Vegetarianism In this first extract from their conversation, Freddy and Lily discuss why Lily became a vegetarian. Note some arguments for and against becoming a vegetarian. Then listen to the recording and compare what you have written with what Lily and Freddy say. Why would you expect someone to become a vegetarian? Is it easy to live a vegetarian life where you live? Listen to the recording and compare your thoughts with those of Freddy and Lily. Freddy is a highly proficient cook Clear usage: adjectives and adverbs Freddy talks about ‘cheap’ food (cheap = an adjective) We can eat cheaply if we eat plenty of vegetables (cheaply = an adverb) ‘This is standard use and most speakers in this book use these standard forms of adjectives and adverbs. Note however that increasing numbers of speakers do not use standard adverbial forms. You will sometimes hear, for example: We can eat cheap i He played well (standard) - He played good (non-standard) He spoke English badly (standard) ~ He spoke English bad (non-standard) He walked slowly (standard) ~ He walked slow (non-standard) © _Note the interaction between the two speakers and how they interject whilst the other is speaking.
