Sabbath School Lesson

QUARTERLY

Senior Division, Fourth Quarter, 1973

Foreword
The message of the second angel brings to attention the judgment of the
world and of its inhabitants. At the close of the probationary time, before
any who had been contaminated with sin can be permitted to freely fellow-
ship with the heavenly family, all must pass the most rigorous inspection.
Not one trace of the contamination of sin will be tolerated. Sin will not be
able to rise the second time, so every vestige and seed of it must be sepa-
rated entirely during this life.
Some have felt that to preach the perfection required of the one hun-
dred forty-four thousand - who will be found faultless in the final investi-
gation - is discouraging. This is true if it is so presented, but it is the plan
of God that men should know His power to save to the utmost and cleanse
from all defilement. Jesus wants us to realize that we can be saved from
all sin - so that it does not reign over us in any way.
Satan has always denied the power of God and said that the standard is
too high, that the law is too hard, and that it is impossible to be kept by
man, The Lord wants to seperate for Himself, from the last and most cor-
rupt generation, a perfect people, men and women who "keep His com-
mandments." One hundred forty-four thousand living witnesses to prove to
the whole universe that Satan is a liar and deceiver.
We often forget that although the Lord is the judge, He Himself is on
trial before the whole universe to see how He handles this thing - sin. Can
He maintain His righteousness, His law, and yet save man?
Some, having in mind to make "allowances for the frailties of the flesh,"
have invented different interpretations of the one hundred forty-four thou-
sand, but the words of Christ would surely apply to all such, "Ye do err,
not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God" (Mt 22:29). God has
the power to separate His people from the things of the world, so that they
being in the world are still not of the world. God has power to purify a
church, without spot or blemish, a church in which His power is so mani-
fest that it will be united with Him like an army with banners, before whom
Satan and his agents cannot stand.
The qualification and prerequisite for membership in this select company
is absolute separation from sin. The work of the third angel is to seal those
who have come to Christ and have learned how to walk in His righteous-
ness. The mighty angel of Revelation 18 has come with power and light
to assist in the finishing of this work. While there is yet time, the church
and every member is called to separate from sin and compromise, so that
they, in turn, may be made channels through whom the last warning
may be given to any honest soul yet in the world but desiring to escape
from the power of sin. May God help every member hear the call and re-
spond to the leading of the Spirit of the Lord and His holy angels.

THE LORD SEPARATES EVIL FROM GOOD

KEY TEXT: "The soul of the wicked desireth evil; His neighbour findeth no
favour in his eyes" (Prov 21:10).
A. Divine Decree to Separate
1. When and where was the first separation, and what came as the re-
sult? Rev. 12:7-10.

NOTE: "Satan's rebellion was to be a lesson to the universe through all

coming ages - a perpetual testimony to the nature of sin and its terrible
results. The working out of Satan's rule, its effects upon both men and an-
gels, would show what must be the fruit of setting aside the divine author-
ity. It would testify that with the existence of God's government is bound
up the well-being of all the creatures He has made. Thus the history of this
terrible experiment of rebellion was to be a perpetual safeguard to all holy
beings, to prevent them from being deceived as to the nature of transgres-
sion, to save them from committing sin, and suffering its penalty." -PP
42,43.
2. With the entry of sin into the world, what painful separation became
necessary? Cen 3:23, 24.

NOTE: "Then (in tempting Adam and Eve in Eden) Satan triumphed. He
had made others suffer by his fall. He had been shut out of heaven, they
(Adam and Eve) out of Paradise." -EW 149.
3. When open sin was manifest in the family of Adam, what further
separation became necessary, and what is said of Cain? Cen 4:14, 16.

NOTE: "In sparing the life of the first murderer, God presented before the
whole universe a lesson bearing upon the great controversy. The dark his-
tory of Cain and his descendants was an illustration of what would have
been the result of permitting the sinner to live on forever, to carry out his
rebellion against God. The -forebearance of God only rendered the wicked
more bold and defiant in their iniquity... ." -PP 78.
4. Who made the separation in the time of Noah? Cen 6:13; 7:4, 16;
8:15-17.

NOTE: "... When the reasoning of philosophy has banished the fear of
God's judgments; when religious teachers are pointing forward to long ages
of peace and prosperity, and the world are absorbed in their rounds of busi-
ness and pleasure, planting and building, feasting and merrymaking, reject-
ing God's warnings and mocking His messengers - then it is that sudden
-3-
destruction cometh upon them, and they shall not escape. 1 Thessalonians
5:3." -PP 104.
B. God's People to be a Separate People
5. What was the effect of the call of God to Abraham? Gen 12:1.

NOTE: "... In order that God might qualify him for his great work as the
keeper of the sacred oracles, Abraham must be separated from the associa-
tions of his early life. The influence of kindred and friends would interfere
with the training which the Lord purposed to give His servant. Now that
Abraham was, in a special sense, connected with heaven, he must dwell
among strangers. His character must be peculiar, differing from all the
world...." -PP 126.
6. When Israel became a great nation, what did the Lord see was neces-
sary for them? Gen 46:3, 4; Ex 3:7, 8; 20:1, 2.

NOTE: "The elders of Israel endeavored to sustain the sinking faith of their
brethren by repeating the promises made to their fathers, and the prophetic
·words of Joseph before his death, fortelling their deliverance from Egypt.
Some would listen and believe. Others, looking at the circumstances that
surrounded them, refused to hope. The Egyptians, being informed of what
was reported among their bondmen, derided their expectations and scorn-
fully denied the power of their God...." -PP 259.
7. What lessons did the Lord try to teach the people in the time of the
judges? Jgs 2:15,16.

NOTE: "... There was ever a remnant who were true to Jehovah; and from
time to time the Lord raised up faithful and valiant men to put down idol-
atry and to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. But when the deliverer
was dead, and the people were released from his authority, they would
gradually return to their idols. And thus the story of backsliding and chas-
tisement, of confession and deliverance, was repeated again and again."
-PP 545.
8. What salutary lesson was learned and never forgotten from the ex-
perience of the Jews in the seventy years of captivity in Babylon? Eze
20:37, 38; Neh 13:17, 18.

NOTE: "By the Babylonish captivity the Israelites were effectually cured of
the worship of graven images. During the centuries t:hat followed, they suf-
fered from the oppression of heathen foes, until the conviction became
fixed that their prosperity depended upon their obedience to the law of
God. But with too many of the people obedience was not prompted by
love. The motive was selfish. They rendered outward service to God as the
means of attaining to national greatness...." -DA 28, 29.
C. Exclusiveness of Jews Defeats the Purpose of God
-4-
9. Although the Jews did not forget the Sabbath, what extremes were
introduced through them by Satan to defeat the purposes of God in
making them a separate people? Mt 12:2; Lk 6:6-11; Mk 2:27, 28.

NOTE: "The Jews had so perverted the law that they made it a yoke of
bondage. Their meaningless requirements had become a byword among oth-
er nations. Especially was the Sabbath hedged in by all manner of sense-
less restrictions. It was not to them a delight, the holy of the Lord, and
honorable. The scribes and Pharisees had made its observance an intoler-
able burden...." -DA 204.
10. When breaking down the walls of separation, what principle must be
preserved at all times? Lk 19:5-7; Mt 9:10-12; Jn 17:15-18,20.

NOTE: "Jesus had begun to break down the partition wall between Jew
and Gentile, and to preach salvation to the world. Though He was a Jew,
He mingled freely with the Samaritans, setting at nought the Pharisaic cus-
toms of His nation. In face of their prejudices He accepted the hospitality
of this despised people. He slept under their roofs, ate with them at their
tables, - partaking of the food prepared and served by their hands, -
taught in their streets, and treated them with the utmost kindness and cour-
tesy." -DA 193.
"The gospel invitation is not to be narrowed down, and presented only
to a select few, who, we suppose, will do us honor if they accept it. The
message is to be given to all. Wherever hearts are open to receive the truth,
Christ is ready to instruct them...." -Ibid., p. 194.

Lesson No.2 Sabbath, October 13, 1973

CHRIST ESTABLISHES A SEPARATE CHURCH

KEY TEXT: "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the
Son of the living God. And I (Jesus) say also unto thee, That
thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and
the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Mt 16:16, 18).
A. The Church Continued from Old Testament Times
1. Where was the church of God first organized, and who was its leader?
Acts 7:38.

2. During His earthly ministry, what was the first step taken by Jesus in
the organization of the church on earth to continue the work after His
departure? Lk 6:13-16.

NOTE: "The first step was now to be taken in the organization of the
church that after Christ's departure was to be His representative on earth.
-5-
No costly sanctuary was at their command, but the Saviour led His disciples
to the retreat He loved, and in their minds the sacred experiences of that
day were forever linked with the beauty of mountain and vale and sea.

