1. In elementary compressible flow theory, compressed air will exhaust from a small hole in a
tank at the mass flow rate ̇ where is the air density in the tank and C is a constant.
If is the initial density in a tank of volume v, derive a formula for the density change
after the hole is opened. Apply your formula to the following case: a spherical tank of
diameter 50 cm, with initial pressure 300 kPa and temperature 100 °C, and a hole whose
initial exhaust rate is 0.01 kg/s. Find the time required for the tank density to drop by 50
percent.

2. The dredger in Figure 1 is loading sand that has a specific gravity (SG) = 2.6 onto a barge.
The sand leaves the dredger pipe at 4 ft/s with a weight flux of 850 lbf/s. Estimate the tension
on the mooring line caused by this loading process.

3. A perfectly balanced weight and platform are supported by a steady water jet as shown in the Figure
below. The density of water = 1000 kg/m3, and D0 is the diameter of the jet.
