Introduction

The need for an open-ended laboratory activity is emphasized in enhancing

independent learning activities and inculcating creativity and innovation of
students. It is now a required element in an accreditation exercise as
stipulated in the EAC Manual 2012.

This open-ended laboratory activities is created to provide a platform for

students (as a group of five) to determine the objectives and scope of the
field assignment, identify the necessary apparatus and prepare the step by
step methodology to carry out the task to address the given problem. The
group will be required to analyse all the technical data obtained and present
PREAMBLE them in a technical report format.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the field activities, students would be able to:

1. Determine the suitable the field study to be conducted to address the
given problem
2. Work in a group to produce the relevant technical report.
3. Analyse test data and present the solution to the open-ended problem.

Theoretical Background

High traffic volume can affect the operation of intersection. Intersection has
significant influence for interrupted flow. Gap analysis is used to measure
the LOS of an unsignalized intersection. An efficient intersection shall
operate at least at Level of Service D. In addition to Level of Service, the
safety aspect of an intersection must also be considered to avoid accident.

Traffic can operate smoothly when the rate of flow is less than at capacity,
but excessive delay and congestion can occur when the rate of flow is at or
near capacity. In planning and design of highway facilities, the principal
purpose is to design or plan facilities that will operate at flow rates below
their optimum rates. However, this objective can be achieved only if a good
estimate of the optimum flow of a facility can be made.
Inefficient junction operations can cause severe traffic congestion, thus
affecting the surrounding environment. There are several factors that need

to be considered including the safety of road users and adequacy of road

infrastructure. Long-standing traffic woes received very little attention
despite the huge investment that has been spent in developing and
enhancing expertise in traffic and transportation engineering.
In this road traffic study, three (3) problems need to be tackled in order to
solve traffic congestion, safety and related environmental issues such as:
1. Ensure the safety issues for road user
2. Evaluate the junction performance
3. Use an appropriate software to verify the field works result

Each group will be asked to identify a study area with six (6) movement
pattern. The group is required to design and conduct suitable and related

field study to obtain the relevant traffic parameters to address the three (3)
related problems mentioned above. The field study to be designed will be
conducted in succession for five (5) consecutive weeks.

The group will be required to prepare the technical report of the field study
RESULTS highlighting the procedures adopted, data acquisition process/analysis
carried out and the relevancy of the parameters obtained to address the
problem given.