"Jesus had called His disciples that He might send them forth as His wit-
nesses, to declare to the world what they had seen and heard of Him. Their
office was the most important to which human beings had ever been called,
and was second only to that of Christ Himself. They were to be workers
together with God for the saving of the world. As in the Old Testament the
twelve patriarchs stand as representatives of Israel, so the twelve apostles
were to stand as representatives of the gospel church." -DA 291.
3. What consultation did Jesus have before taking this important step?
Lk 6:12.

NOTE: "... Alone upon a mountain near the Sea of Galilee He spent tlle
entire night in prayer for them, while they were sleeping at the foot of the
mountain. With the first light of dawn He summoned them to meet Him;
for He had something of importance to communicate to them." -DA 292.

B. The Bond of Unity between Church Members

4. What did Christ say would distinguish those eligible from those who
were disqualified for true membership in His kingdom? Jn 7:17; 8:39.

NOTE: "The Pharisees had declared themselves the children of Abraham.

Jesus told them that this claim could be established only by doing the
works of Abraham. The true children of Abraham would live, as he did, a
life of obedience to God. They would not try to kill One who was speaking
the truth that was given Him from God. In plotting against Christ, the rab-
bis were not doing the works of Abraham. A mere lineal descent from Abra-
ham was of no value. Without a spiritual connection with him, which would
be manifested in possessing the same spirit, and doing the same works, they
were not his children." -DA 466, 467.

5. After the company of workers had been increased to include seventy

evangelists, what truth brought a distinct separation? Jn 6:48, 51, 60,
63,66.

6. What basic truth was recognized by Peter as spokesman for the dis-
ciples? Mt 16:16, 19.

NOTE: "... The church is built upon Christ as its foundation; it is to obey
Christ as its head. It is not to depend upon man, or to be controlled by man.
Many claim that a position of trust in the church gives them authority to
dictate what other men shall believe and what they shall do. This claim
God does not sanction. The Saviour declares, "All ye are brethren.' All are
exposed to temptation, and are liable to error. Upon no finite being can we
depend for guidance. The Rock of faith is the living presence of Christ in
-6-
the church. Upon this the weakest may depend, and those who think them-
selves the strongest will prove to be the weakest, unless they make Christ
their efficiency...." -DA 414.
7. What was the test of discipleship applied by Jesus after the resurrec-
tion? Jn 21:15-17.

NOTE: "Three times Peter had openly denied his Lord, and three times
Jesus drew from him the assurance of his love and loyalty, pressing home
that pointed question, like a barbed arrow to his wounded heart. Before the
assembled disciples Jesus revealed the depth of Peter's repentance, and
showed how thoroughly humbled was the once boasting disciple." -DA 812.
C. Love is not License
8. What proof is there that love does not preclude the discipline of the
church? How was the authority of the church confinned by the teach-
ing of the apostles? 1 Cor 14:40; 7:17; Mt 16:19; 18:17, 18; Tit 1:5.

NOTE: "There have ever been in the church those who are constantly in-
clined toward individual independence. They seem unable to realize that
independence of spirit is liable to lead the human agent to have too much
confidence in himself and to trust in his own judgment rather than to re-
spect the counsel and highly esteem the judgment of his brethren, especially
of those in the offices that God has appointed for the leadership of His peo-
ple. God has invested His church with special authority and power which
no one can be justified in disregarding and despising, for he who does this
despises the voice of God." -AA 163, 164.
9. What charge is brought against the leaders of one of the symbolic
churches by the divine Watcher? Rev 2:14, 20.

NOTE: "Satan is well aware that the weakest soul who abides in Christ is
more than a match for the hosts of darkness, and that, should he reveal him-
self openly, he would be met and resisted. Therefore he seeks to draw away
the soilders of the cross from their strong fortification, while he lies in am-
bush with his forces, ready to destroy all who venture upon his ground.
Only in humble reliance upon God, and obedience to all His command-
ments, can we be secure." -GC 530.
10. What divine instruction was given for those from whom much of the
essential truths had been obscured? Rev 2:25; 3:2.

NOTE: "... Looking down through long centuries of darkness and super-
stition, the aged exile (John) saw multitudes suffering martyrdom because
of their love for the truth. But he saw also that He who sustained His early
witnesses would not forsake His faithful followers during the centuries of
persecution that they must pass through before the close of time... ." -AA
588.

Lesson No.3 Sabbath, October 20, 1973

CHRIST AND THE ORGANIZED CHURCH

KEY TEXT: "But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and
all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of
God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other
undone" (Lk 11:42).

A. The Constituted Authority in Christ's Day

1. Whereby do we know that Christ recognized the authority of the es-

tablished church of His day? Mt 8:4; Lk 5:14.

NOTE: "... While Jesus ministered to all who came unto Him, He yearned
to bless those who came not. While He drew the publicans, the heathen, and
the Samaritans, He longed to reach the priests and teachers who were shut
in by prejudice and tradition. He left untried no means by which they might
be reached. In sending the healed leper to the priests, He gave them a
testimony calculated to disarm their prejudices." -DA 265.

2. How did Jesus comply with the church requirements based on the
word of God, and take part in the local services? Jn 2:13; 5:1; Lk 4:16.

NOTE: "During His childhood and youth, Jesus had worshiped among His
brethren in the synagogue at Nazareth. Since the opening of His ministry
He had been absent from them, but they had not been ignorant of what had
befallen Him. As He again appeared among them, their interest and expec-
tation were excited to the highest pitch...." -DA 236.

"When a rabbi was present at the synagogue, he was expected to deliver

the sermon, and any Israelite might give the reading from the prophets.
Upon this Sabbath Jesus was requested to take part in the service...."
-Ibid. .
3. How did Jesus relate to the human ordinances enacted by the church?
Lk 11:38, 39.

NOTE: "As before, the ground of complaint was His disregard of the tradi-
tional precepts that encumbered the law of God." -DA 395.

"Christ and His disciples did not observe these ceremonial washings, and
the spies made this neglect the ground of their accusation." -Ibid., p. 396.

B. Divine Principles Explained

4. What basic instruction is given to guide the sincere child of God when
the truth is mixed with hypocrisy? Lk 11:42.

"':"8-
NOTE: "All that God commands is of consequence. Christ recognized the
payment of tithes as a duty; but He showed that this could not excuse the
neglect of other duties." -DA 617.
5. What experience gave Christ opportunity to show His special relation-
ship to the official church? Mt 17:24-27.

NOTE: "Peter saw in the collector's question an insinuation touching

Christ's loyalty to the temple. Zealous for his Master's honor, he hastily an-
swered, without consulting Him, that Jesus would pay the tribute." -DA
433.
"If Jesus had paid the tribute without a protest, He would virtually have
acknowledged the justice of the claim, and would thus have denied His di-
vinity. But while He saw good-,to meet the demand, He denied the claim
upon which it was based. In providing for the payment of the tribute He
gave evidence of His divine character. It was made manifest that He was
one with God, and therefore was not under tribute as a mere subject of the
kingdom." -Ibid., p. 434.
C. Public Efforts to Make Reform
6. What experiences at the beginning and end of His ministry prove His
continuing disapproval of the commercialism and exploitation of the
members, even in the name of the work of God? In 2:14-17.

NOTE: "At the beginning of His ministry, Christ had driven from the tem-
ple those who defiled it by their unholy traffic; and His stern and godlike
demeanor had struck terror to the hearts of the scheming traders. At the
close of His mission He came again to the temple, and found it still dese-
crated as before. The condition of things was even worse than before...."
-DA 589.
"His (Christ's) voice sounded like a trumpet through the temple. The
displeasure of His countenance seemed like consuming fire. With authority
He commanded, 'Take these things hence.' John 2:16." -Ibid., p. 591.
7. How can we know that this truth still applies in our day? 1 Cor 10:11,
12.

NOTE: "By many illustrations and repeated warnings, Jesus showed what
would be the result to the Jews of rejecting the Son of God. In these words
He was addressing all in every age who refuse to receive Him as their Re-
deemer. Every warning is for them. The desecrated temple, the disobedient
son, the false husbandmen, the contemptuous builders, have their counter-
part in the experience of every sinner. Unless he repents, the doom which
they foreshadowed will be his." -DA 600.
8. What danger always confronts those who are called to be leaders a-
mong God's people? Eze 33:6; Lk 11:51, 52; Mt 18:1-4; Lk ~:49, 50.

-9-
NOTE "•.. There has been a spirit of self-sufficiency and a disposition to
strive for position and supremacy. I have seen that self-glorification was
becoming common among Seventh-day Adventists and that unless the pride
of man should be abased and Christ exalted we should, as a people, be in
no better condition to receive Christ at His second advent than were the
Jewish people to receive Him at His first advent." -5T 727, 728.

D. Supreme Love for the Truth

9. As One who loved the church of His fathers, what was Jesus' reaction
to the spiritual blindness of leaders and people? Mt 23:37-39.

