A large contingent of town residents was at the
last regular town council meeting to throw their
support behind Harrison Gray, a long-time member
of the Kinsmen Club, who made a presentation to
council.
“I’m greatly concerned about the mayor and the
councillors’ approach to building a new office in the
northwest corner of the Kinsmen Park,” he said. “I
think there are numerous flaws in it, and I hope to
give you some better options and different ideas as
what could be done.”
Gray added he is in favour of a town office but
thinks the location is “terrible.”
According to a news release issued by the town
last year, the current town office location is at ca-
pacity, and health and safety issues have arisen. A
potential location being discussed is the parking lot
at the north end of Kinsmen Park.
According to Gray, Kinsmen Park is the top attrac-
tion to Strathmore with its pathways, fishing pond,
fishing docks, gazebos and farmers market, and it is
well used by the citizens of Strathmore and visitors
to Strathmore.
“The future development and enlargement of this
(park) should be a high priority for the town coun-
cil,” said Gray. “By planning and putting the office
in the northwest corner I think that you’re basically
downsizing the park and eventually it will be a big-
ger problem.”
Town of Strathmore Mayor Pat Fule said he and
councillors have discussed Gray’s suggestions,
which were outlined in a letter to the town and pub-
lished in the Jan. 11 issue of the Strathmore Times.
“We’ve talked among ourselves as a group and
we’ve definitely considered looking at some of the
things that were mentioned by your group regard-
ing the café and the upper deck that looks out onto
the lake,” noted Fule. “We had decided we weren’t
married to those items, that we could move away
from that as well.”

A taste of Nashville in Standard

out his musical career to
work on his songwriting
and to take in Music City’s
talent, local musician Drew
Gregory fell in love with the
city’s musical flair and style,
and is working on bringing
some of that back to Alberta
through the creation of his
own songwriter’s rounds.
Gregory, in a fundraiser
sponsored by the Standard
Community Hall, has invited
three Alberta artists to join
him on stage at the hall on
Jan. 24 to participate in A
Taste of Nashville songwrit-
er’s night.
“It’s a huge thing down
there (Nashville); they’ll get
three or four songwriters
and they will all sing one
song at a time, but they’ll
talk to each other and tell
stories,” said Gregory.
Gregory brought the first
songwriter’s night show to
Standard last April. The up-
coming show will feature
songs and stories by Luanne
Carl from Renegade Station,
Devin Cooper from Innisfail
who has been writing with
Gregory, Blake Reid from
Cremona who will be per-
forming by popular demand
after sharing in the last song-
writer’s round, and Gregory
himself.
The show will be set up
theatre-style at the Standard
Community Hall with the
performers on stage with
their guitars. Audience mem-
bers will be able to watch
the two-set performance
with a break in between.
“I think the special part
about it is that you get those
moments where you can
hear a pin drop in the room;
everybody was so respectful
the last time we did it and
that, to me, is the special part
about them,” said Gregory.

Rosebud businesses continue to thrive and diversify

Rosebud businesses, such as Rose
Cottage Bed and Breakfast and the Kith
and Kin gift shop, continue to thrive,
despite the fluctuations of the greater
economy.
Sue and John Miller, who have been
operating the Rose Cottage Bed and
Breakfast for 21 years, said their rooms
are consistently full, and they often
have to turn guests away. Most of their
guests are patrons of Rosebud Theatre,
Sue Miller said, but despite the fact
some Rosebud Theatre shows in 2017
and 2018 were more successful than
others, Rose Cottage was fully booked.
“I’ve had guests who have come for
every (Rosebud Theatre) show since we
started 21 years ago,” she said. “I have
folks that (say) ‘if you’re full, when are
you not full? Because we’re coming to
stay with you.’”
Travis Friesen is owner of Kith and
Kin gift shop, now in its fourth year
of operation. Kith and Kin offers high-
quality gifts and crafts, emphasizing
business relationships with local artists
and artisans.
“(Business has) been consistently im-
proving every year,” Friesen said. Along
with growing financially, he said, the
store looks more and more appealing as
he and manager Karina Nickel become
increasingly aware of what patrons
want, and continue to build relation-
ships with artists.
Friesen sees a correlation between
business at Kith and Kin and the suc-
cess of shows at Rosebud Theatre.
“I don’t experience a lot of boom and
bust,” he said. “It stays fairly consistent.
But there’s no hiding it: I am directly af-
fected by the sales of the theatre. If peo-
ple aren’t coming to the show, they’re
not walking into my gift shop.”
At the same time, he’s seeing the busi-
ness grow as theatre patrons become

