Title: Effects of Computer Games in the Academic Performance of Grade Seven in Upper Bicutan

National High School SY 2017-2018 Based for Enhance use of Computer Games

Chapter II

Introduction:

In the past few decades, interactive electronic media has grown from virtual non-existence to one

of the primary means of entertainment for High School students. Education can change people’s

life but modern technologies can also affect the academic performance of students in school. Age,

Gender and the type of Gadgets are consider for this studies. This article examines the effects of

increased student usage of traditional video games as well as online games. People play video

games for a number of reasons, example stress relief, challenge and competition, relaxation,

enjoyment, social interaction, and even mentally escaping from the real world. Computer can cause

teenagers to be physically, and mentally ill, and the more the child spends more time on computer, the more

he/she loses time to focus on academics, and to talk to their family. Limit the time your child spends on

computer games. Be interactive; play board games that can boost your child’s social skills. Computer

games should only be allowed after the students have taken care of other responsibilities. For example,

parents are strongly advised to set a rule that video games can only be played after homework has been

completed.

Foreign Literature

This chapter presents the related literature and studies both foreign and local which represent to

the present study.

According to All Academic Research (2009), playing computer games may not be all that bad for

your children. Peng Wei states that educational games can be effective assisting tools in the

educational areas of management, medicine and science. If you choose the right educational

computer games, your child may learn better problem-solving skills and eye-hand coordination.

Your child may also get the ability to think fast and think of multiple things all at once. Skills

obtained from playing computer games may help your child learn quickly when it comes to his

studies. If your child is struggling in one of his school subjects, there are many educational

computer games available for him. There are math and reading related games that may help boost

your child’s skills. These games can be both fun and educational for your children.

According to C. Shawn Green, (2009) a psychologist of University of Winconsin “

video/Computer Games change the brain’ . Video games changes the structure of the brain and

can help released beneficial neurotransmitter surges that can build the brain. Now a days, many

multiplayer games such as DOTA or Defence of the Ancients and LOL or League of Legends

involve cooperation with other online players in order to win. These games encourage players to

make the most of their individual skills to contribute to the team.

An Article posted by Philippine Care in 2014 pointed out the researchers found that video games,

particularly shooters gams, have a tendency to strengthen the cognitive skill of their test subjects,

especially in the areas of spatial navigation, reasoning, memory and perception. These effects

shooter games have on the test subjects were not evident on other type of safe video games like

puzzles or role playing games

Gamers can utilize these advantages or computer games provided they play moderation. They

should not allow theme selves to be enslave by the games.

In his book Die Tryin': Videogames, Masculinity, Culture, Derek Burrill (2008) suggests that

modern videogames have borrowed much of their material from Hollywood. The player character

in many games, referred to as the avatar, is generally created to be at least somewhat superhuman.

Just like in movies, this portrayal of what an individual is supposed to be contributes to identity

development. Many games involve male characters that are incredibly well built and tough, and

female characters that are physically attractive. As Burrill puts it, “in short, avatars are sexy”

(Burrill, 2008) Not only did the kids with new game systems spend less time doing homework,

they also performed worse on standardized tests of reading and writing four months later.

Moreover, their teachers were more likely to report academic problems (Weis and Cerankosky

2010).

Local Literature

Dumrique and Castillo (2017) Online gaming is one of the widely used leisure activities by many

people. For some people it is said that playing video games has a number of reasons to be played,

for it can be a stress reliever, challenge and competition, relaxation, enjoyment, social interaction,

and even mentally escaping from the real world.

Villuan (2016) Computer games receive a generally negative reception from the people especially

parents, because of them, there are waste of time. Additionally, critics and rearchers have linked

computer gaming to video game addiction, violence, anti-social behaviour and attention problems,

among others. That usually analysis of violent and the addictive implications of this game of the

brain.

An article written by Lea Lebrilla Top 5 Advantages… (Lebrilla, 2010) suggests:

- Video games can be a new way of teaching, in this manner video games are being used as

a teaching tool and is seen to help students improve academic skills and creative thinking.

- It helps improve hand to eye coordination.

- Video games are also known to be used as a tool in psychological therapy aiding patients

to distract themselves from pain and unwanted sensations by diverting their focus and

getting them entertained in video games.

Since most video games are goal oriented especially those games wherein the player is on a

quest, it is believed to help improve one’s creativity in thinking as well as improve imagination.

Video games can improve one’s problem solving skills.

As some video games are logical in nature such as puzzle games and strategy games, it helps the

player to enhance his/her critical thinking and sense of logic as he/she would come up with

methods on how he/she would solve a certain problem in efficient and crafty ways. It is almost

safe to say that the advantages of gaming are somehow recognized especially here in the

Philippines where internet cafes are seen almost everywhere and the industry of game development

are young

Lojo (2008) conducted a study on the effects of playing computer games on the academic

performance of high school students. The results of her study disclosed that to maintain the good

academic performance of students, parents should set limits on how often and how long their child

is allowed to play computer games.

(Dorol 2009) Dorol conducted that electronic games were related significant to pupil’s academic

performance with correlation of .194 significant .o21 levels. This means that the computer games played
by the pupils before going to sleep, after taking lunch of supper, and during recess significantly related to

their performance in school.

Synthesis:

These days’ students are spending more of their free time playing computer games than ever

before. Although there are numerous benefits to playing quality computer games, there are also

many known negative effects associated with excessive gaming. Setting a regular routine for

student is essential to make sure that they rips the benefits of digital media without neglecting

other sides of their development.

In our modern time technologies make our work easy but some people abuse the use of

technologies and is has an impact in their work performance. A student who spent too much hours

in playing computer games affects their academic performance in school. If students are spending

too much time playing computer games, they may not be getting enough social interaction at home.

Students should have proper communication skills so they can interact with teachers and

classmates while at school.
