Welcome to Aldersgate Church!
We’re glad you’ve found our church! We hope you’ll find us to be an
encouraging, friendly group of people. While we don’t make any claims
to be perfect, at our church we come together to help make the
kingdom of God a reality on earth by loving God and loving our neighbor.
Branding Survey
Your Help is Critical!
Church Council is excited to announce that Aldersgate Church will be
working with Mary Beth Bowen and Sarah Scott from Hive Creative Group
on creating a clearer and more effective brand for Aldersgate Church. This
effort will help us to have more concise communications within the
church and more effectively share our story with the community. With
your help, we will be examining our mission statement, values, key
principals, and more!
Input from the entire Aldersgate family, including membership and
regular attendees, is critical to this project. Everyone is invited to
participate, and we encourage each member of your household to
complete a survey. Hive Creative Group has prepared both online and
hard copy surveys for your convenience. The link to the online survey will
be available on the Aldersgate Church website www.cvaumc.org/
branding. The hard copy survey will be available to pick up starting
Sunday, November 18th after the 9:00 and 11:00 AM services. Surveys will
be received through Sunday, December 9th . We invite and encourage
you to participate by filling out a survey. If you should need assistance or

For Our Youngest Friends
and Their Parents
A professionally staffed nursery is available for children birth through
age three during all services and Sunday School on the lower level. An
usher will be happy to direct you. Additionally, a Parent Room is
available in the Parlor adjacent to the Sanctuary, for viewing and hearing
all services. Please ask an usher to show you the way. All restrooms are
equipped with changing tables.
Sunday Children's Worship
During 9am and 11am Services

Calling all children! Children 3 years old through 5 grade are invited to
come and be a part of our Children's Worship time downstairs following
the Children's Message. There they will have opportunities to encounter
God through scripture, music, prayers, and other meaningful and fun
ways. Elementary-age children will return to the sanctuary and gather
with the congregation for the benediction each week. At 9:00am, Pre-
Schoolers move to their 10:10am Sunday School room. If you have any

Children's Small Group
Sunday School, a time of bible discovery with friends, invites all children
to come and learn at 10:10am. Lynn Bremer leads the elementary class
(Room 106) and Sherry Bryant leads our all new Preschool/Kindergarten
class (Room 110). Classrooms are found in the Education Wing on the
ground floor level.
First Fridays
First Fridays begins January 4. Please join us for this Intergenerational
time of gathering around the table for a simple supper, devotion, and
New Year’s discovery and activities. Fun for the whole family! (Sign up

Staff Openings
at Aldersgate Church
Church Administrator Needed -
On behalf of Aldersgate’s Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), we
have shared that our church administrator, Amy O’Brien, was offered
an opportunity for a career change. Amy felt led by God to accept that
opportunity, and her last day was Friday, October 5, 2018. We deeply
appreciated Amy’s service to our church for the past 11 years; and as
she left us, we sent our prayers, gratitude, love, and good wishes with
her and her daughter, Erin. If you are interested or know someone that
may be interested in learning more about the position, please contact

Kitchen Coordinator Needed -
Elizabeth Peterson has served as our Kitchen Coordinator for the past
three years and her time as coordinator ended September 30,
2018. Her time, energy and dedication to the position is appreciated
and we thank her for all she has done!

Young Adults/Sunday Morning
Small Group:
New Study Beginning Soon!
Join us for a time of fellowship and study this holiday season! The group
will be exploring Christmas through the eyes of Joseph, a man who
found himself in circumstances that he never would have chosen for
himself. How do we, like Joseph, find the courage to keep pressing on,
even when we find ourselves in unpleasant circumstances? How do we
see God as a sustainer in the middle of our messy lives? We will discuss
these questions and more, using Adam Hamilton’s Faithful as our guide.
The group meets in the Hospitality Room (downstairs) on Sundays from
10:10-10:50am and all materials are provided. Come as you are!
Sisters in Scripture
The Sisters in Scripture Sunday School Class (Room 211) has a small
group DVD bible study, Twelve Women of the Bible. Lysa TerKuerst, Elisa
Morgan, Jeanne Stevens and other leaders
look at the spiritual lessons learned from
twelve biblical women and what they
mean for your life today. All ladies are
invited to join us each Sunday morning,

