Assessing students after explaining the lesson

2. Describe what you will do to help achieve your goal (Strategies Used)

3. Ask the teacher how she assesses her students learning.

4. Roaming around the classroom to check on the students while doing the activity.
5. Will ask the students if they need help.

6. Describe how you can tell if you’re achieving your goal (Evidence)

Giving the students cards with smiley face, poker face and sad face (the students will choose the face based on what they
understood from the lesson.)

Opening (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small group activities)
Time: 15 min

In the warmer activity, I will ask the students to come to the carpet and make a circle, then I will start sing
Whole

“make a circle” song with them to warm them for the lesson. After that I will revise with them about what we
took last week to refresh their memory.

Guided Experience (group working with the teacher)

The first activity will be a whole class activity, where the students will be sitting on the carpet and I will
provide slides with pictures of the fruits and the foods, as well as their names. I will show them the pictures
and will ask them questions about them like “do you know this fruit?” or “do you know what is this?”

Independent Experience (small group activity 1)

This activity will be in groups, each group will have a big paper with two columns the first column is fruits and
the second column are foods. So, the students should classify the fruits and foods in the paper according to the
pictures they have and then they will discuss it with the other groups.

Teacher will:
Provide instructions for the students.
Will give the students the papers and the pictures.
Will assess the students learning.

Students will:
Time: 40 min
Small

Work in groups.
Stick the pictures to the following columns (fruits or foods.)
Will discuss their paper with their friends.

I will be assessing the students learning by roaming around each group and see how well they’re doing
and will ask them if they need help.

Independent Experience(small group activity 2)

This activity, the students will work individually, they will be given out paper plates with pictures of the foods
and fruits, and the students will be creating their own plate of food and then they will be talking about their
plates with their classmates.

Teacher will:
Provide instructions for the students.
Will give out the plates and the pictures for the students.
Will assess the students learning.

Students will:
Be working individual.
Will be sticking the pictures of the foods.
Will be discussing about their plates.

I will be assessing the students learning by roaming around them and ask them if they need help in
anything.

Independent Experience(small group activity 3)

This activity will be to assess the students learning, I will be providing the pictures of the foods and fruits again
to check up on the students learning, by asking them what’s the name of each food or fruit shown.

Closing
5 min

In the closing, I will ask the students to tidy up and line up to the door while singing “I can sing a rainbow”
Whole

song.
Time:

Assessment (highlight when/where you will do this is the lesson plan).

I will assess the students learning in each activity as it shows above.

Reflection
Analyze (A):
How well did your teaching relate to the students’ prior understanding?
 Think about what the students already know about this concept/subject?

The students for sure had a background knowledge about food because it’s something that they know through their life.
So, they were able to recognize the pictures of the foods but not the name of each one.

 Describe what you did to tap into the student’s prior knowledge of the concept/subject
I tapped into the students learning by first showing them pictures on the board and asking them about the name of
the food, for example I showed them a watermelon picture and asked them “what is this?” and they answered the
question by saying the name of the fruit but in Arabic, so what I did was that I started to pronounce the name of the
fruit in English and asked the students to say it along with me, that helped the students to read and recognize the
name of the fruit.

How well did you engage the students?

 Describe the level of student engagement that took place during the introduction, active engagement, formative
assessment and closing

The students were well engaged in the classroom, they were ready to learn about foods and fruits, so what I
did to get their attention and make them engaged throughout the lesson is that I showed them pictures at
the beginning of the lesson and started to warm them up by asking them if they know the name of the
actual fruit. Then I started to say the name of each fruit and asked the students if they know what do we
call this category of food which is fruits and they answered back by saying fruits so that showed me that
they were well engaged in the warming up part. After engaging the students, I wanted to keep up the
engaging in the students I gave them an activity where they will be classifying the foods and fruits (this
is how the lesson is being taught in the book even though the students should know the exact category
of the food, but it been given in that way). So, the students were working in groups where each student
had an A3 paper that they will be sticking the foods pictures under foods section and the fruit section
under fruits. After doing this activity I asked each group to come in front of the class and start talking
about how they classified the pictures on their papers. That helped me to assess the students learning
and see if the students are understanding the concept of the lesson and it turned out that they understood
the lesson. the other activity was individual where the students were given paper plates and pictures of
the food, and they have to stick the food and fruits names in the plate then writing the name of each
food/fruit that they stick on their plates. This activity helped me to assess the students learning in how
they spell the words. For the closing, I showed the students the pictures of the foods on the board to
check on their lesson understanding by asking the name of each food and fruit.

Why do you think the students responded the way that they did?
 Discuss any disruptions that occurred & why you believe they happened

Some of the disruptions that happened during my lesson is when the students started to move around the class, and not
paying attention, and the reason behind what happened is might be because the students doesn’t know the name of the
food and fruits and they started to do another things to avoid answering a question I might ask.

Use the ‘Areas of improvement’ section of feedback from MST/MCT

Appraise (A):
Did your lesson meet your teaching goals?
 Describe the evidence from your lesson which proves that the students understood the LO

The evidence shows that the students are working effectively and they know what they should do in each
activity.

Next Steps in learning and teaching (Using the evidence of learning above e.g. formative assessments briefly state
what you will do next in and show this in your next lesson plan).

The next steps that I will be taking it in advance to my next lesson is to go through the lesson very well and trying to
improve it on my way into making it easier and better for the students to understand it.
