Education
Her education began under the guidance of royal governess Catherine Peebles at
Buckingham Palace. Her brother Prince Charles was her only classmate. When
Prince Charles went away to Cheam School, two girls whose grandfathers were
senior courtiers were brought into the palace schoolroom. These were Susan
Babington-Smith and Caroline Hamilton. According to the royal biographer Brian
Hoey, the Princess was never too fond of Miss Peebles. ‘Mispy,’ as Miss Peebles
was known, was intensely attached to Prince Charles, but her relationship with
Princess Anne might be described as lukewarm at best. The next phase of her
education was at Benenden, in Hemsted Park, Kent. Jordanian Princess Basma bit
Talal was a contemporary of the Princess at the school. Her friend Victoria Legge-
Bourke was a year ahead. Victoria became one of Princess Anne’s constant
companions in life--a stalwart lady-in-waiting. Victoria’s niece is Tiggy

About Peter
Peter is one of those admirable individuals who, it seems, has never gone through
an “I don’t know what I’m doing” phrase. He has always known exactly who he is
and what he is going to do, and he has proceeded full speed ahead without any fear
whatsoever. He played rugby at Gordonstoun School, representing Scottish schools
and gaining his first “cap” as a blindside flanker in a match against France in 1995.
From Gordonstoun to Exeter to study sports science, then to a string of jobs (never
a gap in employment) first in sports hospitality, then banking for awhile, and
finally a big shot position promoting glamorous events for Sports Entertainment
Limited UK. His company was contracted to promote the Patron’s Lunch on the
Mall in June 2016, celebrating his 90-year-old grandmother The Queen’s
patronage of over 600 charities. SEL UK was paid £750,000 for the contract and
that ended up being problematic since the event failed to raise nearly that amount.3
Moreover, the event was criticized for the high cost of tickets that were sold to the
charity workers.4
About Zara
It is often written that Zara was named for its Greek biblical meaning “Bright as
the Dawn.” Indeed, Princess Anne told Brian Hoey that her brother Charles gave
Zara is, of course, a two-sided second generation Olympian. Her chef d’equipe
father was Anne’s teammate at the Europeans in 1971. He also has two Olympic
team medals (1972 and 1988) and is a four-time winner of the Badminton Horse
Trials7.
In a fantastic retelling of history that no one could have foreseen, Zara herself won
the European Eventing title in 2006 and was subsequently named BBC Personality
of the Year8. Yet it was only the first chapter for Zara. At the 2012 Olympic Games
in London, Zara carried the Olympic torch astride her legendary horse, Toytown,
and went on to help her team win the silver medal. And even that was just Chapter
2. She finished second at Luhmühlen in 20139 and achieved team silver (for
eventing) at the World Equestrian Games in 2014. Zara gave birth to a daughter the
same year. She suffered a miscarriage in 2016; however, near the end of 2016, it

was announced that she is pregnant again and expecting the arrival in the spring of
201710. In the long run, we might say it was just a speed bump in the course. Zara
isn’t showing signs of slowing down. She was as optimistic and enthusiastic as
ever when she sat down for an interview in Country Life magazine in August 2017.
Of her horse High Kingdom, she said: “He’s such a dude. He’s put together like a
weird little pony, but he’s a proper worker.”11

FANY
FANY is the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. In 1933, Princess Alice, the Countess
of Athlone became President of the Corps. During World War II, The Queen (later
Queen Mother) was made president and Princess Alice was appointed
Commandant-in-Chief of the Corps, which had changed its name in 1936 to the
Women’s Transport Service.57 After the Countess of Athlone’s death, Princess
Anne took over as FANY Commandant-in-Chief.58 In 1999, the Corps changed its
name again. Today they are known as FANY (Princess Royal’s Volunteer Corps),
commonly abbreviated to FANY (PRVC).
Ladies-in-Waiting

2. Miss Rowena Brassey, later Mrs Feilden (appointed circa 1970, after Miss
Mary; and had the bad luck to be the lady on duty, in the car with the
Princess and Captain Mark Phillips, on the night of the infamous kidnap
attempt in 1974)
3. Victoria Legge-Bourke (appointed circa 1973)
○ Victoria and the Princess were at Benenden School together, though
in different years, and by Victoria’s own admission, were not close
until a time after their paths crossed in Val-d’Isère in 1969. They
happened to be in the same “small skiing party,” where Anne was

chaperoned by veteran courtier Lady Susan Hussey59. Ladies-in-
waiting generally acquire the position by recommendation from other,
older ladies-in-waiting. We are probably still in the ballpark if we
have Lady Susan surmising that there’s a rough correlation between
skiing skills and the mastery of subtlety required in a royal aide.
4. Celia Innes
○ Married with two children already, at the time of being asked by
Victoria Legge-Bourke if she wanted to be “one of them,” Celia was a
fun-loving but sensible girl-about-town who quickly endeared herself
to the Princess. By the late 80s, she was indispensable, though perhaps
a little less energetic. She requested to be demoted to “extra” lady-in-
waiting--still wishing to be in the game, but also have a life of her
own.
5. Shân Legge-Bourke
○ Of course, people assume that Victoria’s sister-in-law joined Princess
Anne’s team on the recommendation of Victoria, but Brian Hoey sets
the record straight: “In fact, the person who suggested her name to the
Princess was Celia Innes.”60 Shân, the only child of a baron, inherited
Glanusk Park and so had to juggle her lady-in-waiting duties with
estate management. Although she employed an estate manager, as
Brian Hoey points out, she was very much a hands-on landowner. She
was also Chief Commissioner for Wales of the St John Ambulance
Cadets, which ties in nicely with Princess Anne’s role as
Commandant-in-Chief for the St John Ambulance youth.
6. Araminta Ritchie (née Araminta Luarde)
○ She is married to a senior Army officer (Brigadier General Charles
Ritchie, of the Royal Scots61) with what Brian Hoey calls “one of the
most delicate positions,” which is British for ‘like top secret or
something.’ Her phone number was unlisted even among staff in the
intra-palace directory. She lived in Paris and commuted to London
when required for royal duties.
7. Caroline Nunneley (formerly Wallace)
Trivia
1. Princess Anne was granted the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II in
1969. The embodiment of this distinction is a piece of cloth bearing a
framed miniature of Anne’s mother, worn on a gown with sash and star.
2. The Princess is famous for the words “Not bloody likely”65 in response to an
attempted abductor’s demands that she get out of her car. He had a gun, but
as she told the police, “I kept saying I didn’t want to get out of the car and I
was not going to get out of the car.”66
3. She was part of the British equestrian team at the Olympic Games
4. The Queen conferred the title of “Princess Royal” upon her only daughter in
1987.

5. In the year 2014, approaching the age of 65, she undertook a grand total of
528 engagements67. This is typical for the Princess. It would be odd for her
to have less than 500 engagements in the final counts by Timothy
O’Donovan of the Times68. She was “most active” in 201569; performed a
whopping 640 engagements in 201670; and was the “busiest royal” in 201771.
6. When she and her husband can get away for some leisure, they head for
Ardfern, Scotland for some sailing in Loch Craignish. Their yacht is a rigger
called the Ballochbuie72 73.