NOTE: "Divine pity marked the countenance of the Son of God as He cast
one lingering look upon the temple and then upon His hearers. In a voice
choked by deep anguish of heart and bitter tears He exclaimed, '0 Jerusa-
lem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are
sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together,
even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would notl'
This is the separation struggle. In the lamentation of Christ the very heart
of God is pouring itself forth. It is the mysterious farewell of the long-
suffering love of the Deity." -DA 620.

10. What indicates that Jesus had organized His followers independently
of the Jewish church authorities? Jn 13:14, 15, 17; Lk 22:19, 20. .

I NOTE: "The ordinances that point to our Lord's humiliation and suffering
are regarded too much as a form. They were instituted for a purpose. Our
senses need to be quickend to lay hold of the mystery of godliness. It is the
privelege of all to comprehend, far more than we do, the expiatory suffer-
ings of Christ. ..." -DA 660.

Lesson No.4 Sabbath, October 27, 1973

PROTEST AND SEPARATION IN THE GREAT REFORMATION

KEY TEXT: "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth" (John
17:17).
A. The Word of God Alone is the Foundation of Truth
1. Whad did Jesus say concerning the authority claimed for tradition, and
why is it objectionable? Mt. 15:6 (last part), 9, 13, 14.

NOTE: "... Taking no notice of their forms and ceremonies, He (Christ)

had encouraged sinners to go directly to God as a merciful Father, and make
known their wants. Thus, in their opinion, He had set aside the priesthood.
He had refused to acknowledge the theology of the rabbinical schools. He
-10-
had exposed the evil practices of the priests, and had irreparably hurt their
influence. He had injured the effect of their maxims and traditions, declar-
ing that though they strictly enforced the ritual law, they made void the
law of God...." -DA 540, 541.
2. What fundamental Bible truth revealed to Luther gave impetus to the
great reformation in the sixteenth century? Rom 1:17; Hab 2:4.

NOTE: " ... That text (Romans 1:17) never lost its power upon his (Lu-
ther's) soul. From that time he saw more clearly than ever before the fallacy
of trusting to human works for salvation, and the necessity of constant faith
in the merits of Christ. His eyes had been opened, and were never again to
be closed, to the delusions of the papacy. \Vhen he turned his face from
Rome he had turned away also in )leart, and from that time the separation
grew wider, until he severed all connection with the papal church." -GC
125.
3. What did Jesus say was spirit and life? Jn 6:63 (last part).

NOTE: "From the secret place of prayer came the power that shook the
world in the Great Reformation. There, with holy calmness, the servants of
the Lord set their feet upon the rock of His promises." -GC 210.
B. There is Power in the Word
4. Who was called of God and closely associated with Luther, reminiscent
of the connection between Peter and John? Ec 4:9,10.

NOTE: "I saw that Luther was ardent and zealous, fearless and bold, in
reproving sin and advocating the truth. He cared not for wicked men or
devils; he knew that he had One with him mightier than they all. Luther
possessed zeal, courage, and boldness, and at times was in danger of going
to extremes. But God raised up Melanchthon, who was just the opposite in
character, to aid Luther in carrying on the work of refonnation. Melanch-
thon was timid, fearful, cautious, and possessed great patience. He was
greatly beloved of God. His knowledge of the Scriptures was great, and his
judgment and wisdom excellent. His love for the cause of God was equal
to Luther's. The hearts of these men the Lord knit together; they were in-
separable friends. Luther was a great help to Melanchthon when in danger
of being fearful and slow, and Melanchthon in turn was a great help to
Luther when in danger of moving too fast. Melanchthon's farseeing caution
often averted trouble which.would have come upon the cause had the work
been left alone to Luther; and ofttimes the work would not have been
pushed forward had it been left to lvlelanchthon alone. I was shown the wis-
dom of God in choosing these two men to carryon the work of reformation."
-EW 224.
5. What gave great power and impetus to the reformation after the dark
ages? Ps 119:130; Is 28:13.

-11-
NOTE: "... The study of the Scriptures was working a mighty change in the
minds and hearts of the people.... The preaching of Luther, setting forth
the plain truths of God's word, and then the word itself, placed in the hands
of the common people, had aroused their dormant powers, not only purify-
ing and ennobling the spiritual nature, but imparting new strength and
vigor to the intellect." -GC 195.
6. What firmness and integrity on the part of Luther ensured victory
over the forces of darkness and ushered in a new and better era? To
whom may he be compared for his courage? Mt 11:7; Neh 6:11 (first
part).
NOTE: "Had the Reformer (Luther) yielded a single point, Satan and his
hosts would have gained the victory. But his unwavering firmness was the
means of emancipating the church, and beginning a new and better era."
-GC 166.
C. The Truth Shall Make You Free
7. What statement of the apostle Peter says that the Scriptures are open
to the understanding of all? 2 Pet 1:20.

NOTE: "We thank God that the Bible is prepared for the poor man as well
as for the learned man. It is fitted for all ages and all classes. -Manuscript
16, 1888 (written at Minneapolis, Minn., in autum of 1888)," -ISM 18.
8. What is said of those who are willing to search the word of God sin-
cerely for themselves to find the truth in order to obey it? Acts 17:11.

NOTE: "The minds of the Bereans were not narrowed by prejudice. They
were willing to investigate the truthfulness of the doctrines preached by the
apostles. They studied the Bible, not from curiosity, but in order that they
might learn what had been written concerning the promised Messiah. Daily
they searched the inspired records, and as they compared scripture with
scripture, heavenly angels were beside them, enlightening their minds and
impressing their hearts." -AA 231.
9. What gave the German princes courage to openly protest before the
highest earthly authorities? Ps 119:46; Mt 22:29.

NOTE: "Persons of all ranks were to be seen with the Bible in their hands,
defending the doctrines of the Reformation. The papists who had left the
study of the Scriptures to the priests and monks now called upon them to
come forward and refute the new teachings. But, ignorant alike of the
Scriptures and of the power of God, priests and fdars were totally defeated
by those whom they had denounced as unlearned and heretical. .. ," -GC
195.
10. What divine instruction given by Jesus resulted in the spread of the
truth at that time? Mt 10:23.

Lesson No.5 Sabbath, November 3, 1973

WHAT CONCORD HAS BELIEVER WITH UNBELIEVER?

KEY TEXT: "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for
what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and
• what communion hath light with darkness" (2 Cor 6:14)?

A. Separation from Sinners

1. What is implied in the injunction not to be unequally yoked with un-
believers? Amos 3:3; Lk 16:13.

NOTE: "... All who are loyal to God and the truth must stand firmly for
the right because it is right. To yoke up with those who are unconsecrated,
and yet be loyal to the truth, is simply impossible. We cannot unite with
those who are serving themselves, who are working on worldly plans, and
not lose our connection with the heavenly Counselor. We may recover our-
selves from the snare of the enemy, but we are bruised and wounded, and
our experience is dwarfed (RH April 19, 1898)." -5BC 1086.

2. What stand must the church take with believers who are tempted to
marry with unbelievers? 2 Cor 6:14; 1 Cor 7:39 (last part).

NOTE: "My sister, dare you disregard these plain and positive directions?
As a child of God, a subject of Christ's kingdom, the purchase of His blood,
how can you connect yourself with one who does not acknowledge His
claims, who is not controlled by His Spirit? The commands I have quoted
are not the word of man, but of God... ." -5T 364.

B. Health Reform to be a Protection

3. What was one of God's purposes in revealing the principles of health
reform to His people? How has His purpose been thwarted by modern
Israel? Deut 28:9, 13.

NOTE: "The Lord in wisdom designed to bring His people into a position
where they would be separate from the world in spirit and practice, that
their children might not so readily be led into idolatry and become tainted
with the prevailing corruptions of this age... ." -2T 399, 400.
• "Seventh-day Adventists are handling momentous truths. More than forty
years ago the Lord gave us special light on health reform, but how are we
walking in that light? How many have refused to live in harmony with the
counsel of Godl As a people, we should make advancement proportionate
to the light received. It is our duty to understand and respect the principles
of health reform. On the subject of temperance we should be in advance of
all other people; and yet there are among us well-instructed members of the
church, and even ministers of the gospel, who have little respect for the
-13-
light that God has given upon this subject. They eat as they please and
work as they please." -9T 158.
"Our habits of eating and drinking show whether we are of the world or
among the number whom the Lord by His mighty cleaver of truth has
separated from the world." -6T 372.

4. What other purpose does health refOim still have in our day as in the
time of ancient Israel? Deut 7:15.

NOTE: "The work of health reform is the Lord's means for lessening suf-
fering in our world and for purifying His church." -9T 112, 113.

