First Semester 2013-2014
COMPREHENSIVE EXAM (Closed/Open Book)
Course No: CE G 551
Course Name: Dynamics of Structures Date: 02/12/2013
Duration: 3 Hr. (2:00 to 5:00PM) Maximum Marks: 80

Instructions: Answer all the questions. Assume suitable data if necessary.

(CLOSED BOOK)
1. Define Natural period, resonance, damping and fundamental mode of vibration. [2M]
2. What are the different types of damping and write short note on it. [4M]
3. What is shear building and write the assumptions of shear building model. [4M]
4. Write a short note on logarithmic decrement. [5M]
5. A 50 kg mass is mounted on an isolator whose stiffness is 7kN/m. when the system is
subjected to a harmonic excitation of magnitude 300N and frequency of 45 rad/s. the phase
difference between the excitation and steady state response is 40O. Determine the damping
ratio and maximum deflection due to this excitation. [5M]

(OPEN BOOK)

1. The mass m, stiffness k and natural frequency ωn of an un damped SDF system are unknown.
These properties are to be determined by harmonic excitation tests. At an excitation frequency
of 4 Hz, the response tends to increase without bound (i.e. a resonant condition). Next, a
weight ∆w = 5 lb is attached to the mass m and the resonance test is repeated. This time
resonance occurs at f = 3Hz. Determine the mass and the stiffness of the system. [5M]

2. An SDF system with natural period Tn and damping ratio ζ is subjected to the periodic force
shown in below fig. 1 with an amplitude po and period T0. [10M]
(a) Expand the forcing function in its Fourier series.
(b) Determine the steady state response of a un damped system. For what values of T0 is the
solution indeterminate?

3. The properties of a three - storey shear building in which it is assumed that the entire mass is
lumped in the rigid girders are shown in Fig. 2. [15M]
(a) By solving the determinantal equation, evaluate the un damped vibration frequencies of
this structure.
(b) On the basis of the computed frequencies, evaluate the corresponding vibration mode
shapes, normalizing them to unity at the top story.
(c) Demonstrate numerically that the computed mode shapes satisfy the orthogonality
conditions with respect to mass and stiffness.

4. Consider a five-storey reinforced concrete office building shown in Fig. 3. The building is
located in Hyderabad. The soil conditions are hard and the entire building is supported on a
mat foundation. The R. C. frames are in filled with brick-masonry. The lumped weight due to
dead loads is 15kN/m2 on floors and 12 kN/m2 on the roof. The floors are to cater for a live
load of 5 kN/m2 on floors and 2 kN/m2 on the roof. Determine design seismic load using
dynamic analysis on the structure as per new code. [15M]

5. A chimney of height L has been idealized as a cantilever beam with mass per unit length
varying linearly from m at the base to m/2 at the top and with second moment of cross
sectional is varying linearly from I at the base to I/2 at the top (fig.3.). Estimate the first two
natural frequencies and modes of lateral vibration of the chimney using the shape functions

given by 1 cos 1 cos Where x is measured from the base.
[10M]
6. Determine the natural vibration frequencies and modes of a uniform beam clamped at both
ends (fig. 4), idealized as an assemblage of two finite elements using the consistant mass
matrix and lumped mass matrix. [5M]
