Asalamo Alaikom Ayah. Over the last few weeks I have seen you
are really wanting to play with others. You were involved in a
science experiment with Teacher Maysoon on the 29 th October.
You looked like you listened as Teacher Maysoon explained what
to do. You tore your piece of cabbage up into tiny bits, with your
hands. You watched Teacher Maysoon pour boiling water over
the cabbage to make a red juice called ‘indicator’. You watched
Teacher Maysoon closely as she dipped the indicator into several
solutions and explained if the litmus went pink it was an acid, and
if the litmus went blue it was a base. When the litmus changed
stayed the same colour, which meant it was neutral.

You played a game of dominoes with Mohamed on the 12th

November. You gathered some dominoes in a basket and lay them
out on the table. Mohamed asked “Can I please have some” as he
saw you playing. “Yes” you replied and handed him a few dominoes.
He watched what you were doing and laid his out on the table in a
row, just like you did.

Today you were busy at the water trough. Fayrouz called out
“She’s in our space” as you tried to squeeze in between them. I
explained that “you needed to find a space at the water trough”.
You quickly found another gap and filled yoghurt containers with
water. You tipped that water into a watering can. When that was
full you tipped the water into mugs you had carefully laid out on
the ground. “Teacher, it very full” you told me as you saw me
watching you. “It is full Ayah” I replied which made you smile.
When Farida asked you for some water you tipped your watering
can over and filled her container. Farida helped you by holding up
more containers for you to fill the water with you had collected.

What Learning Occurred?

Ayah’s learning pathway for this term is developing more

strategies to play appropriately with others. She is confident to
try new experiences, such as the science experiment. Ayah is
learning friendship silks such as sharing resources. She is
showing us her flexibility to change the plan she had in her mind
to include another child. Ayah is developing her thinking skills as
she listens to a suggestion then incorporates the suggestion in
her play. Pai mārika (That’s great) Ayah!

How can we Extend this Learning?

We can support Ayah as she continues to learn more ways to play

with other children by talking with her about the rules if an
activity she wants to join in and giving her verbal and non-verbal
feedback about her choices in play.
