BAB I

PENDAHULUAN

MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) adalah dokumen yang dibuat khusus mengenai suatu bahan kimia tentang pengenalan umum, sifat-sifat
bahan, cara penanganan, penyimpanan, pemindahan dan pengelolaan limbah buangan bahan kimia tersebut. Berdasarkan isi dari MSDS maka dokumen
tersebut sebenarnya harus diketahui dan digunakan oleh para pelaksana yang terlibat dengan bahan kimia tersebut yakni produsen, pengangkut,
penyimpan, pengguna dan pembuang bahan kimia. Pengetahuan ini akan dapat mendukung terciptanya budaya kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja.
Ketersediaan MSDS di laboratorium di perguruan 3tinggi saat ini belum memasyarakat padahal ketersediaan MSDS cukup penting dan digunakan juga
sebagai salah satu kriteria laboratorium standar.
Saat ini masih banyak mahasiswa, teknisi laboratorium termasuk dosen yang belum mengenal MSDS, meskipun mereka rutin berkecimpung
dengan aktivitas yang melibatkan kontak dengan bahan kimia. Berdasarkan permasalahan di atas maka diperlukan penyebarluasan informasi tentang
MSDS khususnya pada mahasiswa dikaitkan dengan pelaksanaan riset dengan tugas akhir di laboratorium. Hal ini dapat dipahami karena bahan kimia
dapat memiliki tipe reaktivitas kimia tertentu dan juga dapat memiliki sifat mudah terbakar.
Untuk dapat mendukung jaminan kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja maka para pelaksana yang bekerja di laboratorium termasuk mahasiswa harus
mengetahui dan memiliki pengetahuan serta keterampilan untuk menangani bahan kimia khususnya dari segi potensi bahaya yang mungkin ditimbulkan
(Crisp, 1996). Informasi atau pengetahuan yang harus diketahui pelaksana di laboratorium kimia yang diberikan oleh Phifer dkk (1994) salah satunya
adalah informasi tentang Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
