Installation

5 Installation
It is LANDTEC’s recommendation that the installation of the GA3000 PLUS is in
accordance with the instructions laid out within this operating manual, and the
current BS EN 60079-14 standard.

5.1 Pre-Installation Requirements

5.1.1 General
In order to effectively install the GA3000 PLUS system it is important that the
site is ready and in a fit state. In particular, the following points should be
noted:

 A suitable mains supply as detailed in this manual is installed.

 A suitable location is determined for the installation of the
instrumentation.
 There are no health and safety problems on site – a risk assessment may
be required.
 All required gas lines are installed.
 Inlet pressure to the GA3000 PLUS system must not exceed 0.35 bars.
Applications where this is exceeded will require additional pressure
regulators and relief valves.
 The GA3000 PLUS system has been received on site, unpacked, and
checked for obvious damage.
 4 – 20mA/Modbus cable has been installed to the instrument location.

 Note: Failure to comply with any of the above may result in additional
time on site and additional costs.

Warning Power should NOT be applied before all plumbing and

wiring has been completed and tested.

Only a qualified person should make electrical

connections to the system.

5.1.2 Storage of the Gas Analyzer

The analyzer should not be exposed to extremes of temperature. It is the
user’s responsibility to ensure the instrument is kept within its ambient
operating temperature range.

5.1.3 Ventilation Requirements

There is a breather fitted to the GA3000 PLUS situated at the bottom of the
enclosure (see annotation B on GA3000 PLUS connection points). It is the
user’s responsibility to ensure there is a free circulation of air around the
cabinet.

5.2 Mounting the Cabinet

The system is contained in one cabinet. The cabinet is weatherproof with a
rating to IP65. The cabinet is to be mounted to a solid brick wall or framework
(preferably stainless steel) capable of holding the weight of the system.

Although the cabinet is IP65, consideration should be given to mounting it in

an area that is protected from the worst of the weather. For example,
maintenance of the analyzer will be made easier if it is not exposed to driving
rain. Positioning the cabinet in direct sunlight in hot countries should be
avoided (where possible) as this may increase the internal temperature of the
cabinet.

The weight of the cabinet and contents will depend on the options that are
fitted, but will be approximately 36 kg; it is therefore recommended that the
installation be undertaken by a minimum of two people.

Four mounting fixings are supplied and fitted to each corner of the GA3000
PLUS. Suitable nut & bolt or raw bolt arrangements will have to be defined by
the operator for fixing to the wall or framework (it is recommended that these
are stainless steel). Dimensions of the cabinet are provided in – Enclosure wall
mounting bracket dimensions:

be used as an indication as to which sample point the GA3000 PLUS is
monitoring.

The relays are volt free change-over contacts. The maximum rated voltage is
240V. The relays operate by energizing when the particular sample point is
being monitored and thus the 4-20mA and Modbus outputs should be read
when the solenoid changes state from energized to de-energized. Refer to
Diagram 6 - Relay wiring diagram in non-energized state for a relay wiring
diagram:

5.9 Connecting the Gas Lines to the GA3000 PLUS

5.9.1 Sample Lines
 The sample should be taken and returned to suitable locations at the
required monitoring point. It is recommended that a valve be
incorporated in the assembly so that the gas can be shut off if the
sample line is removed. See Image 1 – Inline ball valve on sample pipe:

Image 1 – Inline ball valve on sample pipe

 The line should connect to the upper surface of a horizontal pipe or on a

vertical standing pipe. This will prevent excessive amounts of water
entering the sample line.
 The gas connections on the analyzer (refer to annotation F on GA3000
PLUS connection points) are 6mm stainless steel bulkhead connectors,
suitable for 6mm o/d stainless steel tubing.
 The sample tube should be connected to the bulkhead connectors
labeled ‘sample gas 1’, ‘sample gas 2’, and ‘sample gas 3’, where
applicable.
 Ensure all tube connections are tight and free from leaks.

5.9.1.1 Sample Gas Conditioning

Care should be taken in routing the sample line, especially in cold
environments. The sample line may need insulating or even trace heat to
prevent freezing of water within the pipe. This is not part of the GA3000 PLUS
range and is the responsibility of the operator.

51 GA3000 PLUS Gas Analyser Operating Manual
Installation

The system incorporates a catchpot for removal of liquid and filters to help
prevent water from entering the analyzer. However, additional water filtering
may be required where the sample is heavily contaminated with water.

