Subject: Organizational Behaviour Course: MBA(OG) 2017-19

Duration: July 2017– December-2017 Subject code: MBCH 731

A. ABOUT THE COURSE:


People have always been regarded as important in managing organizations. Human aspects are critical
in each functional aspects of management and equally so for the effective utilization of resources. In
view of this, organizational behaviour has assumed great importance. This course is designed
primarily for students who are being exposed to human resource management for the first time.
This course covers the explanations about the human behavior in the organizational context. It details
the impact of individual, group and organizational factors on human behavior.

B. OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of the course is to help students, develop cognizance of the importance of human
behaviour in framing human resource policies. The student would be able to describe how
people behave under different conditions and understand why people behave as they do. Based
on this understanding they would be able to predict and control human behaviour and improve
results.

On completion of the course the students will be able to:
a. Describe the major theories, concepts, and research findings in the fields of organizational
behavior.
b. Demonstrate a clear understanding of human behaviour in organizational context.
c. Demonstrate effective application of OB knowledge to diagnose and solve organizational
problems and develop optimal managerial decisions.
d. Analyze the complexities associated with management of human resources in the organizations.
e. Integrate knowledge of organizational behaviour with domain perspective.

C. COURSE OUTLINE

It has 4 modules which are as follows:


MODULE I: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR
 Meaning, Fundamental concepts, Characteristics & limitations of OB, Hawthorne Experiment,
Models of OB, Challenges & Opportunities of OB.
MODULE II: FOUNDATION OF INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOUR
 Personality and personal effectiveness: Personality – Concept, influence of personality on
behavior, Big five model, MBTI, Johari Window, factors affecting individual behaviour.
 Perceptions and Attributions: Process, factors affecting perception, attribution, perceptual and
attribution errors, managing perceptions.
 Learning in Organizations: Classical and operant conditioning, social learning, Behaviour
modification.
 Work Place Emotions and Attitudes: Emotions in the work place, emotional intelligence, Job
satisfaction, organizational commitment, Psychological contract.
 Motivation in the Workplace: Concept, Needs drives and employee motivation, Content and
process perspectives of motivation.
MODULE III: FOUNDATION OF GROUP BEHAVIOUR
 Groups and Teams: Foundations of group behavior, group dynamics, Managing and developing
effective teams.
 Conflict Management in the Work Place: Conflict management and resolution at work place,
 Leadership: Concept, Perspectives, Leadership development.
MODULE IV: UNDERSTANDING ORGANIZATIONAL PROCESSES
 Organizational Culture: Elements and dimensions of organizational culture, Importance of
organizational culture in shaping the behavior of people.
 Organizational Change: Understanding the issues and managing change, Approaches to
organizational change.
D. PEDAGOGY
Interactive approach during the study. (Students are advised to prepare the topic as
per the schedule (Mentioned below) for discussion in the class in advance)

E. COURSE COMPLETION PLAN

Internal Assessment: Marks 100 (shall be done based on the following 5 components):

a) Case studies: Each student will have to participate in the case study discussion. The
case studies are mentioned in the course plan. Students are required to read the case
study before attending the class and the group will have to submit the written analysis
of the case as per the following guidelines. For details kindly refer section L (30%
weightage)

The basic structure should be as follows:


a. A cover page with your name, the case name, the date, the course name and
number
b. 4-page maximum analysis that discusses the key strategic issue, alternatives,
recommendation, and implementation/action plan
c. 1-page financial analysis (in an appendix) whose results are included in the
analysis where necessary (but almost always in the recommendation and
implementation/action plan sections)
d. All work must be submitted in hard and soft copy as one integrated document
ready to be opened. Work submitted in multiple pieces will not be accepted.

b) Assignments: Each student will have to submit the hard copy and upload a soft copy
of the assignment on Black Board. This project is based upon observation of principles
and concepts of OB in daily life of the students. The students would observe situations
in the classrooms, hostels, campus, within academic fraternity. Some students who
have prior working experience may also recall a situation in their previous organization.
The situations would be such that has OB implications, with clear identification of OB
variables. The students would then draft the situation in 8-15 pages and submit the
same as a project towards the 20th session. The project would be evaluated by the
faculty members with the following rubric:

1. Relevance of the situation – 12 Marks
2. Implication of OB concepts – 12 Marks
3. Articulation – 6 marks
The project would not be evaluated if the plagiarism is more than 5%. (30% weightage)

c) Presentations: The presentations topics are mentioned in the course plan. Each group
(max 5 members) is required to present its presentation as per the schedule. Each
group is required to make two presentations (one topic and one case study). For details,
please refer section L. (20% weightage).

d) Self-Assessment/ Discussion – Each student is required to complete the self-


assessment exercise/ discussion for each of the online session (10% weightage).

e) Final test: Each individual shall have to appear for the final quiz. ( 10% weightage)

End -Sem Examination: 50% Weightage

End-Sem examination shall be of three hours duration. The examination paper shall have
objective & theory questions, short and case.

Passing Criterion: minimum 45% of the highest marks in the class

Student has to secure minimum 45% marks of the “highest marks in the class scored by
a student in that subject (in that class/group class)” individually in both the ‘End-
Semester examination’ and ‘Total Marks’ in order to pass in that paper.

Attendance

Students are required to have minimum attendance of 75% in each subject. Students with
less than said percentage shall NOT be allowed to appear in the end semester examination.

Cell Phones and other Electronic Communication Devices: Cell phones and other
electronic communication devices (such as Blackberries/Laptops) are not permitted in
classes during Tests or the Mid/Final Examination. Such devices MUST be turned off in
the class room.

E-Mail and LMS: Each student in the class should have an e-mail id and a pass word to
access the LMS system regularly. Regularly, important information – Date of conducting
class tests, guest lectures, syndicate sessions etc. to the class will be transmitted via e-
mail/LMS. The best way to arrange meetings with us or ask specific questions is by email
and prior appointment. All the assignments preferably should be uploaded on LMS. Various
research papers/reference material will be mailed/uploaded on LMS time to time.

K. Instructions
a) All students will be divided in groups comprising of 3- 5 students in each.
b) Students are expected to read the concerned session’s contents in advance before
coming to the class.
c) The session will be made interactive through active participation from students. The
entire session will be conducted through question-answer, reflections, discussion,
current practices, examples, problem solving activities and presentations etc.
d) In the case study session, all students are expected to prepare their analysis and
answers/decisions in their respective groups.
e) All schedules/announcements must be strictly adhered to.
