In this proportional reasoning activity, students will explore unit rate in the Click Battle
arena.

Activity Screens: Teacher Pacing and Pause Class


Use this page to plan your use of Teacher Pacing and Pause Class. Teacher Pacing lets you restrict
students to a single screen or a range of screens. Pause Class keeps students from interacting with
whatever screens they are currently viewing. Use these two tools to create conversations in your
classroom.
Consider these questions as you plan:

Which screen(s) should everyone work on at the same time? Why?

Which screen(s) do you want to keep students from seeing until you're ready for the class to see
them together? (Perhaps because they reveal answers or require a whole class conversation for
introduction.)

Are there any points in the lesson where you will want to make sure students aren’t playing with

are reasonable estimates? Explain."

Highlight unique answers for the class. Ask students to justify their
responses and critique each others' reasoning.

Consider asking students whether they changed their estimate, and if


so, why.

Sample Answer: I clicked 24 times during the 3-second practice


round, which means I make about 8 clicks per second. At first, I
thought this would mean about 80 clicks in 10 seconds, but I think I'll
slow down toward the end from click fatigue. So my final guess: 75
clicks in 10 seconds.

Use teacher pacing on Screens 5-7. Give students a minute or two to


complete each screen.

After students complete Screens 5-7, highlight several student


responses for the class from any of these screens. Start with informal
math language and reasoning, then move to more formal responses.
In particular, watch for students who reference unit rate.

Also, emphasize the range of student responses on these screens, if


it exists. It's okay—even desirable—to have a mix of responses here.
The activity will build toward consensus and precision starting on
Screen 8.

Chloe disagrees. She says it's 0.5 clicks per second.

Who is correct?

Teacher Tips:

Highlight some of the best arguments for each side. Ask students to
respond with counterarguments.

Sample Answer: Amir is correct. Since the bot made 8 clicks in 4


seconds, that's a rate of 2 clicks per 1 second.

Note: Watch for students who simply divide the first number by the
second number, or the larger number by the smaller number. This
oversimplified approach will lead to incorrect conclusions on this and
several other screens.

Use the teacher dashboard to monitor student progress, and to look


 for common sorting strategies. The dashboard may also help you pair
students together for conversations about how they sorted the cards.

Make sure you complete this card sort yourself, in the role of a
student, to acquaint yourself with the cards, questions, and
conceptions that may arise in class.

After students complete the card sort, ask them to describe their
approach. Watch for students who incorrectly place the blue bot in 1st
place, as some may incorrectly interpret the blue bot's unit rate as 10
clicks per second.

Also watch for students who do not use unit rate. There are several
interesting approaches for comparing bots. For example, if the red bot
clicked for nine half-seconds (4.5 seconds), it would have 4 · 9 = 36
clicks, which is fewer than the green bot. Similar pairwise
comparisons can reveal the rest of the positions.

Teacher Tips:

This is a great place to check student progress. Offer individual


support where needed, or lead a brief whole-class discussion if
enough students are struggling.

As students finish this screen, encourage them to check their answers


with a classmate, discuss any discrepancies, and aim for consensus.
