Learning Objective 6.11 The student will

The objective of the lesson is what students
will be able to do as they finish the activity. a) identify the coordinates of a point in a coordinate plane;
For this objective, use the Standards of and
Learning (SOL) to say what you want to
focus on. b) graph ordered pairs in a coordinate plane.
You can find the SOLs at

Activity Describe what the learning The objective of this lesson is for students to identify coordinates as
activity will be. What will the students and
the teacher be doing? (This includes what
well as graphing ordered pairs. The teacher will start off by explaining
they are doing with the technology). the difference and the correlation between coordinates and ordered
pairs. Students will then be able to come up to the smartboard
during this SMART lesson and drag and drop answers to questions. In
order to help the students understand the (x,y) coordinate plan, the
teacher will help them with a method called the Elevator and Floor
Method. First, student volunteers will come up to the board and drag
and drop the coordinates where the belong within the graph. If a
student drags it to the incorrect spot they will attempt it again or
have the option to have a friend come up and help, then explain why
it goes there. Second, students will have the opportunity to play a fun
game. The teacher will choose two teams of two. They will play a
version of battleship where they type in the coordinates in attempt to
hit the other teams ship. They play until the other team wins, this will
allow them to have a great time as well as better their knowledge on
coordinate plans. The students will then have the opportunity to put
the ”Elevator to Floor” Method to use by naming the coordinates of
the different dots on the graph. Now, the students should have a
good understanding of how to find the coordinates on the graph. The
teacher will ask for volunteers for the students to come up to the
SMART board and place the colored dots where the coordinates say
they belong. Students will then have the opportunity to use the
“Pen” attribute on the SMART Board and write out the numbered
coordinates of the objects on the graph, as well as matching the
coordinates with the correct object on the graph as well.
