mineral composition and textures. Key concepts include

a) igneous rocks.

Online Prior to meeting with the students, they should have some knowledge about igneous rocks such
Activity as their origin, the cause and the transformation as in the result, these rocks are formed. Having
an activity prior to the simulations can prepare students for discussion with collaborative
engagement before, during and after.
An integrated video of volcanic eruption can set the class for a clear idea of the materials that
are going to be covered in class. Once the students are finished with the video, questions can
follow by simply asking the students what are the common names of rocks formed from a
volcanic eruption that they may already know. I will simply give them an introduction followed
by names they need to know and note, have a discussion by groups about these rocks to
brainstorm; volcano erupts, debris flows, gases in the air, lave flow…etc.
To virtually share and explain the lesson, I can simply use Google Hangouts which I have used
previously, and share screens of the lesson such as slides, visual posters, notes and definitions
that the students can refer to for better understanding of the rock cycle and igneous rock. This
type of sharing can allow the students to hear and see me presenting the class as if it is an actual
class and they can ask questions at the same time. The gizmo simulation can also allow students
to collaborate by answering any questions that I can ask referring to the igneous rocks and their
origin and formation.
Gizmo is a user friendly tool that the students can practice with based on their topic. The teacher
has a code that students can use to enroll in the Gizmo. Gizmo is a tool that can be used in a
variety of topics and used individually or by class groups. Assignments can be assigned and
then checked to be assessed.
Final assessment can be done by a review of the steps of the formation of igneous rocks. Then
use of Gizmo simulation as an application that simulates the topic. Others can be any questions
that need to be clarified and answered. Student’s feedback about the online learning process is
essential at the end of the class. Online teaching using Gizmo facilitates understanding for
students because it is visual and auditory learning tool and it allows students to manipulate their
learning right into their hands.
