or leadership activities will convert to recertification credits? For answers to these questions, participate in today's session with the HR
Certification Institute's staff.

Moderator: Welcome to the Virtual Recertification Chat session. You may now submit your questions.

Middleboro, MA: I took a 2 day seminar at Boston University called Relationship Management: Up Down and Sideways. My boss
(CFO) recommended it since I am the HR Director. He thought it would be good for my development and HR growth as a member of the
senior management team. Will this count for Recertification?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes, This seminar would count towards General Recertification credit hours.

San Diego, CA: If my certification expires on 6/30 when is the last day that I can submit my recertification application?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: All of your activities must be completed by 6/30/2010. They are due for submission on that date
too. You can turn them in as late as July 29 without having to pay the $25 late fee. After 6 months the late fee goes up to $50. The latest
we will accept the app with the late fee is 6/30/2010.

Albany NY: I worked on developing a web based new hire orientation for our outside sales force. Am I able to submit this for on the
job experience? If so how is the best way to submit this?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Under the on-the-job experience category, recertification credit can be earned for a first-time work
experience that adds to the understanding of the HR body of knowledge. Please provide a brief description of your new experience, the
duration dates and hours spent on the project. If the calculated hours spent on the project(s) exceeds the 20-hour maximum, please request
20 hours on the application.

Las Vegas, NV: Can I receive credit for teaching a seminar on resume writing and job seeking sponsored by the local university?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes, recertification credit is awarded only for the first time the presentation is made. Preparation
time is taken into consideration by awarding 1.5 credit hours for every hour of the first presentation.

Burlington, Vermont: How do I submit membership to SHRM and local SHRM chapter for recertification credits?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We award 3 recertification credit hours per year (maximum 9 credits) within your recertification
cycle for a "national" SHRM membership. We do not award recertification credit hours for your membership to the Local chapter.

Littleton, CO: Hi - I am taking online courses through SkillSoft in order to recertify. How do I account for the 'hours'? Do I use the
number of hours it takes me to complete the online course or is there another process? Thank you.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Any online courses must be able to tell you up front how many hours are spent in the online
course instruction. We do not award credit for time spent in online research, pre-work or homework.

Warwick, NY: What are the options to get strategic credit on line? I need to fill this requirement in 6 weeks so online is a good option
for me.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You may consider using our Searchable Directory for pre-approved events to find your specific
needs. You may also call HR Certification to speak to a recertification specialist for more tips and pointers. Try using the link below to get
to the Searchable directory: http://hrci.cyzap.net/hrcicertonline/index.htm?searchevents

West Valley, NY: Last year I was laid off and was lucky enough to find another job shortly after. If I happened to be laid off again and
not be so lucky, what are some of the activities that I can do to maintain my certification and keep low cost? I just submitted my credits to
begin a new cycle (Jun 30, 2010). Thank you! CFC
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Good question. While you are working, keep track of any HR-specific in-house training you
attend, as well as first-time projects you are involved in. Check out our Searchable Online Directory:
http://hrci.cyzap.net/hrcicertonline/index.htm?searchevents. Check out SHRM and other associations for any free webcasts that they
may offer. Remember that you can get recertification credit for HR-specific presentations or Instruction as well as volunteering your HR-
expertise to an organization or volunteering for an HR-specific organization.

Troy, Michigan: How long does it typically take to be re-certified after submitting credits for review?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Please allow four to six weeks from the time we receive your application for review and
notification. Applications submitted near a deadline (June 30 or Dec 31) may take six to eight weeks to review due to the higher volume
of recertification applications received.

Albany NY: What date should be used when adding archived webinars to your activities?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You should use the date that you viewed the webinar.
Greensboro, NC: I am GPHR certified and due for recertification by the end of June. I'm in need of about 15 more GPHR credits but
finding very little opportunity to collect those. I transferred one of our employees from Canada to the US within this time period - A first
time experience with all the Visa and other transferee challenges. Can I use that experience for the GPHR recert?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: To find activities that may have been pre-approved for International credit hours, you may try
using our on-line searchable directory. http://hrci.cyzap.net/hrcicertonline/index.htm?searchevents. Your relocation activity described
would count towards General recertification credit hours, under Workforce Planning and Employment.