Vacation Notice
The Lead Pastor and Youth Coordinator will be on vacation from
November 19-29. Associate Pastor Julie Nitzsche is available for
pastoral assistance.
Save the Date! Parent's Night Out
Parent’s Night Out is a ministry opportunity for young parents to have a
time apart for soul care. Parents may register their children (sign up link
http://www.cvaumc.org/parents-night-out/) for December 7th from
5:00-8:00 pm. Children will spend a fun and festive evening enjoying
dinner, a movie, and various creative stations such as drama, STEM, art,

Joyful Noise Singers
Children (grades 1-6) are invited to gather in the Sanctuary from 12:15-
12:30am (by the organ after 11:00am service) with Rafael. This will be a
time for the children to learn more about music and rehearse for
upcoming opportunities to sing in worship as they glorify God. Contact

Children's Ministry is growing!!
Help is needed to fulfill our calling in the lives of our children. Adult
“helpers” are needed during the 9:00am Children's Worship time and
during the 10:00am Children's Sunday School time, usually just once a

SAVE THE DATE: Children’s Nativity
You're invited to come and enjoy our Children's Nativity, "ON THE ROAD
TO BETHLEHEM", Saturday, December 15th at 5:00 pm at Aldersgate
United Methodist Church. This is a free event, all are invited! Join us for
this fun evening featuring all of our worship musical groups, children and
youth ages 4-14 sharing God's story. You'll be invited to sing along with
favorite carols, hear the familiar story and we'll end the festivities with a
home cooked dinner! Bring the whole family as we celebrate the birth of
our Lord and Savior together! Please get your free tickets from Maryann
Thornton in the Reed Room beginning December 2.
Children's Nativity Cast Information
The Children's Nativity is December 15 at 5:00pm. There is still room for
younger children (ages 4 through 2nd grade) to join the cast and attend 1
practice (December 12 or 14). If you would like for your child to
participate, please contact Pastor Julie no later than TODAY.

Youth Sunday School - Every Sunday, Youth Sunday School meets in the
Youth Room (107) from 10:10–10:50am. This is open to all 6th - 12th

will be held at Westview on the James February 23-24, 2019.
This retreat will be filled with fun, fellowship, and good food along the
way as we join in a wonderful weekend together. Still not sure if you

Retreat Weekends.

A Time for All Generations to Connect
Advent Season Begins
Saturday, December 1
Children's Ministry is hosting Pancakes and Pajamas from 8:30 -
9:30am on December 1 in the Fellowship Hall. Participants can come
dressed in festive pajamas and enjoy making their very own pancakes,
complete with the toppings. Each participant will then have an
opportunity to make a Christmas Tree ornament that will be used for
our tree in the Reed Room and a take home activity for the whole
family.
Hospitality Committee will begin preparing the Reed Room @ 9:00am
on December 1 for our Advent season. If you would like to help set
tables and make this space ready, please contact Jennifer Hamlin at
panachejennifer@gmail.com. The Advent Brunch will be held on
Sunday, Dec. 2 @ 10:00am between services and is a pot luck
celebration of food, faith and fellowship. Come and Enjoy!
Altar Guild is hosting the Hanging of the Greens, a traditional means of
preparing the Sanctuary for the season of Advent. Beginning at 9:00am
December 1, we'll decorate Sanctuary Chrismon Trees, hang wreaths,
prepare the Christmas Tree in the Welcome Center Please contact

Wednesday, November 28 at 10:00 am -- A few good men are needed
to help set up the artificial Christmas trees in the Sanctuary, Reed
Room and Welcome Center.
Poinsettias and Mission Kits
Starting next week, we will have order forms for
poinsettias and mission kits. You will be able to
donate a poinsettia or mission kit in honor or
memory of a loved one, or to the glory of God.
Poinsettias may be taken home after the 7:30pm
December 24 worship service. Cost is $12 each.

