Information Technology governance addresses the authority and control for key
Information Technology activities in organizations, including IT infrastructure, IT use, and
project management. All three IT projects suffered from poor IT governance.
The Sydney Water’s customer relationship management system was a project
proposed to modernized and consolidate the company’s customer relationship system.
The project is delayed by 18 months and exceeds its original budget by more than 100%.
This was because of lack of IT governance and project management.
The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s academic management project
aimed of integrating all RMIT’s student management activities into a consolidated system
to streamline processes. The system was made but it did not provide the functionality that
the school originally planned but they still used it. The main problem that the school faced
in having this project was the management. They did not plan for, and apply appropriate
contract management practises. They did not establish the required governance
arrangement, including senior management involvement or support to ensure the
implementation of the project was effectively managed.
One Tel’s billing system was one of the first system that they developed. According
to my research, the system is made as a short-term solution for the company’s problem.
They still used it, unchanged. The system lacked flexibility. It did not conform to the
complexity of the operation of the company. They prolong the use of supposedly short-
term system. Another problem was that the system failed the most basic financial integrity
checks. There were no checks at each stage of value loaded, value billed, or value
posted. And as billing system, if it does not perform the basic function, the how would
you rely on it.
The problems stated above fall on the poor management of the companies,
especially on IT governance as the projects mentioned was IT projects. With the poor
management, they did not monitor either the progress of the projects or the alignment
and impact of the new systems on their business. The related matters such as financial,
auditing, and contract management was affected to the governance of the projects.
These IT projects overestimated of what can be done and underestimated of the long-
term consequences.
