Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Greetings of peace. Recently we implemented a new Mass and Confession

schedule. For many of you, this change required an adjustment of your
routine. We appreciate your accommodation to our needs. As part of those
changes, we added a 7:00 Mass on Sunday night, in hope of expanding the
number of young adults who attend the Shrine. That effort was largely successful
as such a group did attend last week. Please help us spread the word about this
new Mass in the schedule, especially among young people. It is challenging to
find creative ways to encourage others to participate in church, but is an integral
part of the call to spread the Gospel.

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM

Executive Director

FROM THE MUSIC DESK OF MARK EMERY, DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRY: Some
thoughts on Isiah 42

Prepare the way in your heart! This weekend we’ll hear these words from the prophet
Isaiah:

A voice cries out: In the desert

prepare the way of the LORD! Make
straight in the wasteland a highway
for our God!

Don’t we all have wastelands in our lives? They're not hard to find, from time routinely spent
worrying about future scenarios or conflicts, to sleepless nights, to New Years resolutions
already broken and out-of-reach. For today, let’s focus on the word prepare. What grace it is
that the prophet didn’t write fix yourself, or improve on your own. God’s offering is better than we
could imagine. We need simply to prepare; to make some space.

We all have places, habits, and space in our lives where we could begin to prepare for the
Lord’s work. It could be making time to journal about our repeated worrying, to meditating with
the TV off before bedtime, or getting to the gym on that day when it feel impossible. Anywhere
we can create space - a gap between our unconscious habits and new awareness - God will
come and do work we can’t imagine. He’s got spiritual bulldozers, emotional cranes, and
addiction wrecking balls.

Every valley shall be filled in,

every mountain and hill shall be
made low; the rugged land shall
be made a plain, the rough
country, a broad valley.

Is there anything better to hear than that something “will be done?” The prophet didn’t say, “you
do it.” Again, we’re the space-makers, the time-makers, the quiet reflectors. It’s a pretty easy job
He gave us. God will do the heavy lifting if we prepare and invite Him. At the same time, we must
be ready to let go of the importance of our mountains - often our source of validity as people. All
wealth, beauty and power will surely fade. God is calling us to redefine our priorities - to become
more useful to Him. St. Francis asked that God’s love would, “absorb [his] soul from all that is
under heaven.” I love that image - to be in the world but not attached to the things of this world.

Then the glory of the LORD shall

be revealed,

God’s “work-sites” always attract attention. It is in our very nature to be curious and drawn to
people who are becoming more free, more vibrant, and less encumbered by fear, dread and
worry. Often these people have surprisingly little to say about how they are achieving their
results. Why? All they did was make the space, the time, the possibility. God brings on the
miracle of transformation in often unseen ways.

and all people shall see it together;

for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
WORK-SITE CAUTION: Remember how well Jesus’s message went over with the
establishment? Well, here’s the word again: be prepared! Not everyone will celebrate God’s
transformation of your life. For many, your change will be seen as an affront to their own comfort
zone. Often it can even be those closest to us who have the hardest time seeing fear replaced by
God’s vibrancy. You may need to be the “prophet who is not recognized in your own town.” But
remember that Jesus didn’t stay put, trying to convince his hometown crowd. Like Him, let’s
move forward with our miracles and allow our community to adjust around us. As with Jesus’ own
story some will stay, some will go, and key characters will emerge out of nowhere.

Go up on to a high
mountain, Zion,
herald of glad tidings;
cry out at the top of
your voice,
Jerusalem, herald of
good news! Fear not
to cry out and say to
the cities of Judah:
Here is your God!

Who writes books that change others’ lives? Who can inspire with real-life example? Who can
liberate others with their very presence? The former captive - the person who made that space,
and allowed God’s transformation. Subway’s famous “Jared” wouldn’t have been as effective
had we not seen him in his valley- a struggle with weight and diet.

I love how the prophet doesn’t say, “mention it if people ask,” or, “yeah, sure...tell folks if you
want to...whatev.” NO. Find your high mountain, be of glad tidings, and cry out at the top of your
voice about your newfound liberty! That is our calling when we become more free of things like
obesity, drug or screen addiction, negative thinking, poor church attendance, racism, or any
other former valley. God will do miraculous work and He counts on our referrals! Isn’t this fun?
Don’t we get the greatest end of the deal here? It’s too amazing to put into words.

Here comes with power

the Lord GOD, who
rules by a strong arm;
here is his reward with
him, his recompense
before him. Like a
shepherd he feeds his
flock; in his arms he
gathers the lambs,
carrying them in his
bosom, and leading the
ewes with care.

As we head through these weeks of Ordinary time toward Lent, this theme will pervade our music
choices. It seems like the prophet Isaiah is laying out the 2019 manual for miraculous
transformation. It is a cycle toward freedom and usefulness-to-God that can be seen in every
Shrine ministry. May we encounter these words anew and for today, and not allow them to
become museum pieces meant for a past people. Truly God’s word is alive and this prophecy as
fresh as the day it was delivered. Prepare the way - make some space - invite the miracle!
