PROPOSAL FOR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING AND DESIGN (SABD)
COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE (CSI)
MARCH 2018 SEMESTER

Introduction
Community Service Initiative module (CSI) is a compulsory MPU4 subject, in which students are required
to pass in order to graduate. In School of Architecture, Building and Design, CSI will continue the
traditional teaching and learning method in Architectures, that is learning by integrating theories with
design practice. Students are required to incorporate the theory they have learned at school into real life
environment and problems. The intention is to reveal the students to the real community and work
together as a team for architectural, culture and environmental enhancing activities in the communities
of different social economic status and social groups.
Project Details
The community-based services in CSI module for SABD are to expose students to the real community living
in the real life situation. The students are to work together as a team for architectural, culture and
environmental enhancing activities in the communities of different socio-economic status and social
groups. The series of community services are offered under four (4) categories/themes and as student
empowerment projects they are given the freedom to choose and to execute the project In the best
possible manner (tern and condition applied and must within the constraint of the project requirements).
The details of the categories is as described in the following table. Students in a group of maximum 8 can
choose to participate in any of the following categories.

Beneficiaries Description / Suggested Activities


Charitable Homes or Organization (CH), Organizations, which survive through public donation,
examples :- are usually in very poor stages. Students are to use their

 Animal Shelter
 Center for Disabled and any other
similar center

Community Center (CC), examples :- A number of community center are left with no
 Local Community Center community activities; and some are even totally
 Orang Asli Community Center abandoned. Students are to use their knowledge in
 Surau / Mosque architectural space design to restore or reactivate the
space.
Street Community (SS), examples :- Student will be looking at the possibility of enhancing
 Dormant Space in a community urban community experiences. Propose solution to
 Street/Space with high criminal address street problems such as high criminal rate, lost
rate culture and values, dormant or etc.
DiverseCity Project Details to be announced on 28th March, 1-2pm, venue to
be confirmed.

Whichever category, students are required to

1. Conduct need analysis to identify and evaluate the needs in a community. The identification of
needs is a process of describing the “problems” of a target population and possible solutions to
these problems.
2. Propose a potential solution that is within then means of student knowledge, capacity and
capabilities. Prototype will be optional.
3. Using spatial design, students are to achieve the purpose in each category.
4. Student are required to conduct a satisfaction survey from the beneficiary for future or further
improvement.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Develop relevant communication skills for collaborative work with community/society and/or to
work in a career that will make contribution to society.
2. Develop a holistic awareness of the variety of problems (e.g. the environment, poverty, social
discrimination) that call for action; critically analyze how such problems should be approached
and how to solve them scientifically.
3. Apply information management skills and strengthen their lifelong academic learning.
4. Develop in themselves a strong sense of social responsibility and be able to portray leadership
qualities and being able to work effectively as a team.

Assessment Components
1. INDIVIDUAL E-JOURNAL (30%)
- Each student will be required to keep a personal journal that records their journey throughout
this module. (their observation / individual contribution / reflection)
- Students are free to use images, videos or even charts to enhance their journal.

2. ACTIVITY/PROJECT (50%)
- Projects will involve at least 30 hours of social engagement activities and other related work.
- All activities, i.e. survey, site visit, interview, prototype construction and etc shall be recorded and
compiled

3. GROUP ORAL PRESENTATION (20%)


- Students will be required to form groups and each group will present their experiences collectively.
- Final presentation shall be in form of video.

Assessment criteria of the proposal


1. Architectural Values
- Students’ proposal has to be architecture related. Non-architectural related charity activity such
as organizing a drawing competition for orphanage, cleaning dog shelter or distribute food to
homeless people will receive minimum grade.

2. Sustainability / self-sustaining
- The design should be sustainable for a long period (>6 months). It shall not be a one time off
activity nor it will deteriorate when there is no caretaker.

3. Community Engagement / User satisfaction survey / interview


- Students are required to conduct a need analysis to investigate the community’s need. They are
to return to the site for satisfaction survey once their proposal have been finalized to analyse if
their proposal suits the local community’s need.

Proposed Budget
The following is the proposed budget for the Community Service Initiative for the March 2018
semester:

Each group project development expenses = RM80/pax X no. of members

Claim procedure:
Put all the original receipts in an A4 envelope, on the envelope, write the proposal name, all
group members name and contact of 2 members. Submit to Ms. Ann by hand lastest by 6th June
2018. The claim shall be ready by early next semester.