C. Fashion and Pride. War and Suffering

5. What was given to the people of God that corresponds to the require-
ment in the time of Israel to have fringes and border of blue to
distinguish them from the unbelievers? Num 15:38; Deut 22:12; 1 Tim
2:9,10.

NOTE: "The children of Israel, after-they were brought out of Egypt, were
commanded to have a simple ribbon of blue in the border of their garments,
to distinguish them from the nations around them, and to signify that they
were God's peculiar people. The people of God are not now required to
have a special mark placed upon their garments. But in the New Testament
we are often referred to ancient Israel for examples. If God gave such def-
inite directions to His ancient people in regard to their dress, will not the
dress of His people in this age come under His notice? Should there not be
in their dress a distinction from that of the world? Should not the people of
God, who are His peculiar treasure, seek even in their dress to glorify God?
And should they not be examples in point of dress, and by their simple style
rebuke the pride, vanity, and extravagance of worldly, pleasure-loving pro-
fessors? God requires this of His people. Pride is rebuked in His Word
HR, Feb. 1872)." -IBC 1114.

6. What evil, prophesied by Isaiah, will come on the church and its mem-
bers if worldly fashions are tolerated? Is 3:16-24, 25.

NOTE: "The prophecy of Isaiah 3 was presented before me as applying to

these last days, and the reproofs are given to the daughters of Zion who
have thought only of appearance and display. Read verse 25: 'Thy men shall
fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.' I was shown that this scrip-
ture will be strictly fulfilled... ." -IT 270.
7. What did Jesus say about bearing literal weapons of warfare? What
did He say was available if it had been needed to fulfill the divine
plan? Mt 26:52, 53.

D. God's Way is a Way of Blessing

-14-
8. What is the purpose of the God-appointed way of education? Deut
28:1, 2, 10; 1 Pt 2:9.

9. What is God's purpose in establishing the health work? Is 43:10-12.

NOTE: "I am intensely interested in the education of medical students as

missionaries. This is the very means of introducing the truth where other-
wise it would not find an entrance.
"I can see in the Lord's providence that the medical missionary work is
to be a great entering wedge, whereby the diseased soul may be reached."
-CH 535.
"... It (the health institution) was to be founded and conducted upon
Bible principles, as the Lord's instrumentality, and it was to be in His hands
one of the most effective agencies for giving light to the world. It was God's
purpose that it should stand forth with scientific ability, with moral and
spiritual power, and as a faithful sentinel of reform in all its bearings. All
who should act a part in it were to be reformers, having respect to its prin-
ciples, and heeding the light of health reform shining upon us as a people."
-6T 223.
10. What wonderful results would have been seen if the people of God
had followed the instruction to use the simple natural methods, and
what is the consequence of resorting to the modern gods of Ekron and
their nostrums? Deut 7:15; 28:58-60.

NOTE: "There are many ways of practicing the healing art, but there is
only one way that Heaven approves. God's remedies are the simple agencies
of nature that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful
properties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity of life, and
a firm trust in God are remedies for the want of which thousands are dy-
ing... ." -5T 443.

Lesson No.6 Sabbath, November 10, 1973

THE ADVENT MOVEMENT BEGINS WITH SEPARATION

KEY TEXT: "And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen,
is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of
the wine of the wrath of her fornication" (Rev 14:8).
A. Proclamation of the Judgment Hour
1. By reasoning from Old Testament types using the year-day principle,
how many years of warning could be expected for the judgment hour
message? Lev 23:24, 27.

-15-
NOTE: "In 1833 Miller received a license to preach, from the Baptist
Church, of which he was a member. A large number of the ministers of his
denomination also approved his work, and it was with their formal sanction
that he continued his labors." -GC 332.

2. What belief gave a sense of urgency to the message that resulted in

the beginning of the Advent Movement? Rev 14:7.

NOTE: "... In common with the rest of the Christian world, Adventists
then held that the earth, or some portion of it, was the sanctuary. They
understood that the cleansing of the sanctuary was the purification of the
earth by the fires of the last great day, and that this would take place at
the second advent. Hence the conclusion that Christ would return to the
earth in 1844." -GC 409.
3. Who was given the first link in this chain of truth? Ps 119:130.

NOTE: "God sent His angel to move upon the heart of a farmer who had
not believed the Bible, to lead him to search the prophecies. Angels of God
repeatedly visited that chosen one, to guide his mind and open to his un-
derstanding prophecies which had ever been dark to God's people. The com-
mencement of the chain of truth was given to him, and he was led on to
search for link after link, until he looked with wonder and admiration upon
the Word of God. He saw there a perfect chain of truth. That Word which
he had regarded as uninspired now opened before his vision in its beauty
and glory. He saw that one portion of Scripture explains another, and when
one passage was closed to his understanding, he found in another part of the
Word that which explained it. He regarded the sacred Word of God with
joy and with the deepest respect and awe." -EW 229.
B. No Plan for Separation
4. Although William Miller did not preach or advocate a separation -
but rather opposed it - what resulted from his work and why? Lk
12:53.

NOTE: "The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking
similarity in every great reformation or religious movement. The principles
of God's dealing with men are ever the same. The important movements
of the present have their parallel in those 'of the past, and the experience of
the church in former ages has lessons of great valu!: for our own time.

"No truth is more clearly taught in the Bible than that God by His Holy
Spirit especially directs His servants on earth in the great movements for
the carrying forward of the work of salvation. Men are instruments in the
hand of God, employed by Him to accomplish His purposes of grace and
mercy. Each has his part to act; to each is granted a measure of light, a-
dapted to the necessities of his time, and sufficient to enable him to per-
form the work which God has given him to do. But no man, however hon-

-16-
ored of Heaven, has ever attained to a full understanding of the great pIan
of redemption, or even to a perfect appreciation of-the divine purpose in the
work for his own time. Men do not fully understand what God would ac-
complish by the work which He gives them to do; they do not comprehend,
in all its bearings, the message which they utter in His name." -GC 343.
H'In all my labors,' said Miller, 'I never had the desire or thought. to
establish any separate interest from that of existing denominations, or to
benefit one at the expense of another. I thought to benefit all. Supposing
that all Christians would rejoice in the prospect of Christ's coming, and
that those who could not see as I did would not love any the less those who
should embrace this doctrine, I did not conceive there would ever be any
necessity for separate meetings. My whole object was a desire to convert
souls to God, to notify the world of a coming judgment, and to induce my
fellow men to make that preparation of heart which will enable them to
meet their God in peace. The great majority of those who were converted
under my labors united with the various existing churches.' -Bliss, page
328." -Ibid.,' p. 375.
5. What message came in the summer of 1844? Who were the first to
receive .it, and who were the last? Mt 25:6.

NOTE: HNear the close of the second angel's message, I saw a great light
from heaven shining upon the people of God. The rays of this light seemed
bright as the sun. And I heard the voices of angels crying, 'Behold, the
Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!'
H... The most spiritual received this message first, and those who had
formerly led in the work were the last to receive and help swell the cry,
'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!' " -E\V 238.
6. What oppression caused the Advent believers to separate from the
churches? ~7hat spiritual condition existed in the nominal protestant
churches? Rev 3:1, 4, 5.

NOTE: H... But the beloved of God, who were oppressed, accepted the
message, 'Babylon is fallen,' and left the churches." -EW 237.

HAs his (Miller's) work tended to build up the churches, it was for a time
regarded with favor. But as ministers and religious leaders decided against
the advent doctrine and desired to suppress all agitation of the subject, they
not only opposed it from the pulpit, but denied their members the privilege
of attending preaching upon the second advent, or even of speaking of their
hope in the social meetings of the church. Thus the believers found them-
selves in a position of great trial and perplexity. They loved their churches
illnd were loath to separate from them; but as they saw the testimony of
God's word suppressed and their right to investigate the prophecies denied
they felt that loyalty to God forbade them to submit. Those who sought to
shut out the testimony of God's word they could not regard as constituting
the church of Christ, 'the pillar and ground of the truth.' Hence they felt
-17 -
themselves justified in separating from their former connection. In the sum-
mer of 1844 about fifty thousand withdrew from the churches." -GC 376.

C. The Message Separates Two Classes

7. If this movement was not the complete fulfillment of the midnight cry
prophecy, how may it be regarded? When will the "midnight cry" be
repeated? Is 60:2.

NOTE: "... Both parties (the wise and foolish virgins) were taken una-
wares; but one was prepared for the emergency, and the other was found
without preparation. So now, a sudden and unlooked-for calamity, some-
thing that brings the soul face to face with death, will show whether there
is any real faith in the promises of God. It will show whether the soul is
sustained by grace. The great final test comes at the close of human pro-
bation, when it will be too late for the sours need to be supplied." -COL
412.
8. When had the church previously passed through a similar experience
and with what result? Mt 21:9; 23:38, 39.

