The motion of fluid flow has captured the interest of philosophers and scientists
for a long time. Leonardo da Vinci made several sketches of the motion of fluid
and made a number of observations about how water and air behave. He often
observed that water had a swirling motion, sometimes big and sometimes small,
as shown in the sketch below.

We would now call such swirling motions vortices. Like this type of real life
problem , Claude-Louis Navier & Sir George Stokes, 1st Baronet ,
individually, gave this Partial Differential Equation named Navier–Stokes
equations to get a systematic way of understanding the behavior of fluids

It is the fundamental equation of fluid dynamics. Compact form of Navier–

In short — Navier-Stokes equations are the basic governing equations for a

viscous, heat conducting fluid. The equations are expressed based on the
principles of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy.

They play a key role in computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Its Navier stokes equations. They describe motion of viscous fluids, they are
derived  by applying Newtons second law to fluids. Stress in the fluid is taken to
be sum of velocity gradient and pressure term.

The Navier-Stokes equations govern the motion of fluids and can be seen as
Newton's second law of motion for fluids. In the case of a compressible
Newtonian fluid, this yields:

where u is the fluid velocity, p is the fluid pressure, ρ is the fluid density, and μ
is the fluid dynamic viscosity. The different terms correspond to the inertial
forces (1), pressure forces (2), viscous forces (3), and the external forces applied
to the fluid (4).

The Navier-Stokes equations were derived by Navier, Poisson, Saint-Venant, and

Stokes between 1827 and 1845.

These equations are always solved together with the continuity equation:

The Navier-Stokes equations represent the conservation of

momentum, while the continuity equation represents the conservation of mass.

As others have already pointed out, the Navier-Stokes equations arise basically
from the conservation laws of Energy, Mass and Momentum. However, if you
want a more practical grasp, I can show you some simulations.

Take, for example, the problem of flow around a cylinder, shown below:

Another nice example is the flow around an F1 race car:

Fluid dynamics deals with the motion of liquids and gases, which when studied
macroscopically, appear to be continuous in structure. All the variables are
considered to be continuous functions of the spatial coordinates and time. The
Navier-Stokes equations are a set of nonlinear partial differential equations that
describe the flow of fluids. They model weather, the movement of air in the
atmosphere, ocean currents, water flow in a pipe, as well as many other fluid
flow phenomena.

To put it in simple terms, Navier Stokes Equation is basically the Momentum

Conservation Equation for a fluid flow, applied over a control volume. Till date,
it remains one of the most intriguing and un-solvable equations, pertaining to
the fields of Physics, Mathematics and Engineering, primarily due to the spatial
and temporal variations of multiple parameters, including velocity components
in three independent directions, added with pressure gradients and viscous
force components.