5.9.2 Air Purge Inlet

 The air purge inlet requires uncontaminated air for the purge line.
 If uncontaminated air cannot be guaranteed at the location of the
analyzer, a pipe should be connected to the ‘air purge’ inlet (refer to
annotation C on GA3000 PLUS connection points) and terminated at a
point where uncontaminated air is present.
 The connection on the cabinet is a ¼” BSP female bulkhead.
 It is recommended that the supplied particulate filter (LANDTEC part
number 2008277, see section GA3000 PLUS Consumable Products) is
fitted to the air purge inlet bulkhead prior to use of the system.
 Ensure all tube connections are tight and free from leaks.

5.9.3 Landfill Return

 This line is where the measured gas from the gas analyzer is exhausted.
It can be returned to the process (recommended) or vented to
atmosphere.
 The sample gas returning to the process line should be connected to the
bulkhead connector labeled ‘landfill return’.
 The gas connection on the analyzer (refer to annotation E on GA3000
PLUS connection points) is a 6mm stainless steel bulkhead connector,
suitable for 6mm o/d stainless steel tubing.

Warning The gas being exhausted at this point of the system will
be flowing at approximately 300ml/min. If the sample
gas is being vented to atmosphere, it should be routed
to a safe and well-ventilated area.

5.9.4 Vent Atmosphere

 This line is only used on systems with an air purge.

OMGA3KPLUS3.0  Copyright 2013 LANDTEC North America, Inc.

GA3000 PLUS Gas Analyser Operating Manual 52
Installation

 During an air purge air is vented from this line, meaning it can be left
open to atmosphere.
 If the GA3000 PLUS is being installed inside a building it is recommended
that this line is vented to a safe area away from users.
 The connection on the analyzer (refer to annotation G on GA3000 PLUS
connection points) is a 6mm stainless steel bulkhead connector, suitable
for 6mm o/d stainless steel tubing.
Warning When performing an air purge the gas that was
previously sampled will be vented to atmosphere for a
short period of time, typically 10 seconds. This equates
to approximately 50ml of gas per air purge.

5.9.5 Drain
 The drain line should be run to a position where it is safe to discharge
the small amount of liquid that is removed from the sample gas.
 Periodic inspection of the catchpot is required to check if water has been
collected. To drain the liquid:
o Pause the system (please refer to section Pause Sampling).
o Close the sample valve(s) (refer to annotation L on – GA3000
PLUS instrument components) to the horizontal position.
o Open the drain valve (refer to annotation L on – GA3000 PLUS
instrument components) to the vertical position.
 After the liquid has drained, close the drain valve, open the sample
valve(s) and resume monitoring.
 The connection is a ¼” BSP female bulkhead.
Warning The catchpot can hold approximately 82ml of liquid.

Dependent upon the application the water/liquid

removed may be contaminated.

 Note: This line may also vent sample gas for a brief period during each
draining operation if the sample inlet valves are not closed.

5.10 Heater Option

If purchased at the point of sale, the equipment will be fitted with a 100W
heater (suitable for the relevant mains input voltage) and control thermostat.
The thermostat is set by LANDTEC to 10°C and should not require any
adjustment by the user.

However, if adjustment is required then adjust the dial to the required

temperature setting on the thermostat (see annotation H on – GA3000 PLUS
instrument components).

5.11 Final Checks

 Ensure the sample valves are open (refer to annotation L on – GA3000
PLUS instrument components; these must be in the vertical position).
 Ensure the catchpot drain is closed (refer to annotation L on – GA3000
PLUS instrument components; these must be in the horizontal position)
power up the system.
 Ensure the calibration valve is closed (refer to annotation N on –
GA3000 PLUS instrument components; this must be in the vertical

 Five seconds after power is applied the gas analyzer should start-up,
displaying the logo and ‘power-on self-test’ message.
 The first time the gas analyzer is started after the self-test has
successfully completed, the ‘first time run set-up wizard’ will begin –
please refer to section First Time Run Set-up in this manual for details of
this process.
 It is strongly recommended that a known concentration of gas is passed
through the gas analyzer to ensure that the system is still reading
accurately following installation.

channels. This is dependent upon the sample
point (annotation K) setting. In ‘live’ mode
these readings are updated every 10-15
seconds.

K Sample point Defines the current display mode for the

gases:

 Live = gas readings currently being

taken from the current sample point
(annotation C). This is refreshed every
10-15 seconds.
 1, 2, 3 = the last data that was output
on the 4-20mA & Modbus channels for
the particular sample point selected.

