APPENDIX-A

BRIEF REVIEW OF R&D PLAN INCLUDING PERTINENT LITERATURE AND SPECIFIC AIMS

CASDE has carried out its various activities over the last 5 years through three key elements,
called Centre Element, Project Elements and Awareness Creation Element.

Centre is a centralized infrastructure in the form of office equipment, communications facilities,

library facilities, manpower etc. It has the ability to coordinate visitors for increased interaction and
it also provides support to (1) creation of short-term courses and their deliveries, (2) brainstorming
sessions, (3) workshops and conferences, etc. Centre Element has acted as a common platform
and a binding agent to bring together CASDE core faculty, other associated faculty from other
engineering departments from within IITB and wide ranging institutions outside of IITB.

Project Elements are the various CASDE activities that were configured through a well-conceived
process. All activities are within the overall objectives of CASDE as spelt out in the proposal dated
1998. Process of starting a Project Element is initiated by a discussion between core & associate
faculty of CASDE and also with Management Committee (MC) members. If substantial resources
are required for the activity, a brainstorming session is organized with participation of major DRDO
laboratories, ARDB representatives and SPC/JPC members. The activity is then reported to
JPC/SPC meetings and after their approval an internal allocation is made for the activity.

Awareness Creation Element consists of Short term Courses, Workshops and Discussion
Meetings that CASDE has been organizing on a regular basis. During Phase-I, CASDE organized
more than 15 awareness creation events, for the benefit of DRDO and other agencies, which were
well received. All these events were sponsored by CASDE, through funding received from ARDB.

The main aim of CASDE in Phase-II is to consolidate gains made from Phase-I. This task would
involve taking current activities to their logical conclusion, initiating new research areas, increasing
its reach within the country and achieving a reasonable global recognition. It is believed that all the
above three key elements are considered essential also in Phase-II, for achieving these aims.
However, while during Phase-I, all these elements were fully supported by the funding received
from ARDB, during phase-II it is planned to also involve other external agencies e.g. DRDO
Laboratories and user organizations, for partially supporting the above three key elements.
Specifically, Phase-II aims to (1) offer revised Systems Design & Engineering (SDE) specialization,
(2) build core competencies in the areas of systems design and systems engineering with ARDB
funding, (3) participate in focused projects with other agencies to help them to incorporate new
techniques to solve their future problems, (4) conduct regular brainstorming sessions to identify
new and emerging areas and (5) create awareness about new technologies in SDE, through
seminars, workshops, conferences, short term courses etc.

4
APPENDIX-B

IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

CASDE, since its inception in August 1998, has been at the forefront of all activities that promote
systems thinking and Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization (MDO), which is an integral aspect of
systems engineering practice in the development of large aerospace systems. Further, the
infrastructure, created as a part of its overall objectives, is unique in the country and the education
and training that is imparted by CASDE aims to propagate a systems engineering approach to
design of large multidisciplinary aerospace systems. In addition, CASDE has worked out projects
for the systems engineering students in such a manner that they are a part of a real-life project
within or outside their parent organizations and the results of their investigations are directly
usable by the agencies in their specific development process.

CASDE has taken upon itself to popularize the art of design at a level where it matters most; i.e.
students. This has been achieved through many innovations such as design, build and fly,
simulation, student innovation laboratory etc., wherein basic skills for conceptualizing aerospace
vehicles and understanding the intricacies of the design process, are developed. In addition,
CASDE has been emphasizing system integration as a major developmental challenge and has
undertaken the development of autonomous Mini Aerial Vehicle (MAV). CASDE has also initiated
activities that pertain to Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) of Aerospace systems,
brining together organizations e.g. ADE, ADA, VSSC, DRDL, G-FAST etc. into this important
system design activity.

Also, CASDE has been creating awareness about various systems design and systems
engineering practices, through a number of activities e.g. seminars, workshops, short terms
course, CEPs, brainstorming sessions etc., which not only help in disseminating information to
various organizations but also provide important national & international platforms as well as
channels of communication among the various participating agencies. An important feature of
these interactions has been the discussions of various case studies that have arisen in many
organizations, during the development process, which have led to better understanding of complex
issues relating to the design process for complex aerospace systems.