“They popped into the gift shop
(when they came to the last show), and
they like it. So now when they do come
to Rosebud, (Kith and Kin) is on their
radar.”
In the years ahead, Friesen and Miller
both want to see a diversity of business-

Great experience
Some Strathmore equestrians were part of the
Calgary Stampede Showriders’ participation in
the 130th Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, Ca-
lif., on New Year’s Day. Showriders coach, Ja-
mee DeWit, and two riders – Alie Chernoff (top)
and Lexy Doyle-Green (above) – took part in this
year’s event. DeWit said the horses the Showrid-
ers rode in the parade were rented in California,
and the team was able to have three practices
with the horses before the event. In the parade,
the Showriders acted as the mounted colour
guard for the Calgary Stampede Showband. This
is DeWit’s third time to the Rose Bowl Parade; her
first time was as a Showrider member in 2003,
and she took part twice as head coach in 2012
and again this year.

What happened to the love of the game?

I’ve been a fan of sports for as long as I can remember,
and I’ve always felt that people played them because it was
something they’re passionate about. While that may be true
in some cases, I also feel that some people tend to get too
competitive and begin to lose sight of what made them love
the sport in the first place. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think
it’s very important to have a competitive drive and people
need to push themselves to get better. But in saying that,

here are a few things that I have to say.
First let’s talk about the coaches. When it comes
to children being on the ice, the field or the court,
I feel that there are coaches who don’t give cer-
tain kids on the team a chance to show what they
are capable of, or help them build confidence by
allowing them to be out with the rest of the team
instead of being a benchwarmer. Anybody can be
a benchwarmer.
Children need to show their capabilities and
shouldn’t be discouraged by sitting out on the
bench all the time. They need encouragement,
confidence and, most importantly, to have fun,
which in my opinion is something that most peo-
ple in sports tend to forget. I have seen kids on
the bench with sad faces wondering why they are
not out there trying to score a goal just like the
rest of the team. Coaches worried about that al-
mighty score and the children are sitting there
wondering, “why am I not good enough?” So, the
fun is taken out of that for the kids. These coach-
es picked the players so each kid should have
equal opportunities in the game. As for the “star
players,” they are exhausted by the end of the
game because they are repeatedly sent to score
that “big goal.”
Now, let’s talk about the parents. I have seen
and heard in local sports in the community and
out of town that there are a lot of negative and
unruly parents who, in my opinion, take these
games way too seriously and are not teaching the
children true sportsmanship. How is any of this
teaching the kids to not only better themselves,
but also have fun while playing the game? Be-
cause, at the end of the day, that’s all it really is –
a game. Instead of yelling vulgar, rude comments
to these kids, they should be hearing words of
encouragement because they need to boost their
self-confidence to help them become better play-
ers. Keep that in mind the next time you go to a
game.
I hope you enjoyed today’s column and keep
in mind that this is only my opinion and observa-
tion. Have fun kids!