Washington, DC: I attended the 2009 SHRM conference in New Orleans for the first time. How do I count the recertification credits for
that? Once for the whole conference or for each individual workshop/session I attended?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: There a couple of options, depending on the kind of credit you are asking for. You can submit the
conference as one activity with the specific dates and be awarded 12 hours of general credit. To have more than 12 hours awarded or to
have any kind of specified credit awarded, you must submit the sessions you attended individually.

Pittsburgh, PA: I have been certified as both a PHR and SPHR. I am currently certified as an SPHR and wanted to know what the
process would be to switch my certification back to PHR?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You would need to retake the PHR exam again. We would not downgrade the certification.

San Francisco, CA: My recertification end date is May 31, 2010. I received an email on May 5th that my recertification application
has been approved. If I receive CPE credits between May 5th and May 31st, will they count towards my next recertification period
(ending May 2013)? I had passed the PHR exam on 5/12/07. Would CPE credits received after 5/12/10 be counted for the next
recertification period?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: The cycle dates do not change if you recertify early. Your end date is still 5/31/2010 and
activities that take place between now and then are within your current cycle and may not be applied to the next cycle which begins June
1, 2010.

Las Vegas, NV: I teach an HR Management course at the university. The first time I taught it was in the previous re-certification cycle.
It's now three years later...can I submit that same course for this next re-certification cycle?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: No, unless the course drastically changed within three years.

Yonkers, NY: I attended the annual conference of the PSCA does this count towards general recert credits?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We award recertification credit hours for any HR related sessions.

Middleboro, MA: I am in the process of changing our 401k provider from one vendor to another. This is a big change for our
company. This is the first time I have done a project like this. Would this count as on the job credits?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes, you may earn recertification credit hours under the OTJ Experience category.

Warwick, RI: I am participating in an MBA program which my Employer considers job-related. The last courses I took were Financial
Reporting and Analysis, Managerial Accounting/Operations. Would these types of courses be considered?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You would list the HR related courses to receive general credit hours. If you are SPHR certified,
you may consider listing the Business related courses for Strategic Management credit hours.

Chicago IL: Regarding webinars - as long as they are HR related, do they count toward recertification or do they need to specifically list
they are pre-approved for credit?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Activities do not have to be pre-approved for earn recertification credit. They must be HR-specific,
take place within your recertification cycle and they must be a structured activities with expected learning outcomes. If there is a test
offered, you must take and pass the test. Remember to differentiate between webinars and webcasts. Webcasts are limited to 20 hours of
credit.

Charleston, SC: I participate in an HR Roundtable group specific to my employer's industry. We arrive at the annual meeting with
discussion topics and an agenda. We have a moderator conduct our meetings. How do I account for the hours? Am I able to count all
meeting time that is not social in nature? Are they general or strategic management credits? Thank you.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We do not award credit for Roundtable events.

Jacksonville, Florida: I created many Behavioral Interview Guides for managers to conduct their 2nd interview after the first HR
interview. They are very specific to different jobs and departments. Each guide required an analysis of the job description and
competency requirements. I met with a Manager for approximately 1 1/2 hrs on each one and then assembled the guides. On some jobs
I created "Job Previews" for the final candidates. Are these eligible for credit?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: If this is the first time that you have done this HR function, then you can request credit under On
the Job. Remember: You need to report the number of hours you invested in the activity. However, the maximum that may be awarded
from the On the Job category is 20 hours.

Dallas, TX: Last year I traveled to train a new recruiter to the company for a week. Since I trained him on tools, system, processes and
values of the company and this was my first time to train a new national team member, can I claim this for on the job experience?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: The purpose of the On-The-Job experience category is to allow the HR professional to increase
their HR Knowledge. It is difficult determine how your HR Knowledge increased by this initiative.

