Introduction

This is a group assignment which predominantly relates to the topics of Industrialised Building System (IBS).
Before embarking on this project students will be exposed to different types and methods of the IBS system and
the calculation of IBS scoring in the classroom. First, the group are require to design a 3-storey apartment block
using mainly IBS components. The group has to construct a physical sectional model of the building to show the
IBS components in detail.

Objectives of Project

1. To develop students’ understanding in different types of IBS construction method.

2. To apply appropriate IBS construction method in the production of a model for an apartment building.
3. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of IBS construction process through model making.
4. To foster good communication skills among group members through proper delegation of works and
production of deliverables.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Identify and collect relevant research data.

2. Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.
3. Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction.
4. Analyse and document construction methods and materials.
5. Enable students to assess and understand the methods of calculating the IBS Score

Tasks - Methodology

1) Form a group of 5 students under the same tutor.

2) Perform a study on a building preferably an apartment, which was constructed fully or partially using IBS
method and identify all the IBS components used including appropriate sizes, etc.
3) Design one or two types of apartment units which size should not exceed 100 square meters per unit and
each unit must consists of a living hall, a dining area, three bedrooms and two toilets. The design should
incorporate mainly IBS structure and components such as precast wall, blockwork, hollow core slab, precast
staircase, toilet pod, prefabricated timber roof truss, etc. with appropriate sizes.
4) The units shall be arranged as follows and made into three levels (refer Figure 1).
5) The content of report may include concept and framework of proposed IBS categories, relevant drawings
such as plans, elevations, sections, isometric view, sectional perspectives and details, sequence of
construction, schedule of modular components as well as the IBS score calculation for the building.
6) Concept and framework may include the suitability of proposed system, features of the proposed IBS
components, fabrication process and sequence of construction shall be included in the report.

(the plan should not be complicated)

Submission Requirement

1. An A3 size report consist of the study of proposed IBS categories and components, relevant drawings
(refer methodology), construction sequence as well as IBS score calculation for the building.
2. A sectional model of the apartment in 1:50 or 1:25 scale. The model shall be presented as full height
section and shall be partial of the building.

Marking criteria

Marks shall be distributed as follows:

 Completeness of submission
 Authenticity, creativity and workability of the design.
 Appropriateness and the number of IBS method used translated into model form and drawings.
 Quality of workmanship for physical model
 Discussion on issues related to fabrication of components, the sequences of IBS construction,
practicality and IBS scoring method.
 Appropriateness and understanding of applied construction, material and services.
