320 South Dearborn Street
Suite 3900
Chicago, IL 60604

Dear Senator Duckworth,

I am a current Senior at the University of Illinois in Urbana- Champaign studying Nutrition and
Dietetics, a constituent of the 8th district, and member of the Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics. The Academy is the largest organization of nutrition professionals in the nation with
over 73,000 members. I am writing to you today to ask that you support the Child Nutrition
Reauthorization Act. This act has been waiting on Congress to approve or deny the bill since
2015 and the improvements to the already existing bill can further provide resources to those
who utilize programs such as the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast
Program, for example. The main benefits of this bill provide programs to children and WIC
participants who qualify for aid via nutrition assistance programs.

The National School Lunch Program is something that I know you are familiar with after
browsing your website and you are therefore a great representative for the support for this bill.
The benefits of providing the programs in this bill include giving low-income children access to
nutritious meals at schools which will help them improve performance in school. It also
provides funding to head start programs, family child care homes, and afterschool programs so
children do not have to go hungry all day long. In addition to children, WIC mothers and their
children up to age 5 receive nutrition education and access to food to ensure they are getting
the proper nutrition to help them grow into strong adults. Without this bill, more than 30
million children would go without lunches every day in the United States, so it is easy to see
how vital these programs are to the future of our nation. If we provide the proper nutrition and
education to our nation’s children, we are giving them the tools to carry on as healthy adults
which also helps to reduce healthcare spending throughout their whole lives.

As Congress continues to deliberate over this bill I ask for your support in the fight for it’s
passing. As a future expert in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics, myself and the Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics’ members will continue to work to improve health and access to proper
nutrition for the nation and its children. If you have further questions on this or other nutrition-
related issues I would happily serve as a source of information for you.
Regards,