Davis, CA: I am redesigning a 40-health and safety course that I taught six years ago. Can I receive any recertification credits for this
activity?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. The activity must take place within your 3-year recertification cycle and it must be a New
activity.

San Diego, CA: I developed a safety program including a committee for the first time at my previous employer will this count towards
my job experience credits?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: It would count only if it took place within your current recertification cycle.

New York, NY: In reviewing some of the archived sessions on HR.com, there doesn't seem to be a lot that are geared towards GPHR
recertification. After listening to several that I thought were geared towards global recertification, I noticed that they were applicable for
General credits. The names were Practical Applications and Recommendations for HR and OD Professionals in the Global Workplace,
Best Practices for Preparing your H-1B FY 2011 Applications, Benchmark your Immigration Firm: Common Myths that Cost you Time &
Money and How Leaders Drive Workforce Performance - Global Research Highlights and Leadership Best Practices 050410. These all
seem to be global topics - is there opportunity to have them counted as Global credits?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We only award international credit hours for subject matter that increases your knowledge of
International Practices.

Warwick, RI: I would like to submit for credit on work performed on the job, for example, the development of a Bonus Scorecard. Is
there a general outline I should follow? Is supporting documentation required? How should it be handled if I was part of a team that
worked on the project?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes, you would be able to use this initiative for a new work experience. Please provide a brief
description of your new experience, the duration dates and hours spent on the project. If the calculated hours spent on the project(s)
exceeds the 20-hour maximum, please request 20 hours on the application.

Dallas, Texas: Our company went through an implementation of a new HRIS system which included moving three separate pay entities
to a common paymaster. Would that project count for credit and if so, how would I go about submitting that project for credit?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes. Please provide a brief description of your new experience, the duration dates and hours
spent on the project. If the calculated hours spent on the project(s) exceeds the 20-hour maximum, please request 20 hours on the
application.

Wilmington, DE: My PHR certification expires 6/30/2010 and I am about 14 hours short of my 60. I am involved in a large
reorganization/redeployment of staff but I don't know if that would qualify as on the job experience and if it did, I don't know if it would
be 14 credits. If my certification expires, how would I get reinstated at a later date?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You need to ask yourself some questions. First of all, what is your role in the organization? Next,
have you held this role in a re-org before? It must be a first-time, work experience in order to earn credit under On the Job. If it is
appropriate to report, then please provide your best estimate of the actual hours that you invested in the project. However, the maximum
amount that we may count from that category toward the 60 hours needed is 20.

New York, NY: I took a Masters level course at a local university entitled Organization Development and Change Management. The
discussions were not limited to US based companies and several of the case studies were on global organizations including British
Airways and Volvo. Would this class count towards my GPHR International Credit requirement?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: College courses would be awarded credit based on the primary learning objectives.

Jacksonville, Florida: I read that giving a presentation on company policies such as in New Hire Orientation does not count;
however, I coordinate the employees, speakers and plan the curriculum for Orientation. This is a session that runs monthly from 10:00 -
5:00. Would this count at least for 6 hrs for doing it one time? I have coordinated it for the entire 3 years.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: This would not count for credit under Instruction, as you are not instructing. If this was a new duty
for you during your current recertification cycle, then you can submit it under On the Job.

Burlington, Vermont: During my recent layoff, I volunteered at a local college and helped them design a handbook for their internship
program. I also contacted employers to recruit them as internship sites. Could I submit this experience for recert? credits? If so, how should
I calculate what I'm eligible for? I worked about 20 hours/week for 6 weeks.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: No, because this was a volunteer mission it was not for your employer so "on-the-job" experience
would not apply. However, you would be able to use the time spent as mentoring. We award 5 credit hours per "year" of service under
the Leadership category. There is a 10 hour maximum under this category.

Dallas, TX: At my company, we are involved in volunteering activities and organizing food drives, etc. If I am a chair person for these
activities, can I claim credits for it since it is something that the company is doing for the community?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: It is difficult to determine how the primary function of your duties relates to HR. We award credit
for activities that increase your HR knowledge. If for some reason you feel that you can relate this activity to your primary HR Job Function,
you would need to do so if you want to submit this activity for recertification credit hours.

