INTRODUCTION
abstract

The final architecture design project is to propose a city co-working community centre. The
co-working centre should be a place for gathering, socialising and sharing between users
of the local community from the area. The theme is “Live, Work and Meet”, where
architecture of people, place and location serves aa roles in making a place more liveable
in the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur.

The chosen sites for this project are magnet areas for local and visitors in Kuala Lumpur.
The unique quality and condition of the sites will give a good reference for students in
making the Co-Working Centre a more interesting place with architectural space and
design. Site investigation in both macro and micro scale have been conducted thoroughly
in order to understand the site more. The targeted users of the site are also determined
through our analysis, making the co-working centre designed based on the needs of the
community whilst responding to the site.

The final design report is documenting the entire design process, step by step from the
preliminary stage to the final stage of designing, including the insight of my own
interpretations to the site, as well as my own perception on the design.
01
INTRODUCTION
project introduction

co-working centre
The “Co-Working Centre” will promote, showcase and integrate live, work and meet
aspects that the community could posses to the users. The project calls of designing a
place where it extends an unique identity and like wise serve as a platform for new ways
collaborative working to occur. With the three sites given in Kuala Lumpur, each site are
given to serve different demographic and may have different functions from one another.

The co-working centre, in order to adhere to the site, both tangible and intangible factors
the site are to be explored. From there, the programme and function of the co-working
centre can be defined , resulting in the building’s performance, feasibility, sustainability
and buildability, producing a legible design scheme for that particular site.

With the given brief, the building must not be larger than 2,000 sq,mts and not lesser than
1,800 sq,mts built in a minimum of 3 levels and maximum of 5 levels. Basement Parking
dos not count in floor area and level requirements. Fully open spaces, landscaping and
others are not to be included in the area calculation.

The initiative of the project is “there is no architecture without events, without actions
or activity” where the events around the site propose certain demographics that are
potential users of the Junction.  This co-working space allows the interlocking of thoughts,
opinions and habits of the community, bringing back a synergy like never before.
01
INTRODUCTION
project aims

Following the philosophy of Bernard Tschumi who believed that “there is no architecture
without events, actions or activity”, the overlapping of necessary activities, work, meet and
live, create opportunities for optional activities such as taste, relax and share to occur. By
providing spaces for the current events that happen on our site,   this co-working space
allows the interlocking of thoughts, opinions and habits of the community. Through the
integration of work, meet, live and the multiple complex layers of dynamic activities that
are created by events, the ability to create a place that is more enhanced, revitalised and
sustainable could exist- bringing back the synergy that was once lost.

The Junction is a place for users that have commonly share interests in the culinary and
musical arts, congregate and find a space appropriate to their desired needs and wants.
By combining the elements found on the site and the natural characteristics of human
beings, the Junction creates crossings of multiple spaces that are needed for the
community’s necessary and optional activities, resulting in a major convergence.

project objectives

1 To design a place where it will be a healthy working environment for professionals.

2 To create a place that allows collaboration and empowering people to work in strategic
locations, be given options of the different working styles of today and more flexible
environment.
3 To design a hub where people experience balance in life: where they have opportunities
to not just work but cut travel cost by offering transient or periodical living units moreover
opportunity meet, congregate, unwind or even play.
4 Fostering and encouraging the growth of professionals, entrepreneur and alike by
offering unique ways of healthier and personalized working environment.

SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
site introduction
The site is at the crossroads of three main roads, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Raja
Laut and Jalan Tun Perak. The site is surrounded by many semantic, structural and
historical landmarks. These landmarks help form the identity of our site, providing an
insight of the possible demographics that are potential users of our co-working centre. The
many landmarks that surround the site, that is constantly out-shined and unnoticed, tales
its form as a carpark that serves the white-collars in nearby office spaces such as DBKL.

SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
macro studies-demographic
Due to the site being in Kuala Lumpur, we get a rich demographic make up around the site showing the
multifaceted nature of the area. The site posses many groups such as business owners, malay
residents, indian residents, white collars, blue collars, and tourists, however with much research
most co-working spaces attract students, free-lancers and startup companies. With this in mind, the
Junction tries to stay out of the norm, by inviting the local site demographic to use the space. Amongst

the community, there are food enthusiast as can be seen during IFTAR KL and Ramadan Bazaar, fitness
enthusiast with their usage on bicycle lanes and participation in health events such as Senam Sihat
DBKL and finally music enthusiast whom are involved mainly in busking near Medan Pasar area. With
the rich interest, the Junction tries to serve these target users as much as possible by offering a place of
dynamism, comfort and convenience simultaneously.

SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
micro studies-regulations
The site has a total perimeter of 262.2 metres which consists of an area of
2193.6 metre square. According to law regulations, a setback requirement
of 4 metres from Jalan TAR and 3 metres from Jalan Raja Laut and Lorong
TAR 2 was needed. However, a zero lot regulation was acknowledge
against Swiss Hotel due to the sharing of parti wall. A maximum of 14
storeys could be built on our site and a slope of 1080mm exist.
02
SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
micro studies-circulation

Jalan Raja Laut links to Lorong TAR 2 is the most suitable for entry and exit
due to the least vehicular congestion. Its two way traffic allows easy flow
to and from the site, however to comply to regulations, Lorong TAR 2 would
have to be widen in order to accommodate two way traffic comfortably. The
highlighted area is the potential drop off point or entry to the basement
carpark.
02
SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
micro studies-events

The site is surrounded by many events around the area that occur every
weekend but of different cause. For my investigation, the events can be
dived to three categories, food, fitness and performing arts. In these three
categories, the target users were inspired to be accommodated in the
Junction. For example, KL CAR FREE MORNING hosts a bicycle circuit
that runs through Kuala Lumpur. This circuit starts at Dataran DBKL and
makes its way up north (indicated in blue). The circuit ends by making a
loop around our site and also finishes at Dataran DBKL (indicated in
brown). To use this to the Junction’s advantage, a proposed bicycle rental
was added to its programme and a bicycle lane to encourage the usage of
a “shortcut’ through the site. The bicycle rental supplements the idea of KL
CAR FREE MORNING towards new users.
02
SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
micro studies-architecture style

The emergence of highrise buildings on site causes a drastic change in scale and proportion of man-
made structures, breaking the harmony of the surrounding building. The Junction tries to accommodate
to this issue by stepping back level by level.

The colours seen on A and B are generally are of lower chromas, lower values and do not offer many
varieties of hues. The area is dense in population thus requires more buildings to accomodate. At C and
D, there are colours that are of higher chromas that consists of blueish and greenish undertones. The
occurence of these shades could be associated with nature such as the sky and vegetation- leading us
to believe the importance of revitilization. The Junction introduces different levels of green, trying to
create an oasis in the centre of this concrete jungle.
