‘My Malcolm won’t be home’ Chaos as cop

Struck and killed by a freight
train while clearing a sidewalk, a
London man’s family is struggling
with their sudden loss as Ontario’s
Labour Ministry investigates the
death.
Malcolm Trudell, was an
employee of a contractor working
for the city, his mother and girl-
friend told The Free Press.
The 26-year-old had been clear-
ing sidewalks for about 12 hours
after Monday’s snowfall, when he
was struck by a locomotive at the

“This is the worst nightmare,”
Robin Kindree, Trudell’s mother,
said in a social media exchange
Wednesday.
She called her son a kind-hearted
man who had his whole life before
him.
“It is very hard. We don’t have
much to go on yet, as well, just that
my Malcolm won’t be home.”
The Labour Ministry has opened
an investigation into the work-
place death, a spokesperson said
Wednesday.
“He left the night
before . . . and I never
saw him again.”

The ministry sent two inspectors
to the scene Tuesday, but hadn’t
issued any work orders as a result
of the investigation.
Meanwhile, his family is left
piecing together the final hours of
Trudell’s life.
His girlfriend of nearly seven
years, Tylene Northrup, said her
boyfriend left the home they
shared to go move snow Monday
about 10 p.m.
“He left the night before . . . and
I never saw him again,” Northrup
said, adding his sudden death
doesn’t feel real yet.
“I’m just waiting for him to walk
through the door.”

The first officer to arrive, in pre-
dawn darkness, described a cha-
otic scene outside a London after-
hours club as the murder trial
of a Hamilton teenager charged
in the 2015 shooting death of a
London bike gang member began
Wednesday.

Campbell testified he found Steve
Sinclair lying in a pool of blood
with Suzanne Irwin, his spouse,
trying to revive
him.

Other patrons
were milling Sinclair
around panicked
and yelling they would “get the guy
who do did this,” said the officer,
who was the only Crown witness
to take the stand Wednesday.
Campbell testified he attempted
CPR but Sinclair was pronounced
dead at hospital.
Earlier, the prosecution laid out
its case, with 11 of 12 jurors hearing
it a second time after a procedural
snag ate up most of the day.

Spangenberg had just finished his
opening statement when Superior
Court Justice Judge Marc Garson
received information that led him
to discharge one juror.
The juror eventually was replaced
with an alternate. A recording of
the prosecution’s opening state-
ment was replayed for the benefit
of the new juror.
Spangenberg told jurors they
would see video, hear witnesses
and see forensic evidence to sup-
port the first-degree murder charge
against the accused, now 17, whose
name is protected from publication
because he was 15 years old at the
time of his arrest.
