo2018collegefair.eventbrite.com. Workshops will address strategies on being
successful in college, applying for financial aid and scholarships, identifying a major and securing
internships.

“We are excited to host this event for the sixth year and provide students and parents with information on
how to be successful in college. For many families, transitioning to college can be overwhelming,” said
April Gaines-Jernigan, Xi Omega and PIEF President. “This is our way of assisting families - by
identifying local colleges, universities and non-traditional schools to bring their expertise to students
about everything from scholarships and career opportunities, to how to secure internships and financial
aid.”

According to a Pew Research Study, “A college degree is beneficial for not just higher earnings, but
upward mobility and self-esteem. Also, those without a college degree can find their upward mobility
limited by a lack of educational credentials.” In 2016, the most recent year for which statistics are
available, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 58.2 percent of African American students enrolled
in college.

“I am proud to continue the legacy of our Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority founders by promoting
educational opportunities,” said Leslie W. Jones, College Fair chairman. “Our current targets include
promoting historically Black colleges and universities, assisting students in their pursuit of a college
education and providing guidance while they complete the admissions process. This fair is one way that
Xi Omega Chapter is reaching that goal.”
