Assignment 2
Balancing & Friction

Answer all questions.

Q1 A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii of 10cm,

12.5cm, 20cm and 15cm respectively. The planes in which the masses
revolve are spaced 60cm apart and the masses B, C and D are 10 kg, 5 kg
and 4 kg respectively. Find the required mass A and the relative angular
settings of the four masses so that the shaft is in complete balance.

Q2 Attach to a uniformly rotating shaft are four disc A, B, C, D spaced at equal

interval along the shaft of mass 7.5 kg, 12.5 kg, 7 kg and 6 kg. The mass
centre of the disc are at 4 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm respectively from the
axis of rotation. An additional mass M may be attached to D at an effective
radius of 60 mm from the axis of rotation. Find the minimum value of mass
M, and the relative angular positions of the mass centre of all the masses to
ensure complete dynamic balance for the rotating shaft.

Q3 Thin solid rod with plumb bob A, B C and D weighted 1.2 kg, 1 kg, 1.2 kg
and 1.8 kg individually as shown in Figure Q3 are to be fix at rotational
shaft. Arrange an installation within same plane and same rotational axis to
eliminate unbalance phenomena. Rod A and B must be 90° apart. Your
position answer must be referring to plum bob A.

Q4 Friction can be helpful in some situations, and a problems in others. When it
is a problem, like when want to improve the efficiency of a machine. Give
five (5) ways how to reduce friction.

Q5 A screw jack having square threads of 5 cm mean diameter and 1.25 cm pitch
is operated by a 50 cm long hand lever. Coefficient of friction at the threads
is 0.1. Determine the effort needed to be applied at the end of the lever to lift
a load of 20 kN.

Q6 A multiple clutch is transmitting 12000W at 1500rpm. The inner and outer

radius for the plates are 50mm and 100mm respectively. The maximum axial
spring force is restricted to 1000N.

(i) By assuming uniform wear, calculate number of pairs of surface if

μ = 0.35.
(ii) Based on previous answer (a), what will be the required axial force?
(iii) Give three alternative ways to increase the amount of power transmitted
by the system.

Q7 A motor car clutch is required to transmit 15 kW at 3000 rpm. It is of single

plate type, both sides of plate being effective. If   0.25 and the axial
pressure is limited to 0.85 bar of plate area and the external diameter of the
plate is 1.5 times the internal diameter, determine the dimensions of the
plate. Assume uniform wear conditions.