As a long-time resident of Strathmore, I am con-
cerned with the relocation of a new town office to the
northwest corner of Kinsmen Park. I am sure many
communities would love to have this park. Kinsmen
Park is certainly an asset to Strathmore with the green
space available and is enjoyed by so many. We need
to look to the future when, no doubt, the town will
need an enlarged office and more parking, and again
the park will be whittled away. Once the green space
is developed for businesses, instead of recreation, we
can’t get it back. To me the purpose of the town office
is to be a functional building from which to manage
the town business, not an anchor to attract people to
the downtown shopping area.
Some of my main concerns are:
1. Location - Why can’t the present location be used
since more land is available? (4.5 acres with the re-
moval of the water reservoir and probably the reloca-
tion of the maintenance shop to the Orchard Park site,
which the town recently purchased.)
Looking ahead, the current site is better suited for
a town office rather than senior housing and a hos-
pice which is being proposed for development in the
future.
2. Parking - With the renovations to the downtown
area and less parking available, people were being
encouraged to use the Kinsmen Lake parking area.

I’ve been living in the area and frequent going
to Strathmore for 30 years watching the town grow.
Some of what I like about this area is the small-town
feel because of open planning, free parking without
concern to time, and friendliness, etc.
As has been stated, Kinsmen Park was developed
for people, so why put a building into the rare area of
openness? What other area other than the agricultural
track location is there for people to hang out in of this
size and location? What other area has had multiple
events happening at the same time in a central loca-
tion and able to support parking?
My experience is, if there is an event like Cana-
da Day or Show and Shine or a school’s music band
event, etc., do you think it would be an improvement
to have less parking access, especially for those that
have mobility issues? What do you think it’s going to
do for local business’s customer parking access if we
take that parking area away when an event is happen-
ing at the park?
Ask yourself how many times this year did you go
to the town office for service? Do you think people
that go to the town office during business hours
would tend to go shopping right after that?
When sitting or walking around the lake would you
prefer to view a building looking north or a continual
open space toward Lambert Park? Do you think that
safety would be compromised for kids if people are
searching for limited parking around the park?
What are we turning this small-town environment
into by doing this?

given to the location. Some bad planning decisions
have been made in the past and it is very important
that the present town council and the citizens of
Strathmore think ahead to the future of Strathmore
and “our gem,” Kinsmen Park.
Over the years, many new improvements and en-
hancements have been made in Kinsmen Park and
more ideas are being generated. Let Kinsmen Park
be the anchor of our community where the citizens
of Strathmore can gather and enjoy our heritage for
years to come.

the cost, that’s a good question as it appears there are
some hidden costs in disturbing the parking area. Has
that been accounted for? I can only assume the town
representatives of the people in Strathmore would
know this total cost, right? So, what is it?
There was a statement made that the cost of devel-
oped plans would be lost if this location was not to
happen. My question is, was it asked to the owners of
that area, “Strathmore’s people,” if it was a good idea
in the first place before spending a dime? If not, it
seems a little presumptuous.
What is the cost to redo the current town building
given they have the land around the building to ex-
pand, does anyone know? Was it presented to Strath-
more residents? The extra land around the current
town building would seem to have been planned for
future expansion, or why does it exist?
As we build up the town area and parking becomes
more of an issue to deal with, do you think that regu-
lating the time parked won’t become metred park-
ing? It’s just a matter of time unless we decide not to
force that happening by allowing current space to be
of value in representing what this town is all about.
People commute to Calgary for a reason so let’s not
take that away by becoming like Calgary.

ty Christmas Hamper Society provided
245 hampers and 272 child gift bags to
deserving families within Strathmore,

munities this past Christmas Season,

Local woman honoured

A local woman and her son were
honoured by the Strathmore Fire De-
partment on Jan. 8 after receiving a Cit-
izenship Award following their success-
ful efforts in extinguishing a garbage
can fire last year.
On Oct. 27, 2018 at 3:50 p.m., Nadine
Horne and her son James Horne were
walking past the doors at the Strath-
more Family Centre when they noticed
smoke rising out of a garbage can.
They jumped into action and found the
assistance of James,” said Lauren Mc-

