2011 Japan Earthquake magnitude 9.

1
Caption: On March 11, 2011, at 2:46 p.m. local time, a magnitude-9.1

earthquake ruptured a 500-kilometer-long fault zone off the northeast coast of

Japan. Its epicenter was 130 kilometers off Sendai, Honshu; it occurred at a

relatively shallow depth of 32 kilometers. The temblor violently shook northeast

Honshu for six minutes and collapsed its coastline by one meter. The thrusting

moved Honshu about 2.4 meters eastward, and the seismic waves on the Pacific

Ocean floor set off tsunami about 700 kilometers per hour. The number of

casualties caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami could reach 30,000

people. More than 125,000 buildings were washed away or severely damaged;

property damage is estimated at more than $310 billion.

Earthquake in Japan
Caption: T he Japanese archipelago is located at the junction of the Pacific

plate and the Eurasian plate. According to the geological plate theory, when the

Pacific plate moves horizontally westward, it subducts beneath the adjacent

Eurasian plate. When the two plates collide and squeeze, the rock layers at the

junction will be deformed and fractured, resulting in volcanic eruptions and

earthquakes. The reason why Japan has become an earthquake-prone area is that

several sections below the surface of the country meet here. Japan is located on

the edge of the Pacific Rim seismic zone. This 40,000-kilometer seismic belt is

like a huge ring that is distributed around the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Rim

seismic zone is the most important seismic zone on the earth, and the plates

move violently.

Earthquake in Asia
Caption: The Pacific Rim seismic zone is due to its presence in the front of

the continental plate, with high temperature and high-pressure crust flows and

active deep faults, which will cause large earthquakes. There are two reasons for

so many earthquakes in Asia, namely the tectonic plates and the fire ring. The

structural board is actually a fire ring, so it is mainly a structural board. There

are two main tectonic plates, the Eurasian plate, and the Pacific plate, which

constantly rub against each other to create more earthquakes. The ring of fire

consists of the Pacific and North American plates. The Indian and Eurasian

plates also collide with each other. These are the main reasons for the

earthquake in Asia.
