Course Pre- Students must have studied Physics or Classical, Quantum Mechanics in B.Sc. level and in
requisites I sem in MSc.
Expected The students will be able to know the basic properties of nucleus and visualize the
Outcome characteristics, draw the structure of nucleus with its deformations, know about the nature
/Objectives of binding energy and separation energy of protons and neutrons, understand the theory of
Bethe Weizsacker's semi empirical mass formula, know the necessity of various nuclear
models in detail, interpret the two body problem, know the concepts behind nuclear
radiation detection and classify various detectors, advantages of nuclear accelerators and
nuclear instrumentation, to know the types of elementary particles, nuclear synthesis of
elements in stars.

isospin, parity of nuclear states, electric moments, magnetic dipole
moment, quadrupole moment.

3 Von Weizsacker’s mass formula, liquid drop model, single particle 6 3,5,10
shell model – its validity and limitations, Collective model,
Triaxiality, Nilsson model with Strutinsky shell corrections.
4 Radioactivity-Gamow’s theory, Fermi theory of beta decay, 6 8, 9,11,13
nuclear fission, atomic bomb, nuclear fusion, nuclear reaction in
stars, controlled thermo nuclear devices.
5 Fundamental interactions, classification of elementary particles, 5 18,19
Quantum numbers of different particles, Conservation laws,
Production of pions and their mass determination, Quark Gluon
model.
6 Helium burning, nuclear synthesis of elements in stars, Hydrogen 6 11,12
chain, carbon chain, emission and escape of neutrinos from the
core of stars, Chandrasekhar limit, evolution of neutron rich
matter and supernova explosion.
7 Interaction of charged particles and electromagnetic radiation with 10 14, 15, 16,
matter. Basic principles of particle detectors, Geiger-Muller 17, 20
counter, scintillation and semiconductor detectors.
