(THERAPEUTIC CLASS: ANTI ULCERANT’S)

 Stomach: The stomach is a muscular, hollow, dilated part of the gastrointestinal tract that functions as an
important organ in the digestive system. Location: The stomach is located between the esophagus and the
small intestine.
 Anatomy: Esophagus, esophageal sphincter, main curved body, pyloric sphincter, duodenum.
 Secret compounds: Gastric acids (HCl, Nacl, KCl), and digestive enzyme (Proteases, Lipases,
Amylases).

 Some important stomach related diseases:


1) Ulcer: An open sore on an external or internal surface of the body. Example: Peptic/Stomach ulcer
(occurs inner lining of stomach), duodenal/gastric ulcer (occurs first part of small intestine).
2) GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease): Also known as acid reflux is a long term condition where
stomach contents come back up into the esophagus.
3) Heartburn: Also known as acid indigestion is a burning sensation in the central chest or upper central
abdomen.
