Recording life
through art
By Meg Kennedy

A Bacchus Marsh resident has turned her life into a tangle

of illustrations for a new book.
A Tangle of Tales by Lyn Purcell follows a life illustrated
using an art known as ‘zentangle’ – a method using a
combination of dots, lines and curves, which are drawn
onto small pieces of paper called “tiles”.
The book features a collection of poems and short stories
that were collated over 15 years, which follow her life from
growing up on a farm in Toolern Vale to retiring in Bacchus
Marsh.
Ms Purcell says her love for zentangling came from a
catalogue that featured a book on the art, and from then “it
became like a disease”, creating patterns and bookmarks
for her grandchildren.
Her favourite illustration in the book was a tree designed
by her granddaughter, who was four-years-old at the time.
For how the Bacchus Marsh area has influenced her
writing, Ms Purcell touches on her time as a volunteer with
the SES, with the book giving an insight into her 18 years of
volunteer work.
There are also poems inspired by areas including
Mackenzie’s Flat and La Lal Falls, as well as conversations
with her mother about the Bacchus Marsh area.
On what she wants readers to take away from the book,
Ms Purcell says she wants “people to look at it, read it, and
say they recognise themselves in my childhood; as well as
young people who when they read it, I want them to get an
idea of how life was like back then.
“I also want people to know that they can write just as well
and would love for them to have a go themselves,” she said.
“We’ve all got a voice and it can be heard by anyone, and
not worry about what people think - just to write it. I think
that anyone can write.”

A special event to encourage

women to get in to fishing was
held last month.
The event, the first of its kind
in Victoria, was held at Tabcorp
Park on October 19, and included
various guest speakers, exhibitors
from tackle shops and Victorian
Fishing Association officers pre-
sent at the event.
Event organiser Tiffany Newton
said they had “a really good turn-
out”, with attendees hailing from
across the state, from Mornington
to Lilydale.
Ms Newton received a $5,000
state government grant from Vi-
cHealth as part of the ‘Change Our
Game’ initiative, which aims to
encourage more women and girls
to become active in various sports.
As fishing is Ms Newton’s sport of
choice, she decided to encourage
other women to do the same.
“The event was pretty much
about wanting to give it a go,
whether sport or recreationally,
or interested as a career,” said Ms
Newton.
“Beforehand they might have been [interested in fishing] but too scared to ask. Some of the
women who attended the night have been given a job in a tackle store.”
Ms Newton hopes the event encouraged women to join the traditionally male-dominated