6.4.1.1 External Sensor

 If fitted, the external sensor is the bottom gas displayed on the ‘main
read screen’.
 If fitted, the external sensor will be sampled when the gas analyzer is
sampling gas.
 On a GA3KPLUSC system, the external sensor is sampled periodically

 Note: The lifespan of the sensor can be prolonged by subjecting it to

shorter sample durations and longer air purges. The typical lifespan for
electrochemical sensors is 18 months in air, and this can be greatly
reduced if it is subjected to high concentrations of gases for long
periods.

6.4.2 Alarm Indications

 Alarms are only available on single sample point systems.
 A flashing bell next a channel indicates it is exceeding the alarm
condition.
 An audible warning from the gas analyzer will accompany the alarm;

Calibration

7 Calibration
7.1 Calibration Introduction
The GA3000 PLUS range of gas analyzers are carefully calibrated at
manufacture and when returned for service. However, it is sometimes
desirable to carry out a calibration process between services.

This section outlines the correct procedures to enable the site engineer to field
calibrate the gas analyzer.

 Note: This does not replace the factory service and calibration. If this
calibration is completed incorrectly, it may decrease the accuracy of the
gas analyzer.

All GA3000 PLUS range analyzers can measure CH4, CO2, and O2 as standard;
these channels can be user calibrated. There are also optional additional gases
to these which are specified at manufacture; these too can be calibrated. This
section will describe in detail how to calibrate the three standard gas channels
plus the additional internal and external sensors.

Two important terms that are used within this section are ‘Zero’ and ‘Span’.

Zero: The point at which the gas analyzer is calibrated when there is none of
the target gas present.

Span: The point at which the gas analyzer is calibrated when a known quantity
of the target gas is present.

7.2 Required Calibration Equipment

7.2.1 Gas
User calibration of a gas analyzer will greatly improve the data accuracy in the
range of the calibration gases used, and the environmental conditions for
which the gas analyzer is calibrated in. This may cause less accurate readings of
concentrations outside this calibrated range. Users should select the correct
calibration gas for the expected gas levels on their particular application.

GA3000 PLUS Gas Analyser Operating Manual 80
Calibration

The following table indicates the different gas mixture canisters recommended
for calibration:

Channel Range Recommended Gas

CH4 0-100% 60%

CO2 0-100% 40%

O2 0-25% 21%

H 2S 0-50ppm 50ppm

H 2S 0-200ppm 50ppm

H 2S 0-500ppm 250ppm

H 2S 0-1,000ppm 250ppm

H 2S 0-5,000ppm 3,000ppm

H 2S 0-10,000ppm 3,000ppm

H2 0-1,000ppm 750ppm

CO 0-1,000ppm 500ppm

These are for general use but other gas concentrations and mixtures can be
used. For example, a mixture of 60% CH4 and 40% CO2 can be used for the
calibration of these channels.

Warning Calibration gases can be dangerous.

For each gas used, the appropriate material safety data

sheet must be read and fully understood before
proceeding.

7.2.2 Flow Regulator

The regulator supplied by LANDTEC (see section GA3000 PLUS Consumable
Products) has been configured to deliver a fixed flow of 300ml/min. As the
regulator’s flow is factory set it only requires a few turns to open, but no
adjustment will be necessary.

 Note: If using a regulator that was not provided by LANDTEC, please

ensure the flow rate is adjusted to a maximum of 300ml/min. Suitable
pressure relief should be ensured to protect the instrument from over-
pressurization – typically 3-5psi (200/350mbar).

Warning When the gas analyzer is being calibrated, in cases of

over-pressurization the 1/16” port on the pressure
relief valve will release gas to protect the analyzer.

It is recommended that both ports have exhaust tubing

attached which must emerge in a well-ventilated area.

Ensure there are no leaks in the tubing and

connections.

The calibration of the gas analyzer should be carried

out in a safe area with all necessary precautions taken
when using dangerous, explosive, or toxic gases.

Problem Solving

10 Problem Solving
This section outlines various warning and error messages which the operator
may receive during general operation of the instrument. For further assistance
please contact technical support at LANDTEC on +1 (909) 783-3636 or email
technical@LANDTECNA.com

10.1 Fault Detection

10.1.1 Error, Warning and Fault Display
When switched on the instrument will perform a pre-determined self-test
sequence taking approximately sixty seconds. During this time many of the
instrument’s working parameters and settings are checked.

If any operational parameters are out of specification, the pre-programmed

recommended calibration/service date has passed, errors, warnings, or faults
are present, they will be displayed on the critical fault screen (see Screen 31 –
Critical fault detected).

Use the ‘Scroll Up’ and ‘Scroll Down’ keys to move through the list if required.
The instrument also performs background tests in normal operation.