NOTE: "The message, 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!' was not so much
a matter of argument, though the Scripture proof was clear and conclusive.
There went with it an impelling power that moved the soul. There was no
doubt, no questioning. Upon the occasion of Christ's triumphal entry into
Jerusalem the people who were assembled from all parts of the land to keep
the feast flocked to the Mount of Olives, and as they joined the throng that
were escorting Jesus they caught the inspiration of the hour and helped to
swell the shout: 'Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord' Mat-
thew 21:9. In like manner did unbelievers who flocked to the Adventist
meetings - some from curiosity, some merely to ridicule - feel the con-
vincing power attending the message: 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!'"
-GC 402.
9. What disappointment will be experienced by those who are represent-
ed by the foolish virgins? Lk 13:26, 27.

NOTE: "The ten virgins are watching in the evening of this earth's history.
All claim to be Christians. All have a call, a name, a lamp, and all profess
to be doing God's service. All apparently wait for Christ's appearing. But
five are unready. Five will be found surprised, dismayed, outside the ban-
quet hall." -COL 412.
10. As the second angel's message did not introduce any new doctrinal
. truths, but brought power and separation, what may be expected when
this message is repeated by the fourth angel? Rev 14:8; 18:1-5.

NOTE: "Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard
voices which seemed to sound everywhere, 'Come out of her, My people,
-18-
that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
For her sins have reached unto heaven, and Goa hath remembered her
iniquities.' This message seemed to be an addition to the third message,
joining it as the midnight cry joined the second angel's message in 1844.
The glory of God rested upon the patient, waiting saints, and they fear-
lessly gave the last solemn warning, proclaiming the fall of Babylon and
calling upon God's people to come out of her that they might escape her
fearful doom." -EW 277, 278.

Lesson No.7 Sabbath, November 17, 1973

SEPARATION UNDER THE THIRD ANGEL'S MESSAGE

KEY TEXT: "... the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are
the angels" (Mt 13:39).
A. Purpose of the Third Angel's Message
1. What fearful warning is given by the third angel? Rev 14:9-12.

NOTE: "When God sends to men warnings so important that they are re-
presented as proclaimed by holy angels flying in the midst of heaven, He
requires every person endowed with reasoning powers to heed the message.
The fearful judgments denounced against the worship of the beast and his
image (Revelation 14:9-11), should lead all to a diligent study of the
prophecies to learn what the mark of the beast is, and how they are to avoid
receiving it... ." -GC 594.
2. What prophecy of the Old Testament delineates-the work of the mes-
senger bearing this warning? Eze 9:2-4.

NOTE: "(Eph. 1:13 quoted.) What is the seal of the living God, which is
placed in the foreheads of His people? It is a mark which angels, but not
human eyes, can read; for the destroying. angel must see this mark of re·
demption (Letter 126, 1898).
'The angel with the writer's ink horn is to place a mark upon the fore-
heads of all who are separated from sin and sinners, and the destroying
angel follows this angel (Letter 12, 1886)." -4BC 1161.

3. What will befall all those who do not have the seal of God? What
separation will follow? Eze 9:5-7.

NOTE: "But the general slaughter of all those who do not thus see the wide
contrast between sin and righteousness, and do not feel as those do who
stand in the counsel of God and receive the mark, is described in the order
to the five men with slaughter weapons (Eze 9:5, 6 quoted)." -3T 267.
-19-
B. A Very Special Company
4. What is also revealed concerning this separated company, and how
many are in it? Rev 7:4; 14:1.

NOTE: "The 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their fore-
heads was written, God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious star containing
Jesus' new name." -EW 15.
5. What state of perfection will be reached by those making up this com-
pany? Rev 14:4, 5.

NOTE: "Now is the time to prepare. The seal of God will never be placed
upon the forehead of an impure man or woman. It will never be placed
upon the forehead of the ambitious, world-loving man or woman. It will
never be placed upon the forehead of men or women of false tongues or
deceitful hearts. All who receive the seal must be without spot before God
- candidates for heaven... ." -5T 216.
6. What also is known of this company? Rev 14:12; 12:17.

NOTE: "In the twelfth chapter of Revelation is represented the great con-
flict between the obedient and the disobedient (Rev. 12: 17; 13: 11-17 quot-
ed), (MS 16, 1900)." -7BC 974.
"Not all in this world have taken sides with the enemy against God. Not
all have become disloyal. There are a faithful few who are true to God;
for John writes: (Rev. 14:12 quoted)." -9T 15.
C. Jesus Explains the Separation
7. What parable explains the work of separation that the Lord has sent
this angel to make? Mt 13:24-30.

NOTE: "Christ's servants are grieved as they see true and false believers
mingled in the church. They long to do something to cleanse the church ....
"Christ has plainly taught that those who persist in open sin must be
separated from the church, but He has not committed to us the work of
judging character and motive." -COL 71.
8. What explanation shows that .the separation is made under divine di-
rection and not by men? Mt 13:28, 29, 39, 41.

NOTE: "Finite man is likely to misjudge character, but God does not leave
the work of judgment and pronouncing upon character to those who are
not fitted for it. \Ve are not to say what constitutes the wheat, and what
the tares. The tiIne of the harvest will fully detemline the character of the
two classes specified under the figure of the tares and the wheat. The work
of separation is given to the angels of God, and not committed into the
hands of any man." -TM 47.
-20-
9. When did the third angel commence the sealing work? Dan 8:14.

NOTE: " 'The third angel is binding, or sealing, them in bundles for the
heavenly garner.' " -EW 89.
10. Why should the sealing work receive our utmost attention? 1 Pet 1:13.

NOTE: "I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, 'Fear-
ful is his work. Awful is his mission. He is the angel that is to select the
wheat from the tares, and seal, or bind, the wheat for the heavenly garner.
These things should engross the whole mind, the whole attention.' " -EW
118.

Lesson No.8 Sabbath, November 24, 1973

RIGHTEOUSNESS AND SEPARATION

KEY TEXT: "In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safe-
ly: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE
LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS" (Jer 23:6).

A. Righteousness as Our Robe

1. What is the belief of the Laodiceans concerning their condition, and

what does the True Witness counsel them to do about their needed
raiment? Rev 3:17, 18.

NOTE: "What greater deception can come upon human minds than a con-
fidence that they are right when they are all wrong! The message of the
True Witness finds the people of God in a sad deception, yet honest in that
deception. They know not that their condition is deplorable in the sight of
God. While those addressed are flattering themselves that they are in an
exalted spiritual condition, the message of the True Witness breaks their
security ·by the startling denunciation of their true condition of spiritual
blindness, poverty, and wretchedness. The testimony, so cutting and severe,
cannot be a mistake, for it is the True Witness who speaks, and His testi-
mony must be correct." -3T 252, 253.
2. What is represented by the King's wedding garment? Mt 22:11, 12;
Eph 5:27.

NOTE: "By the wedding garment in the parable is represented .the pure,
spotless character which Christ's true followers will possess. To the church
it is given 'that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white,' 'not
having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.' Rev. 19:8. The fine linen, says
the Scripture, 'is the righteousness of saints.' Eph. 5:27. It is the righteous-

-21-
ness of Christ, His own unblemished character; that through faith is im-
parted to all who receive Him as their personal Saviour." -COL 310.

3. How does heaven regard self-righteousness? Is 64:6; Php 3:9.

NOTE: "... Turn your attention to your own defects. Your self-righteous-
ness is nauseating to the Lord Jesus Christ.. (Rev. 3:15-18 quoted.) These
words apply to the churches and to many of those in positions of trust in
the work of God (MS 108, 1899)." -7BC 963.
B. God Does Not See as Man Sees
4. How does God consider those who trust in their church relationship
and missionary activity to entitle them to a place in the kingdom of
heaven? Mt 7:22, 23.

5. How much does it cost to buy the necessary raiment, and what para-
dox is there in this? Is 55:1, 2; Mt 13:44, 46.

NOTE: "When the king came in to view the guests, the. real character of
all was revealed. For every guest at the feast there had ·been provided a
wedding garment. This garment was a gift from the king. By wearing it the
guests showed their respect for the giver of the feast...." -COL 309.
6. What is the true condition of all self-righteous believers who .rely on
their membership in the church that professes the truth? And what is
the certain result? Mt 22: 12, 13.

NOTE: "... But one man was clothed in his common citizen dress. He had
refused to make the preparation required by the king. The garment provided
for him at great cost he disdained to wear. Thus he insulted his lord. To
the king's demand, 'How camest thou in hither not having a wedding gar-
ment?' he could answer nothing. He was self-condemned. Then the king
said, 'Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer
darkness.' " -COL 309.
C. Righteousness Must be a Practical Experience in This Life
7. What teaching of Jesus makes it unmistakable that the believer must
be an overcomer in this life before probation closes for him? Mt 5:48.