Chicago IL: In regard to a previous inquiry listed above, the recertification handbook lists a max of 10 credit hours throughout the
recertification cycle and your response shows a max of 9. Since the cycle actually accounts for a 4 year span (EX May 2007- May 2010)
would this be pro-rated and actually account for the full 10 hours?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: I'm sorry. I reviewed the questions, but I did not see one like the one you describe. If you
referencing credit awarded for Professional Membership, then the maximum amount awarded for SHRM National membership is 9 hours.
The recertification cycle is 3 years: May 07-May08, May 08-May 09, May 09- May 10. It is awarded .25 hours per month, 3 hours per
year, for a max of 9 hours per 3 year cycle.

Madison, WI: I have been unable to find the exact location to enter my recertification data on the SHMR website. Can you furnish the
specific link? Thank you,
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You would visit our website to enter your recertification credit hours. www.HRCI.org You would
log-in using your HR ID# and your password. If you need help, you may click on Log in help.

San Diego, CA: Would approved courses from www.lawroom.com e.g. ORG-PROGRAM-60769 be classified as an E-Learning/Online
course?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: That course is considered E-learning and would not be subject to the 20 hour maximum placed on
webcasts.

Ft Lauderdale, FL: I have attended several Fred Pryor Seminars that are HR related. They gave me a certificate of attendance for 0.6
Continuing Education Units and the certificate states that they are an IACET Provider. Do these seminars count toward recertification credit
and if so, does it count for 6 hours?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: The courses must be HR-specific. .6 CEUs from IACET are translated to 6 hours of classroom time,
meaning 6 hours of recertification credit.

Las Vegas, NV: What is the difference between webinars and webcasts? I was under the impression that together they count toward
the 20 credit max, but is that not the case? Thanks!
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Please note that webcast or webinar, video-conferences, tapes & cd's are considered passive
learning. Please note that there is a 20-hour maximum for these type of passive learning activities.

Middleboro, MA: If I have extra credits, can I carry them forward for the next 3 year cycle?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: No

San Diego, CA: If we attend HR related training courses that our internal education department hosts, are we able to get credit for
those?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes

Jacksonville, Florida: I completed a Masters level course in Instructional Design at a local university. This course was recommended
by my AVP of HR. The course was valued at 3 CEU's. I will be using the information to develop curriculum for employees. Will this count?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes

West Palm Beach, FL: What is the process of re-certification if you are not able to meet the credit criteria?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: If you cannot meet the continuing education recertification requirement, you may choose to
recertify by retesting. For more information on that go to our website http://www.hrci.org/Recertification.aspx?id=140.

Ft Lauderdale, FL: My PHR certification expires 06/2011. I hear that there are changes taking place in starting Jan 2011. Will there
be any changes for recertification that are different from now? If so and if I have enough points this year, can I submit in 2010 before the
changes in 2011?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: The big changes in 2011 are in regards to the eligibility requirement. If you are considering
taking the SPHR or GPHR in 2011 or later than you need to find out about the new eligibility requirements here:
http://www.hrci.org/hrcertification.aspx?id=2147483793. There are no "Big changes" for recertification requirements in store for
2011.

Rome, GA: Are there any circumstances under which an extension on the certification deadline would be available? For example, due
to FMLA leave or unemployment? Thanks.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Who Qualifies for an Extension? You may qualify for an extension if you * have been out of work
for at least one year of your three-year certification cycle because of layoff, child birth or child care * have suffered from a serious illness
or have taken care of a seriously ill close family member * have been or are being deployed to active duty in the armed forces for at least
one year. For more information, please copy and paste the link below.
http://www.hrci.org/Recertification.aspx?id=2147483942&terms=extension+request

Chicago IL: I have developed our org's AAP and have participated in an OFCCP audit. Could any of this be applied towards strategic
or other credit?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: No, these activities would fall under traditional HR job functions.