All in all CASDE, in Phase-I, has joined hands with all aerospace organizations to aim to change
the way in which a large aerospace system design process is perceived and pursued. The
proposed work of CASDE in Phase-II is the logical next step in the direction of making systems
design and systems engineering practices, well accepted by the aerospace industry.

5
APPENDIX-C

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

It was mentioned earlier that in Phase-I, CASDE has functioned through three key elements,
called Centre Element, Project Elements and Awareness Creation Element. Each of these
three elements has a well-defined role to play and following sub-sections describe them in detail;
(1) what is proposed to be done under these elements and (2) how is it proposed to be achieved.

During Phase-II, CASDE plans to define the scope of Centre Element as follows.
 Support to educational programme in Systems Design and Engineering (Students)
 Support to preparation of various course modules (Projection Material, CDs)
 Support for holding various meetings (SIG-MDO/Workshops/Reviews etc.)
 Support for coordinating visitors to CASDE, seminars, invited talks etc.
 Maintenance and upgrade of office infrastructure, including library (Procurement)
 Procurement & maintenance of software tools for Systems Engineering teaching aids

SDE curriculum has been revised in July 2003 (see Annexure-I), with inclusion of two new courses
on “Applied Mechatronics” and “Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization”.

During Phase-I, a large number of activities were taken up under the Project Element, which (1)
had a generic content, leading to building core competence and (2) had an application oriented
content, which was found to be of great interest to DRDO laboratories & aerospace industry.
Therefore, during Phase-II, it is proposed to bifurcate the above two activities into two separate
elements, in order to give a boost to building up of core competencies by CASDE. It is believed
that focused studies should be tailored to the specific long-term needs of DRDO laboratories &
other work centres/user agencies. The scope of Generic Activities in Phase-II, is defined as,
 Surrogate Modelling
o Response Surface Methods, Design of Experiments, Design and Analysis of Computer
Experiments, Neural Network Surrogates etc.
 CFD/FEM in optimization loop
o Tackle basic computational/ software issues in optimization using CFD/FEM analysis
 Sensitivity analysis, including ADIFOR
 Methodology development for system design of a miniature aircraft
o Mission Design, Requirements Capture, Trade-off Studies etc.
 Algorithms for autonomous navigation for Mini Aerial Vehicles
o Minimum Energy Paths, Minimum Time Paths, Robustness of Algorithms etc.
 Algorithmic & computational issues related to problem formulation in MDO
 New Methodologies
o Robust Design, Design for Uncertainties etc.

6
The above list of generic activities is based on the current needs as well as existing expertise of
CASDE core and associate faculty. The above list will be reviewed on a regular basis and updated
as and when the current activities reach their logical conclusion and new/emerging research areas
are identified through brainstorming sessions. With regard to the application oriented focused
studies, CASDE will seek support from DRDO laboratories and other interested user agencies.
CASDE will only provide the infrastructural support to these focused application oriented activities
and will periodically report these to the Joint Policy Committee of CASDE for information.

During Phase-II, it is proposed to conduct only the brainstorming sessions as part of Awareness
Creation Element. Short Term Courses and workshops will be self-supporting and will have the
following format.
o All events will be held at IIT Bombay during fixed slots.
o Events will be announced on CASDE web page and also through announcements
to various organizations.
o Each event would cost from Rs. 0.6 to 0.75 Lakhs per day and cater to a maximum
of 20 participants. (Cost would be same even for lesser number of participants)
o Cost of an event would be recovered either from participants or from organizations
sponsoring them.
o On-site conduct of these events would be possible, subject to availability of course
faculty and additional allocation towards TA/DA for the faculty.

At this time, following short Term Courses have been finalized, though more would be added later.
 CEP-1: “Optimization in Engineering Design”, 2-day course. Next delivery of course
planned during August-September 2004. (Course Cost: Rs. 1.0 to 1.5 Lakhs). An extra day
of tutorial session on need basis.
 CEP-2: “Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization”, 2-Day Course. Next delivery of course
planned during April 2004. (Course Cost: Rs. 1.0 to 1.5 Lakhs). An extra day for case
studies from within IITB and from open literature, on need basis.
 CEP-3: “Integrated Product & Process Development”, 5-day course. Next delivery of
course planned during October 2004. (Course Cost: Rs. 2.5 to 3 Lakhs)

Finally, the biennial events International Conference on Modelling Simulation and Optimization for
Design of Multidisciplinary Engineering Systems (MSO-DMES) and National Conference in MSO-
DMES are the events of Aeronautical Society of India and CASDE would play a supporting role in
organizing these events, without any financial commitment from CASDE.

