VISUAL

JOURNALS
a beginner’s guide

Your visual journal is a place to practice generating creative and original thoughts. Your challenge
will be transform these conceptual ideas into visual form within a 2 page spread.

Every 2 weeks you will be given an abstract concept that is very broad - this is intentional. You
should consider every angle of what this word means, as well as what, specifically, it means to
YOU.

The goal is get away from predictable, trite, or cliché responses and to see a universal concept in a
new and novel way, often allowing your own life and experiences to help take a stance or make a
statement about your topic.

Throughout the year, we will be looking at lots of contemporary artists - artists living and working
today - that deal with similar topics. A brief explanation of contemporary art:

Today's artists work in and respond to a global environment that is culturally diverse, technologically
advancing, and multifaceted. Working in a wide range of mediums, contemporary artists often reflect and
comment on modern-day society. When engaging with contemporary art, viewers are challenged to set
aside questions such as, "Is a work of art good?" or "Is the work aesthetically pleasing?" Instead, viewers
consider whether art is "challenging" or "interesting."
