LESSON PLAN

Unit: Skills Date: Sept 27th/28th Standard: SHAPE # 1. 2. 4

Lesson Focus: Volleying and Striking Grade: Grades 2nd-4th Technology Used: Music player

Sequence: Day 2 of 3 Facility/Equipment: Paddles, wiffle balls, balloons, beach balls and foam balls

Lesson Intro (What will you say to get the students’ attention, communicate the lesson objectives, and motivate students to achieve them?): Last time you were
here we practiced the skill of volleying. We volleyed with different body parts. Today we will be focusing on the skill of striking. Someone raise their hand and tell
me what striking means. It is the act of hitting an object with force, using their hand or some other implement. Raise your hand and give me an example of striking
in sports and in everyday life. (Striking a soccer ball, swinging in baseball/softball, hitting in tennis, swatting flies, high fives) Today, each of you will have a
paddle along with an object that you will strike. We are going to practice our striking skills in various ways. It is important that you keep your eye on the ball so
you don’t wiff! Once you get your equipment, spread out and practice striking the ball with your paddle. Keep it up in the air and see how many times you can
strike it before it hits the ground. Boys, go get a paddle and a ball. Girls go get a paddle and a ball. Start exploring!

Learning Objectives Assessment

Each objective should include: a) Performance (the knowledge or ability the For each objective include your procedure for determining whether
learner will gain as a result of this lesson), b) Conditions (under which the objectives have been met:
learner will perform, and c) Criterion (the level of performance considered
acceptable):

Students can...

1. Strike an object at least 5 times without it hitting the floor 1. In-class observation - Checklist
2. Verbally express what the skill of striking is. 2. Randomized questioning of students
3. Respect others and play fairly in a competitive environment. 3. In class-observation
4. Move safely in general space while striking the object without running 4. In-class observation
into others.

Safety considerations and/or modifications for special needs students: Reiterate that students need to keep their paddles in their hands at all times. Demonstrate
how the paddles have a hard surface and can really hurt someone if they are not used appropriately. For special needs students lighter and larger balloons will be
given to strike at. If the paddle is too difficult to use, then just allow for the students to use their hands to strike the balloon with.

2. Turn around and strike the ball while looking back between your legs!
3. Giant circle and play 1 huge game of Straddle Ball with 3 different foam balls at
once.
Closure (What will you say and do to help students recall the lesson objectives and recognize what they’ve learned? How will you meet one or more of the
following goals: review, accountability, cool-down, recognition, interpersonal communication, future plans?): Someone raise your hand and tell me what striking
is! Give me an example of striking in a sport. Striking can be done with our body parts as well with other objects. Next time you all will be playing a game that
involves striking.

Reflective Comments (to be completed after the lesson): Next time, do not use the pickleball paddles. They were too difficult, too heavy. Take away the wiffle
balls as well. There is no need for them for it is too challenging. We did not even get to play straddle ball. Straddle ball can be used for a lesson of it’s own.
