Lesson: words in the book.

Lesson Procedure:
1. Third Graders! I have noticed that we have been reading a lot lately. Some of you have been
reading to a partner, too. Have you ever said a word that does not look like the word written on
the page? Students nod or say yes. I have too. Today, I want to talk to you about Cross Checking.
2. Can someone tell me what they think cross checking might be? {Let them think for a few
moments before calling on someone.} Hope they say something about referring to the words on
the page or looking at the pictures. When we read, we want to constantly cross check or make
sure the words we say, either in our head or out loud, match the words on the page. Sometimes
we look at the pictures to try and figure out a new word and sometimes we flip the sound to say
the correct word.
3. When we are cross checking, we ask ourselves three questions:
a. Do the pictures and/or words look right?
b. Do they sound right?
c. Do they make sense?
What do these questions mean? Turn and talk to an elbow partner about what these might
mean when we are reading. Students will turn and talk for a few moments. Excellent ideas. I
heard people talking about how the pictures could match the words, but that it won’t always be
true. Other people said that the words we read may not sound right so we should reread and
flip a sound. Others talked about how the word we read may not make sense so we should stop
and back up to reread.
These questions are also on our Anchor Chart to refer to when reading.
4. We are going to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar today. Who has read this book before?
Students raise their hands or quietly respond. Well, we are going to reread it again today.
5. {Miss read the part about the leaf} Hmm… I don’t think that sounded right. So, I think to myself,
does what I said match the picture? No. Does the word sound right? Yes. Does it make sense in
the sentence? No. Let me reread the sentence and try again.
6. Repeat step five when we get to the Saturday page.