Miami, FL: For PHR recertification, so we need specific strategic management points or is that for SPHR only?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: The Strategic Business Management credit requirement only applies to SPHRs. However, if you
take a course that is appropriate for SBM credit, those hours still count toward your general, 60 hour requirement for PHR. We see PHRs
submit them all the time.

Los Angeles, CA: I'm currently enrolled in a PHR course using the SHRM Learning System; I'm taking the course for re-cert credit. I
understand this would allow me to take 35 hrs. of credit after I complete course. Is there an exam I need to take after class? I've received
conflicting information and wanted to confirm.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We will award credit hours for completing the course. Typically the host organization has
determined the amount of hours awarded for completing the course.

Riviera Beach, FL: If my certification expires, how would I get reinstated at a later date?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You would need to take and pass the exam again. At that point your recertification cycles would
be beginning with that pass date. If you were to re-take in 2011 or later, then you must meet the new eligibility requirements.

Los Angeles, CA: I conducted 3 training classes (instructor-led) on showing our HR staff how to use our HRMS system. Is this type of
training eligible for re-cert credits? Thank you.
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We would only award credit hours for a formal training session on a HR new system. Preparation
time is taken into consideration by awarding 1.5 credit hours for every hour of the first presentation. We do not award credit for multiple
presentations on the same topic.

Warwick, NY: I purchased a 3 hour Video program titled How to Deal with Difficult People from Career track. I have watched it.
Would you consider this HR related?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Based on the title it appears that this would be a personal development course. You would need
to fax/email the course description to HR Certification Institute for further review if interested.

Jacksonville, FL: Regarding the previous question on Masters level Instructional Design class that the University valued as '3 CEU's -
would the credits be 3hrs or 30 hrs?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Here is a tool to help calculate CEU credit: What is the amount of time spent in the classroom?
The HR Certification Institute will award credit for time spent in the classroom. If IACET has awarded a course 3 CEUs, then they have
evaluated the course as 30 hours of classroom time and that is what we will award. However, if the course lasted half of a day, then the
"CEUs" were not awarded by IACET and 30 hours would be grossly inappropriate. 3 hours will be awarded. I hope this is helpful. Call if
you need more clarification.

Ft Lauderdale, FL: As a follow up to my Fred Pryor Seminar question, would the following titles be considered HR specific? They are all
related to what I do as an HR Manager: The Ultimate Course in Payroll Management The Essentials of HR Law 2010 Workers
Compensation 2010 OSHA Compliance 2010 Criticism & Discipline Skills for Managers & Supervisors. Each seminar was 0.6 CEU's
approved through IACET. Thanks!
Virtual Recertification Counselor: All but "Criticism & Discipline Skills for Managers & Supervisors" are HR-specific. The last one is
likely a management course vs. HR course. .6 CEUs through IACET means 6 hours of recertification credit.

Chicago IL: I understand that webcasts are passive learning and the max is up to 20 hours of recertification credit. What is the
difference between a webcast & a webinar? Would webinars be listed under continued education - is there no maximum hours for
webinars?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: Webinars can be interactive and Webcast are just a broadcast. Webinars would be listed under
the continuing education category for it would still be considered passive learning so it would count towards the 20 hour maximum. E-
learning would not because typically E-Learning sessions have some sort of assessment at the end.

Poway, CA: If we attend HR related seminars that our internal educational department hosts, are we able to use those for credit?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: We will award recertification credit for HR-specific, in-house training.

Orange County, CA: I conducted research for an Employee On boarding and Employee Performance system. However, there was a
hold on the project due to funding, would I still be able to get credit for the research I completed?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: You can submit the research if it was the first time that you have ever researched those topics for a
project.

Los Angeles, CA: I re-Designed, developed and implemented the HRIS and Data Processing manuals. Would this qualify for re-cert
credits?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: If this was the first time that you have re-designed your HRIS/manuals, then you could submit this
for recertification credit under On the Job.

San Diego, CA: What are the new eligibility requirements for PHR/SPHR certification?
Virtual Recertification Counselor: The 2011 eligibility requirements are listed on our website under the HR Certification.