APPENDIX-E

PREVIOUS WORK DONE IN THIS OR RELATED AREA

The Centre for Aerospace Systems Design & Engineering (CASDE) was setup within the
Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Bombay in the year 1998. The Centre was fully
funded by ARDB and was aimed at creating a centre for excellence in Systems Design &
Engineering. It should be noted that CASDE came into existence at a time when Design as a
discipline in universities was at its lowest ebb. Design content in curriculum of most aerospace
educational institutions had substantially reduced by 1990s. No educational institution had faculty
engaged in research in design methodologies. IIT Bombay knew that the task of setting up a
centre like CASDE was complex. But substantial hand holding by DRDO laboratories and careful
nurturing by all has turned this experiment into a notable success. Broad objectives of CASDE in
Phase-I were; (a) To initiate educational programme in Systems Design & Engineering, (b) To set
up Integrated Modelling & Simulation Laboratory & (c) To carry out specific system level studies.
Table 1 below shows a summary of the various activities taken up by CASDE during the past 5
years.

Table 1 Objectives & Accomplishments of CASDE in Phase-I

Following sub-sections provide details of each of the above five objectives of CASDE in Phase-I.

9
Educational Programme An M. Tech. specialization in Systems Engineering was started at
Aerospace Engineering Department in 2001 and two batches of students from aerospace industry
have already gone through it. The programme was revised to Systems Design & Engineering, with
suitable changes to its syllabus as well as course contents and has been implemented from July
2003. The new curriculum has introduced two new courses on MDO and Applied Mechatronics,
providing important background and training in system synthesis and hardware integration. The
projects that past students have undertaken have resulted in following activities.

Test Facilities CASDE has also created a set of test facilities that aid the faculty and students in
carrying out high quality developmental work in the area of systems design and integration, for
Mini Aerial Vehicle (MAV) related activities undertaken by CASDE. Some of these facilities are
shown in figures below.

System Level Studies CASDE, in its first phase, has undertaken a number of system level
studies, addressing the issues of design, optimization and concept evaluation. Specifically, an
activity termed Design, Build & Fly, has been initiated as a means of developing newer flight
vehicle concepts, advanced missions, system integration methodologies etc. Following figures
highlight some of the studies carried out in this category.

Figure 19 Solar Powered Mini Aircraft Figure 20 Miniature Videography Platform

13
In addition, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) was identified as an important core
activity of CASDE in Phase I, in the broad area of system design, with main objectives as; (i) to act
as a repository of information on MDO and create/increase awareness about MDO amongst the
industry; (ii) be a work centre for optimization and software aspects of MDO and (iii) study issues
of integrating conceptual design with some aspects of preliminary design by bringing in higher
levels of analysis fidelity along with formal optimization at the early design phase. In tune with
these aims, MDO literature has been collected; a special interest group in MDO has been created
and a number of workshops have been organized; a library of software tools for optimization has
been established and a number of design optimization studies of aerospace interest have been
carried out through student projects, along with development of a software framework for MDO.
Some typical examples are as given below.

Awareness Creation & Publications In view of the fact that awareness creation was an
important aspect of CASDE functioning during Phase-I, a large number of workshops/ seminars/
Short-term courses etc. have been conducted. In addition, CASDE has organized a large number
of brainstorming sessions, with active participation from scientists and researchers interested in
the topic, in order to (1) sharpen focus on what needs to be done and (2) work out methodologies
for achieving the objections. These brainstorming sessions have proved fairly effective in
designing focused activities of CASDE. Many publications have also come out of the various
activities, which have been presented at various fora, highlighting the activities described above.
Lastly, CASDE has also attracted a large number of distinguished visitors and in the same light
CASDE faculty and staff have been invited to give special lectures in various organizations. A
consolidated list of all these activities is given in Annexure-I.

(For more details on the various activities of CASDE during Phase-I, kindly visit the website
http://www.casde.iitb.ac.in ).