Stephen Ministry Youth Calendar Update
AUMC has been a Stephen ministry for 15 years. Our Stephen Ministers November 18, 2018
have been a blessing to individuals, to the lay ministers themselves, and High School Youth Group 5:00 PM
to the whole congregation. To continue and expand the ministry of care, Youth Group Dinner for High School and Middle School 6:15 PM
we will begin another Stephen ministry training class to start in early Middle School Youth Group 6:45 PM
2019. Take advantage of this opportunity to share the love that God has November 25, 2018
given you. You will find that being a Stephen minister will not only be High School Youth Group 5:00 PM
helpful to others, but it will be one of the most fulfilling and joyful Youth Group Dinner for High School and Middle School 6:15 PM

Aldersgate Church is Seeking a Director for
the Aldersgate Youth Praise Band
The Aldersgate Youth Praise Band ministry is seeking an adult
Christian to support and direct youth volunteers in expressing
a contagious love of Jesus through music and worship. The
director will assist the band in rehearsals and in preparations
for leading worship at Aldersgate Church. The Youth Praise Band leads
music during worship periodically throughout the year. If you would like

Blue Ridge Food Bank Needs Donations!
As you prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this year with family and
friends, please remember those less fortunate than we are and
contribute food items to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Food that is
needed includes:
Canned Items: Beef Stew, Ravioli, Spaghetti, Vegetables, Fruit, 100%
Juice, Soups, Chicken or Tuna (most needed)
Boxed: Rice 1 lb. (or bag); Macaroni & Cheese, Pasta & Pasta Sauce,
Breakfast Cereals/Oatmeal/Grits
Other: Coffee/Tea/Jam/Jelly, Peanut Butter (most needed)
NOTE: Please check expiration dates. NO GLASS JARS and NO jumbo size
containers, please. Food Collection Bins will be placed in the Welcome
Center and outside the Reed Room. Food will be collected through
November 30.
United Methodist Student Day
It’s that time of year again when we lift up Methodist students in their
educational journey. TODAY and November 25, we will have a special
collection for the United Methodist Student Day. The purpose of this
day is to support United Methodists students ss they prepare for life by
adding knowledge to their faith. The funds received from the offering go
into the United Methodist Student Loan Fund to underwrite
scholarships for United Methodist students.
USHERS NEEDED!
The church needs your help. A great service opportunity at Aldersgate
Church is being an usher. We need ushers for every week of the month
for the 11:00am service time except the 3rd week of each month. If you
are interested in exploring this opportunity to serve periodically on

“Caring for One Another”
Our Prayer Ministry
Aldersgate United Methodist Church believes deeply in the power of
prayer. For that reason, the email prayer ministry, “Caring for One
Another,” was formed a few years ago. We send out email requests that
are submitted daily and ask that you include these people in your
prayers. If you would like to be included in this ministry, please email
Jeanne Hamlin at jeaham@comcast.net or call her at 434-973-9889. We
always welcome more participants. If you have a prayer request that
you would like included, please send that to her also.
Volunteers for Sunday Night
Youth Dinner
Our Youth Group for 2018-2019 is in full swing and each Sunday night,
the Middle School and High School youth join for a time of fellowship
over a meal from 6:15pm-6:45pm. Youth Group is seeking adult
volunteers, Sunday School Classes or other adult small groups in the
church who would be willing to volunteer to assist with our Sunday
Night Youth Group Dinner. We would ask that the night you volunteer,
you would help prepare or pick up our meal, set up food for buffet style
serving, join us for dinner and fellowship and help us with cleaning
up. Please see the available dates in the Reed Room (meal stipend
monies are available to support this ministry). For more information,