 The most likely reason for the errors is either an incorrect user
calibration or sensor failure. If an incorrect user calibration has caused
the warning, it should be correctable by way of returning the instrument
to factory settings, zeroing, or carrying out a user calibration as
necessary for the relevant function.

10.1.2 Types of Faults

There are two types of faults on the GA3000 PLUS:

1. Non-critical: With a non-critical fault a ‘fault’ indication will appear on

the main read screen (see Screen 29 – Non-critical fault detected) and
the fault relay will become de-energized. During this fault condition, the
instrument will continue with its usual sampling process. Details on the
fault can be viewed by pressing key ‘3’, see Screen 30 – Viewing a non-
critical fault.

Problem Solving

Screen 29 – Non-critical fault detected

Screen 30 – Viewing a non-critical fault

2. Critical: With a critical fault the fault screen will appear detailing the
error (see Screen 31 – Critical fault detected), the 4-20mA and Modbus
outputs will be frozen at their last known value and the fault relay will
become de-energized. Monitoring cannot be resumed until the fault is
cleared.

10.1.3 Fault Screens

10.1.3.1 Non-Critical Fault Screen
The non-critical fault screen can be seen in Screen 30 – Viewing a non-critical
fault. From here, the user can see information on the fault and look to make
alterations or repairs to their system. With a non-critical fault the system does
not perform any retests unless instructed to do so by the user by pressing key
‘3’.

 Note: Pressing key ‘5’ will take the user to the diagnostics screen; see
section Diagnostics in this operating manual for further information.

Examples of non-critical faults are:

1) CH4 out of calibration

2) Incorrect time and date

10.1.3.2 Critical Fault Screen

The critical fault screen can be seen in Screen 31 – Critical fault detected. From
here, the user can see information on the fault and look to make alterations or
repairs to the system. With a critical fault, the system will re-attempt a self-test
automatically every five minutes up to three times. If no faults are found then
monitoring will begin. After three failed attempts user intervention is required,
however the self-test will retest every 24 hours for a further three times.

 Note: Pressing key ‘5’ will take the user to the diagnostics screen; see
section Diagnostics in this operating manual for further information.

Critical faults are:

1) PLC 1 in stop mode

2) Low flow or blockages
3) No communications to PLCs

10.1.3.3 Diagnostics
From either of the fault screens pressing key ‘5’ will take the user to the
diagnostics screen, see Screen 32 – Diagnostics below. The user may be
requested to view this screen if they contact technical support due to a fault.

10.1.4 Under and Over Range Codes

If a reading is under range (i.e. below zero) it will be displayed with ‘less than’
chevrons (<<). This can occur if a channel has been incorrectly calibrated.

If a reading is over range (i.e. above the maximum allowed reading), it will be
displayed with ‘more than’ chevrons (>>).

A number displayed as an asterisk (*) indicates an error and a hash (#) indicates
no data is available.

In most circumstances, a return to factory settings and performing a user

calibration on the particular channel will resolve the error. If the error is not
cleared by performing these tasks then technical support should be contacted.

10.2 Instrument Lock-Up

If for any reason the gas analyzer ‘locks up’ and will not switch off in the usual
manner of holding the ‘On/Off’ key, press and hold the ‘On/Off’ key for 15
seconds; this will force the instrument to switch off.

If this procedure does not resolve the issue, isolate the supply to the system
and turn the power back on. If the problem persists, please contact our
technical support team.

10.3 Analog Outputs not Working

Please refer to section 4-20mA Outputs in this operating manual to ensure the
outputs have been wired correctly to the type of input they have been
connected to. If problems persist, please contact our technical support team.

Problem Solving

10.4 Low Flow

The low flow warning appears when the flow rate drops below 50ml/min.
General causes of this are blockages in the system due to liquid and/or other
contaminates. Check and replace the inline water trap filters and catchpot
filters and retest the system.

If the problem persists, check that the fuses are still intact.

Finally, if the fault is still present contact our technical support team.

10.8 Event Log

The GA3000 PLUS incorporates the facility to log significant events performed
on the gas analyzer via the event log. This can be used as an aid to monitoring
the use of the system, and used as a diagnostic tool if there is a problem with
the gas analyzer.

The log holds up to 1,000 of the most recent system events. Applicable events
are stored in the event log automatically and no user intervention is required.
When the event log is full the events are wrapped, for example, event 0001
becomes 1001 and so on. The log is also cleared when the analyzer is cold
started.

Definitions of events are provided in the following table:
