KESTER CARRUTHERS who was Rector of North Stainley, West Tanfield, Well and Snape
from 1992 to 2000 died aged 83, on 24th September. Kester had previously been precentor of
Bradford Cathedral, and an Army Forces. Donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Society in
his memory if desired.

Kester’s funeral will take place at 11.45 a.m. on Tuesday 23rd October at Woking Crematorium
followed by a Service of Thanksgiving at St Mary of Bethany, Woking at 12.30 p.m. No

WE WELCOME the family and friends of Ophelia Fieldhouse; Ophelia is to be baptised in the
service at Masham today.
REFLECTION As we reflect on the awesome and disturbing words of Jesus in Mark’s gospel
we remind ourselves that Jesus pronounces all human greatness. He takes on the role of the
servant who gives himself for many. So it for us to accept the humility of Christ into our own
lives. We praise God for the the gifts of baptism and Eucharist that joins us to himself. And
we take this for ourselves as we share in baptism and drink the cup of the Eucharist. Our lives
are shaped by prayer and sacrifice as we seek to become more like Christ in ourselves, our
bodies and our souls.

Nick has been appointed as Priest-in-Charge of the Bramham Benefice in the Diocese of York.

NICK’S LAST SERVICE
Nick’s farewell service with us will be on Sunday 4 th November with a 10.45 a.m. Holy
Communion Service at St. Mary’s, North Stainley. This will be the only service in our group of
parishes on that day.
This will be followed by drinks and ‘nibbles’ in the Village Hall. If you are able to come and
stay for refreshments afterwards please bring a plate of ‘finger food’ with you. Wine and soft
drinks will be provided.
Nick will be licensed on Monday 26th November at 7.30 p.m. at St Mary's Church, High
Street, Boston Spa LS23 6DR
Parking is available in the Church Fields car park next to St Mary's.

POPPIES FOR NORTH STAINLEY?
Could you help us? Could you knit or crochet a few poppies??
Perhaps you have seen the amazing displays of knitted and crocheted poppies which are going
up around Ripon at the moment in preparation for the 100th Anniversary of the end of World
War 1 on 11th November.
Although we have left it a bit late, St Mary’s Church would like to do something similar in
North Stainley – we have plenty of railings etc which we could decorate!
There are lots of simple patterns available on the internet. We have been given some red wool,
but any shade of red is OK. A few balls of wool and patterns will be available in the back of the
church.
It would be great if you could help us!

HEBREWS 5: 1-10
Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on
their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and
wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice
for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this hon-
our, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one
who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’; as he says also in another
place, ‘You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to
the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent sub-
mission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having
been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having
been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
MARK 10: 35-45
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, ‘Teacher, we want
you to do for us whatever we ask of you.’ And he said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do
for you?’ And they said to him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in
your glory.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to
drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?’ They
replied, ‘We are able.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I drink you will drink; and with
the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my
left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.’
When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and
said to them, ‘You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers
lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but
whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be
first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life a ransom for many.’