NOTE: "Our Saviour took up the true relationship of a human being as

the Son of God. We are sons and daughters of God. In order to know how
to behave ourselves circumspectly, we must follow where Christ leads the
way. For thirty years He lived the life of a perfect man, meeting the high-
est standard of perfection (Letter 69, 1897)." -5BC 1085, 1086.

8. How can Christ's righteousness become our righteousness? Jer 23:6;

Rom 8:3, 4.

-22-
NOTE: "... As the vine branch constantly draws the sap from the living
vine, so are we to cling to Jesus, and receive from Him by faith the strength
and perfection of His own character.

"The root sends its nourishment through the branch to the outermost
twig. So Christ communicates the current of spiritual strength to every be-
liever. So long as the soul is united to Christ, there is no danger that it will
wither or decay." -DA 676.

9. What message contains the fullest revelation of the divine plan for the
preparing of a righteous people to be living on earth when Christ shall
come? Rev 14:1-5, 9-13.

NOTE: "Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of jusitfica-

tion by faith is the third angel's message, and I have answered, 'It is the
third angel's message in verity.' " -Review and Herald, April 1, 1890.

10. Who alone can communicate life and vitality to the individual believer
and to his spiritual experience as well as to the work of God in the
church? Jn 1:12, 13; Rom 8:14-17.

NOTE: "There is too much formality in the church. Souls are perishing for
light and knowledge. We should be so connected with the Source of light
that we can be channels of light to the world.... Those who profess to be
guided by the word of God, may be familiar with the evidences of their
faith, and yet be like the pretentious fig tree, which flaunted its foliage in
the face of the world, but when searched by the Master, was found desti-
tute of fruit." -Review and Herald, Feb. 15, 1887.

Lesson No.9 Sabbath, December 1, 1973

SCRIPTURES THAT TEACH THE NEED OF SEPARATION

KEY TEXT: "Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you,
Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be
five in one house divided, three against two, and two against
three" (Lk 12:51, 52).

A. In the Parables of Jesus

1. In the story of the ten virgins, what had happened with the foolish
ones by the time that the bridegroom actually came? Mt 25:10.

NOTE: "While they (the foolish virgins) went to buy, the procession
moved on, and left them behind. The five with lighted lamps joined the

-23-
throng and entered the house with the bridal train, and the door was shut."
-COL 406.
2. What did both servants and their master see was necessary in the
field with the tares, but when did he say this would be done? Mt 13:27,
28, 30, 40-42.

3. What separation had to come in the home and experience of the man
who found the pearl of great price and also with the man who found
the treasure in the field? Mt 13:44-46.

NOTE: "A man hires land to cultivate, and as the oxen plow the soil, bur-
ied treasure is unearthed. As the man discovers this treasure, he sees that
a fortune is within his reach. Restoring the gold to its hiding place, he re-
turns to his home and sells all that he has, in order to purchase the field
containing the treasure. His family and his neighbors think that he is act-
ing like a madman. Looking on the field, they see no value in the neglected
soil. But the man knows what he is doing; and when he has a title to the
field, he searches every part of it to find the treasure that he has secured.
"This parable illustrates the value of the heavenly treasure, and the ef-
fort that should be made to secure it." -COL 103, 104.
B. In the Prophecies
4. What lesson may be learned from the fact that the Laodicean church
is spued out, and that the True Witness turns to the individuals who
will respond? Rev 3:16, 20.

NOTE: "Much excellent labor was bestowed upon the Laodicean church.
To them was given the exhortation, 'Be ye therefore perfect, even as your
Father which is in heaven is perfect.' But the church did not follow up the
work begun by God's messengers. They heard, but they failed to appropri-
ate the truth to themselves, and to carry out the instruction given them.
The result that followed is the result always sure to follow the rejection of
the Lord's warnings and entreaties (MS 128, 1903)." -7BC 964.
5. What was the result of preaching the second angel's message, espe-
cially in connection with the midnight cry of Matthew 25:5? Rev 14:8.

NOTE: "In many churches the message· was not permitted to be given, and
a large company who had the living testimony left these fallen churches."
-EW 238.
6. What will again take place as the second angel's message is repeated
by the angel of Revelation 18? Rev 18:1-3.

NOTE: "When Jesus began His public ministry, He cleansed the temple
from its sacrilegious profanation. Among the last acts of His ministry was
the second cleansing of the temple. So in the last work for the warning of
-24-
the world, two distinct calls are made to the churches. The second angel's
message is,'Babylon is "fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all
nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.' And in the loud
cry of the third angel's message a voice is heard from heaven saying, 'Come
out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye
receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God
hath remembered her iniquities' (RH Dec. 6, 1892)." -7BC 985.
"
7. What call will join the third angers message in the same way as the
midnight cry joined the second angers message, and what power will
• attend the finishing of the work? Rev 18:4.

NOTE: "Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard
voices which seemed to sound everywhere, 'Come out of her, My people,
that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniq-
uities.' This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, joining
it as the midnight cry joined the second angers message in 1844... ." -EW
277.
8. What separation and distinction is taught in the experience revealed
in Revelation 12:17, and how many classes of people are identified?

NOTE: "We are plainly shown that two parties will exist at the appearing
of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In which party do we wish to be
found?" -TM 133.
C. In Principle
9. What impossibility is clearly taught in the Scriptures concerning the
prince of this world and Christ? 2 Cor 6:15.

10. What instruction is made very plain by the apostle Paul to the Corin-
thians, and what reason does he give? 2 Cor 6:17, 18.

NOTE: "The world is the instrument that sifts the church and tests the
genuineness of its members. The world holds out inducements that, when
accepted, place the believer where his life is not in harmony with his pro-
fession....
"If you go forward toward heaven, the world will rub hard against you.
At every step you will have to urge your way against Satan and his evil
angels, and against all who transgress God's law. Earthly authorities will
interpose. You will meet tribulations, bruising of the spirit, hard speeches,
ridicule, persecutions. Men will require your conformity to laws and cus-
toms that would render you disloyal to God. Here is where God's people
find the cross in the way to life (MS 3, 1885)." -6BC 1102.

SEPARATION BECOMES INEVITABLE IN THE SEVENTH·DAY

ADVENTIST CHURCH

KEY TEXT: "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt
thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judg-
ment" (Ex 23:2).
A. The Church Turns From Following Her Leader
1. In spite of having the living messenger of the Lord in their midst,
what experience did the professed people of God repeat in their ac-
tions? Acts 7:38 (last part), 39.

NOTE: "The church has turned back from following Christ her Leader and
is steadily retreating toward Egypt. Yet few are alarmed or astonished at
their want of spiritual power. Doubt, and even disbelief of the testimonies
of the Spirit of God, is leavening our churches everywhere. Satan would
have it thus. Ministers who preach self instead of Christ would have it thus.
The testimonies are unread and unappreciated. God has spoken to you. Light
has been shining from His word and from the testimonies, and both have
been slighted and disregarded. The result is apparent in the lack of purity
and devotion and earnest faith among us." -5T 217.
"We have been going back to Egypt rather than on to Canaan. Shall we
not reverse the order of. things? Shall we not have plain, wholesome food
on our tables?" -CD 319.
2. If the whole of the published testimonies are considered, can any
prophecy be found stating that the church has again returned to fol-
low her true Leader? What other testimony confirms the fact that the
church continued in thc backtrack? Hos .11:4; 12:10.

NOTE: "... The facts concerning the real condition of the professed people
of God, speak more loudly than their profession, and made it evident that
some power has cut the cable that anchored them to the Eternal Rock, and
that they are drifting away to sea, without chart or compass." -Review and
Herald, July 24, 1888.

B. The Lord Reveals What is Carefully Concealed From Human View

3. After the solemn messages of 1888 were rejected and the needful re-
vival and reformation did not take place, what prophecy began to be
fulfilled? Lk 11:24-26.

NOTE: "The perils of the last days are upon us. Satan takes the control of
every mind that is not decidedly under the control of the Spirit of God.
Some have been cultivating hatred against the men whom God has com-
-26-
missioned to bear a special message to the world. They began this satanic
work at Minneapolis. Afterward, when they saw and felt the demonstration
of the Holy Spirit testifying that the message was of God, they hated it the
more, because it was a testimony against them. They would not humble
their hearts to repent, to give God the glory, and vindicate the right. They
went on in their own spirit, filled with envy, jealousy, and evil surmisings,
as did the Jews. They opened their hearts to the enemy of God and man.
Yet these men have been holding positions of trust, and have been molding
the work after their own similitude, as far as they possibly could...." -TM
79,80.
4. Although the true condition was carefully concealed from human sight,
what was known to the Lord and revealed by Him to His messenger?
Ps 50:17-21.