“Ultimately, we decided we should
do something for her because she went

Help for people
experiencing homelessness

Hayley Rosenau of Strathmore has a heart for
people experiencing homelessness, and she’s do-
ing something about it.
Two years ago, when Rosenau was a first-year
student at Rosebud School of the Arts, she and her
classmates took a theatre study trip to Vancouver.
It was her first opportunity to visit British Colum-
bia. Visiting Vancouver’s East Hastings was also
her first real opportunity to observe the conditions
of people experiencing homelessness.
“Throughout that trip you’re doing workshops
with world-class actors, doing amazing theatre,”
she said. “But all I could think about was these
people living on the street. I realized that we have
a very large problem on our hands. That’s no way
for anyone to live. I wanted to be part of the solu-
tion for that.”
To be part of that solution, Rosenau founded a
non-profit company called Anchored Warrior, and
is planning to host a pop-up store in Calgary at the
end of January. She’s looking for a venue and will
have members of Calgary’s homeless community
shuttled to the location for the day. Guests will be
able to “shop” at no cost for essential items such as
warm jackets, blankets, good-quality clothes, toi-
letries and children’s items.
The company name, Anchored Warrior, is a com-
bination of words that, to Rosenau, mean strength,
steadfastness, resilience and making it through the
impossible. That’s what she hopes to offer people
experiencing homelessness.
According to Rosenau, besides meeting their
physical needs, it will also give them some of their
dignity and humanity back.
“Letting them know they are important and they
do matter, and people do care about them. Short-
term, I hope it helps them make it through the
winter and makes their lives more enjoyable,” she
said. “But I’m also hoping it gives them a boost of
confidence and integrity.”
She dreams of providing even more.
“I would love to see it grow to where we can
prep them for jobs, bring them in for haircuts,” she
said. “Get them ready to maybe start over again.”

Wheatland County Council passed first reading
for a fire board, in a new bylaw passed on Jan. 8.
Council requested staff draft the bylaw, after a
planning and priorities meeting discussion.
“After first reading of the bylaw, if necessary,
staff will prepare any amendments to the bylaw for
second and third reading at a meeting of council’s
choosing,” said Judy Unsworth, regional fire.
Unsworth stated that there is an informal group
that has recently dealt with discussions on fire is-
sues, but the bylaw will formally recognize deci-
sions forwarded to council.
The bylaw states that the board will be made
up of three council members, five people from the
various fire associations and two county citizens at
large. No one serving as a volunteer firefighter may
sit on the board.
The board will appoint a council member from
the board as chair and vice-president of the board.
Council can appoint members if a vacancy arises
during the one-year term. Council also has the op-
tion to remove a person from the board, but those
removed may apply to sit again the following year.
A shortage of members will not affect the board’s
actions. Decisions will be reached by consensus
of members at the meeting, and those decisions
will be considered as the decisions of the missing
board members.
A quorum consists of whoever shows up to the
meeting.

With a final score of 45-24, the Cougars took the lead
quickly and never let go with a combination of efficient of-
fense and a smothering defense.
“Offensively we did a whole lot better job of seeing guys
that were open and moving the ball around the floor,” said
Cougars head coach Cory Nelson. “We were really good at
stopping them from making points so it all just seemed to
work out OK for us tonight.”
The Cougars used their transitions very effectively in the
first quarter and it got them a 11-3 lead. The Hawks had the
ball a lot but struggled to make baskets, while the Cougars
made their mid- to long-range shots.
The Cougars defense was very strong and kept the Hawks
to the outside. The Hawks tried to break into the key but
were often double-teamed before they had a chance to
shoot. The Hawks had no answer for the Cougars precision
passing and looked at a huge 26-7 deficit after the second
quarter.
In the second half, the Hawks started to make some shots
but the play was still dictated by the Cougars. The Hawks
finally showed some life in the fourth quarter and scored
eight points in the opening 1:30. Despite the score, hope
began to creep back into the Hawks game but the Cougars
used their defense to slow the play down and grind their
way to victory.
“We were mentally asleep for a lot of the game,” said
Hawks head coach Ben Chin. “We got out-worked at certain
periods of time.”
Chin saw lots of positives in his team throughout the
tournament and was pleased his squad made it to the