NOTE: "Who can truthfully say: 'Our gold is tried in the fire; our garments
are "lUspotted by the world'? I saw our Instructor pointing to the garments
of so-called righteousness. Stripping them off, He laid bare the defilement
beneath. Then He said to me: 'Can you not see how they have pretentiously
covered up their defilement and rottenness of character? "How is the faith-
ful city become an harlotl" My Father's house is made a house of merchan-
dise, a place whence the divine presence and glory have departed! For this
cause there is weakness, and strength is lacking.' " -8T 250.

5. Why should we reject the guidance offered by those who depend on

human wisdom? Mt 15:14; Jer 17:5.

NOTE: "Finite men should beware of seeking to control their fellow men,
taking the place assigned to the Holy Spirit....
"That men should keep alive the spirit which ran riot at Minneapolis is
an offense to God. All heaven is indignant at the spirit that for years has
been revealed in our publishing institution at Battle Creek. Unrighteous-
ness is practiced that God will not tolerate... ." -TM 76, 77.

C. Like Priest, Like People

6. When there was an apparent response to the appeals of the Lord to
the leaders through His messenger and this was reported by the leader
of the church, what sad truth did the Lord reveal? Jer 3:10 (last part).

NOTE: "After I received word in regard to the excellent meeting of con-

fession and unity that had been held in Battle Creek I was writing in my
diary and was about to record the thankfulness I felt because a change had
come, when my hand was arrested, and there came to me the words: 'Write
it not. No change for the better has taken place... .' " -8T 231.
7. What awareness do the people and their leaders have of the deception
involving them? Rev 3:17.

-27-
NOTE: "... Intellect and earthly riches were powerless to remove the de-
fects of the Laodicean church, or to remedy their deplorable condition.
They were blind, yet felt that they were well off. The Spirit of God did not
illumine their minds, and they did not perceive their sinfulness; therefore
they did not feel the necessity of help.
"To be without the graces of the Spirit of God is sad indeed; but it is a
more terrible condition to be thus destitute of spirituality and of Christ, and
yet try to justify ourselves by telling those who are alarmed for us that we
need not their fears and pity. Fearful is the power of self-deception on the
human mindl What blindness! Setting light for darkness and darkness for
lightl ..." -4T 88.
8. To whom do the expressions of confidence apply, to those who have
stood faithfully for the truth, or to those who for one pretext or an-
other have compromised? Jn 8:31, 32.

D. False Leaders
9. How does the great deceiver use Laodicean church leaders to keep his
hold on the people? 2 Chr 18:21 (first part).

NOTE: "... He (Satan) says, 'I will go forth and be a lying spirit to deceive
those that I can, to criticize, and condemn, and falsify.' Let the son of de-
ceit and false witness be entertained by a church that has had great light,
great evidence, and that church will discard the message the Lord has sent,
and receive the most unreasonable assertions and false suppositions and
false theories. Satan laughs at their folly; for he knows what truth is." -TM
409.
10. Wherein have the leaders trusted, and in what ways are they walking
in the very footsteps of the Jewish leaders? Jer 7:4; Mic 3:11; Acts
7:51.

NOTE: "Many will stand in our pulpits with the torch of false prophecy in
their hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan. If doubts and unbelief
are cherished, the faithful ministers will be removed from the people who
think they know so much. 'If thou hadst known,' said Christ. 'even thou,
at least in this day, the things which belong unto thy peacel but now they
are hid from thine eyes.' " -TM 409, 410.

THE LORD BRINGS SEPARATION IN TIME OF OPEN APOSTASY

KEY TEXT: "Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish pluck-
eth it down with her hands" (Prov 14:1).
A. SDAs Originally Non-Participants in War
1. What general rule did Jesus give for the New Testament era relative
to taking part in war? Jn 18:36; Mt 5:44, 45.

NOTE: "The government under which Jesus lived was corrupt and oppres-
sive; on every hand were crying abuses, - extortion, intolerance, and grind-
ing cruelty. Yet the Saviour attempted no civil reforms. He attacked no
national abuses, nor condemned the national enemies. He did not interfere
with the authority or administration of those in power. He who was our
example kept aloof from earthly governments. Not because He was indif-
ferent to the woes of men, but because the remedy did not lie in merely
human and external measures. To be efficient, the cure must reach men
individually, and must regenerate the heart." -DA 509.

2. In harmony with other denominations, such as the Quakers, Men-

nonites, Dunkards, etc., what was the denominational position taken
relative to war? 2 Cor 10:3, 4.

NOTE: "(Excerpts from) Report of the Third Annual Session of the Gen-
eral Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (Review and Herald, May 23,
1865) :
"Resolved, That we recognize civil government as ordained of God, that
order, justice, and quiet may be maintained in the land; and that the people
of God may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. In
accordance with this fact we acknowledge the justice of rendering tribute,
custom, honor, and reverence to civil power, as enjoined in the New
Testament. While we thus cheerfully render to Caesar the things which the
Scriptures show to be his, we are compelled to decline all participation
in acts of war and bloodshed as being inconsistent with the duties enjoined
upon us by our divine Mastel' toward our enemies and toward all mankind."
-Francis McLellan Wilcox, Seventh-day Adventists in Time of War, p. 24.

3. What was the basis for this stand, and how was it confirmed by the
Lord's messenger? Ex 20:3-17.

NOTE: "I was shown that God's people, who are His peculiar treasure,
cannot engage in this perplexing war, for it is opposed to every principle of
their faith." -IT 361.
B. SDAs Agree to Enter the Armies of the Nations
-29-
4. What obligation - similar to the requirements imposed on ancient Is-
rael - was placed on the church that had tumed back to Egypt? 1 Sam
8:16-20.

NOTE: "... He (Samuel) faithfully set before them the burdens that would
be laid upon them, and showed the contrast between such a state of op-
pression and their present comparatively free and prosperous condition.
Their king would imitate the pomp and luxury of other monarchs, to support
cwhich, grievous exactions upon their persons and property would be neces-
sary. The goodliest of their young men he would require for his service ... ."
-PP606.
5. When principles are involved, what instruction should we follow? Acts
5:29.

NOTE: "... vVe are to recognize human government as an ordinance of

divine appointment, and teach obedience to it as a sacred duty, within its
legitimate sphere. But when its claims conflict with the claims of God, we
must obey God rather than men. God's word must be recognized as above
all human legislation. A 'Thus saith the Lord' is not to be set aside for a
'Thus saith the church,' or a 'Thus saith the state.' The crown of Christ is to
be lifted above the diadems of earthly potentates." -AA 69.

6. What guilt did the SDA General Conference share when they consent-
ed to the actions of their representatives in Europe, instead of cor-
recting them? Ex 23:2; Prov 1:10; Ps 50:18 (first part).

NOTE: "... If wrongs are apparent among His people, and if the servants
of God pass on indifferent to them, they virtually sustain and justify the
sinner, and are alike guilty and will just as surely receive the displeasure
of God; for they will be made responsible for the sins of the guilty...."
-3T 265, 266.
C. Loyal Adventists Put Out of Their Own Church

7. What was the result in sixteen different countries in Europe when this
change was enforced upon the people by the church leaders? Mt
10:34-36; In 16:2; Mk 13:12, 13; Ps 41:9.

NOTE: "... They (who have professed faith in the third angel's message)
become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbath-
keepers are brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apos-
tates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them,
and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them."
-GC 608.
8. What impossibility made the separation inevitable? Amos 3:3; Mt 6:24,
25.

-30-
9. What consolation and blessing was held out to these faithful ones, when
not only the world but their former brethren turned against them? Mt
5:10, II; Is 66:5.

NOTE: "Our Lord says, Under conviction of sin, remember that I died for
you. When oppressed and persecuted and afflicted for My sake and the
gospel's, remember My love, so great that for you I gave My life. When
your duties appear stern and severe, and your burdens too heavy to bear,
remember that for your sake I endured the cross, despising the shame. When
your heart shrinks from the trying ordeal, remember that your Redeemer
liveth to make intercession for you.
"... In their tribulation they found comfort in the hope of their Lord's
return. Unspeakably precious to them was the thought, 'As often as ye eat
this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till He come:
1 Cor. II:26." -DA 659.
10. What further encouragement was given by the Lord to the little rem-
nant who remained true to principle? Lk 12:32.

NOTE: "... And as they (the disciples) went out in their Master's name,
facing reproach and poverty and persecution, they often strengthened their
hearts by repeating His injunction, spoken on this last journey, 'Fear not,
little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the king-
dom ... ." -DA 496.

Lesson No. 12 Sabbath, December 22, 1973

TWO MESSAGES THAT BRING SEPARATION IN OUR TIME

KEY TEXT: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that
needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth"
(2 Tim 2:15).
A. The Message for the World
1. What is the significance of the message telling of the fall of Babylon,_
and to whom is it particularly applicable? Rev 14:8.

NOTE: "Fearful is the issue to which the world is to be brought. The pow-
ers of earth, uniting to war against the commandments of God, will decree
that 'all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond' (Revelation
13:16), shall conform to the customs of the church by the observance of the
false sabbath. All who refuse compliance will be visited with civil penalties,
and it will finally be declared that they are deserving of death. On the
other hand, the law of God enjoining the Creator's rest day demands obe-
dience and threatens wrath against all who transgress its precepts." -GC
604.
-31-
2. What is included by the expressions "Babylon, ... that great city" and
"Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots"? Rev 14:8; 17:5.

NOTE: "Bablyon is said to be 'the mother of harlots.' By her daughters

must be symbolized churches that cling to her doctrines and traditions, and
follow her example of sacrificing the truth and the approval of God, in
order to form an unlawful alliance with the world. The message of Revela-
tion 14, announcing the fall of Babylon must apply to religious bodies that
were once pure and have become corrupt. ..." -GC 382, 383.
3. When the message is given the second time, what is revealed concern-
ing the extent of her fall, and what is implied by this? Rev 18:2, 3.

NOTE: "... The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second
angel, is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which
have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in
at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel's message
as it swells to a loud cry. And the people of God are thus prepared to stand
in the hour of temptation, which they are soon to meet. 1 saw a great light
resting upon them, and they united to fearlessly proclaim the third angel's
message." EW 277.
B. The Message for the Church
4. What message is specifically directed to the leaders of the church in
the last period of time? Rev 3:14-22.

NOTE: "I saw that the testimony of the True Witness has not been half
heeded. The solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs
has been lightly esteemed, if not entirely disregarded. This testimony must
work deep repentance; all who truly receive it will obey it and be puri-
fied." -EW 270.
5. What resulted when some believers accepted the message, while others
refused to heed it? What history repeated itself? Amos 9:9.

NOTE: "I asked the meaning of the shaking 1 had seen and was shown that
it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of
the True Witness to the Laodiceans. This will have its effect upon the heart
of the receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the
straight truth. Some will not bear this straight testimony. They will rise up
against it, and this is what will cause a shaking among God's people." -EW
270.
6. Since the leadership and the great majority of the church rejected the
counsel of the True Witness, what appeal is directed to the people as
individuals? Rev 3:20.

NOTE: "Our Redeemer sends His messengers to bear a testimony to His

people. He says, 'Behold, 1 stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear
-32-
My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him,
and he with Me.' Revelation 3:20. But many refuse to receive Him. The
Holy Spirit waits to soften and subdue hearts; but they are not willing to
open the door and let the Saviour in, for fear that He will require some-
thing of them. And so Jesus of Nazareth passes by. He longs to bestow on
them the rich blessings of His grace, but they refuse to accept them. What
a terrible thing it is to exclude Christ from His own temple I What a loss to
the churchl" -6T 262.
C. Confusion Arising from Misapplication
7. What condition is developing in the SDA Church?

NOTE: "... The world must not be introduced into the church, and mar-
ried to the church, forming a bond of unity. Through this means the church
will become indeed corrupt, and as stated in Revelation, 'a cage of every
unclean and hateful bird.' " -TM 265.
8. What separation is necessary in view of the startling facts revealed to
the servant of the Lord? Jas 4:4.

NOTE: "As I saw the dreadful fact that God's people were conformed to the
world, with no distinction, except in name, between many of the professed
disciples of the meek and lowly Jesus and unbelievers, my soul felt deep
anguish. I saw tbat Jesus was wounded and put to an open shame. Said the
angel, as with sorrow he saw the professed people of God loving the world,
partaking of its spirit, and following its fashions: 'Cut loose! Cut loose! lest
He appoint you your portion with hypocrites and unbelievers outside the
city. Your profession will only cause you greater anguish, and your punish-
ment will be greater because ye knew His will, but did it not.' " -IT 133.
9. What is the effect of God's call for the true believers to separate them-
selves from all worldly influences? 2 Tim 3:5.

NOTE: "... Real conversion is a decided change of feelings and motives;

it is a virtual taking leave of worldly connections, a hastening from their
spiritual atmosphere, a withdrawing from the controlling power of their
thoughts, opinions, and influences. The separation causes pain and bitter-
ness to both parties... ." -5T 82, 83.
10. Why is it necessary for the true believers to respond to the call for
separation before the loud cry is given to the whole world? Joel 2:11-
14,23.

NOTE: "All heaven is interested in the salvation of man and is ready to

pour upon him her beneficent gifts if he will comply with the conditions
Christ has made: 'Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith
the Lord, and touch not the unclean.' " -4T 577.

SEPARATION BRINGS TRUE UNITY

KEY TEXT: "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy

nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises
of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous
light" (1 Pet 2:9).
A. The Lord's Goal
1. What is the Lord's unselfish purpose in calling out a people for Him-
self? Gen 12:2, 3.

NOTE: "It is God's purpose that His people shall be a sanctified, purified,
holy people, communicating light to all around them. It is His purpose that,
by exemplifying the truth in their lives, they shall be a praise in the earth.
The grace of Christ is sufficient to bring this about. But let God's people
remember that only as they believe and work out the principles of the gospel
can He make them a praise in the earth...." -8T 14.
2. How did the Lord preface His special instruction to Israel concerning
health refonn practices? Deut 14:2, 3.

NOTE: "... From the beginning, Christ has chosen His people out of the
world and required them to be separate, having no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness. If they love God and keep His commandments,
they will be far from having the friendship, and loving the pleasures, of the
world. There is no concord between Christ and Belial." -IT 279.
3. How far reaching was the purpose of God, and how do we know that
the covenant was to include more than those who lived at the time it
was given? Deut 29:13-15.

NOTE: "The people of God are His representatives upon the earth, and He
intends that they shall be lights in the moral darkness of this world. Scat-
tered all over the country, in the towns, cities, and villages, they are God's
witnesses, the channels through which He will communicate to an unbeliev-
ing world the knowledge of His will and the wonders of His grace. It is His
plan that all who are partakers of the great salvation shall be missionaries
for Him... ." -PP 134.
B. God's Power Demonstrated
4. What did the Lord clearly demonstrate for all to see, and of what does
He want all to be thoroughly convinced? Ex 9:13-16; Rom 9:17.

NOTE: "Care should be given to teach every man his dependence upon
God; for He is the source of all wisdom and power and efficiency... ."
-TM 374.
-34-
"... There is now need of much prayer. Christ commands, 'Pray without
ceasing;' that is, keep the mind uplifted to God, the source of all power and
efficiency." -Ibid., p. 511.
5. What power was to attend those who were united with God in the
great work that was to be done? How do individuals and churches for-
feit this power? Deut 32:30; 26:8; Is 30:17; Jas 4:8.

NOTE: "We often hear the remark: 'You are too exclusive.' As a people we
would make any sacrifice to save souls, or lead them to the truth. But to
unite with them, to love the things that they love, and have friendship with
the world, we dare not, for we should then be at enmity with God." -IT
282.
6. Where is this power found today? Rom 1:16; Jn 1:12.

NOTE: "God hears the prayers of all who seek Him in truth. He has the
power that we all need. He fills the heart with love, and joy, and peace,
and holiness." -9T 169.
"The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort. ...
The men of prayer are the men of power." -PP 509.

C. Separate From Sin - At One With God

7. How completely is the Lord able to separate us from sin in this life,
::nd how are we to live henceforth? Heb 7:25; 1 Jn 1:9; 2:1.

NOTE: "... The plan of redemption contemplates our complete recovery

from the power of Satan. Christ always separates the contrite soul from sin.
He came to destroy the works of the devil, and He has made provision that
the Holy Spirit shall be imparted to every repentant soul, to keep him from
sinning." -DA 311.
8. What separation and what union is mentioned in the epistle to the
Ephesians? Eph 4:21-25, 3-7.

NOTE: "A union with Christ by living faith is enduring; every other union
must perish. Christ first chose us, paying an infinite price for our redemp-
tion; and the true believer chooses Christ as first and last and best in every-
thing. But this union costs us something. It is a union of utter dependence,
to be entered into by a proud being. All who form this union must feel their
need of the atoning blood of Christ. They must have a change of heart.
They must submit their own will to the will of God. There will be a struggle
with outward and internal obstacles. There must be a painful work of de-
tachment as well as a work of attachment., • -5T 231.

9. How did Jude understand that the believers could be kept from be-
coming again entangled in sin and the world? Jude 24.

-35-
NOTE: "We must feel our utter dependence on Christ. We must live by
faith on the Son of God." -5T 231, 232.
10. What condition of unity will be reached by the true church and all its
members? Eph 5:27; Song 6:10; Rev 3:5, 21.

NOTE: "Clad in the am10r of Christ's righteousness, the church is to enter

upon her final conflict. 'Fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as
an army with banners' (Song of Solomon 6:10), she is to go forth into all
the world, conquering and to conquer." -PK 725.
