Third grade Math Lesson

Teacher: MariaLiza Batiller

Grade: Third grade
Content Area: Math

1. Content and Standards:

3.NBT.A.2: Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms
based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between
addition and subtraction.

2. Prerequisites:
- Students should know how to add and subtract within 100 using strategies.
- Students should know that addition and subtraction are inverse operations.
- Students should be familiar with the steps needed to round numbers to the
nearest ten or hundred.

3. Essential Questions:
- What are standard procedures for adding and subtracting whole numbers?
- What is a compatible number?
- How can I use place value to break down large addition or subtraction problems
into smaller ones?

4. Materials and Equipment:

- Pearson envision Math 2.0 workbooks: There is a Teacher’s Edition and the
Student editions.
- Digital projector and Document Camera: The Pearson Math workbook will be
projected to the board.
- 9-7 Exit ticket: This exit slip will be given to the students to assess their
understanding of subtracting multi-digit numbers.

5. Instructional Objective:
Students will know how to add and subtract 3-digit numbers and be able to
demonstrate an understanding of place value using partial sums and partial
differences and regrouping.

6. Instructional Procedures:
- Before: Homework Review of Lesson 9-7.
a. Call students to the board to show their answers for #2 - 4. Review if their
answers are correct by using both addition and estimation strategies on
the board. Display the answers using the Document Camera.
b. Read each word problem, 17 and 21. Call upon a student to demonstrate
their answer for each. Write the math equation for each on the board.
- During: The same procedure will be used for each Reteaching Set on pages 525-
528 as it is projected onto the board. We will work on Sets A to G.
a. The teacher will select a student to read aloud the “Remember” statement
which presents the math strategy that is reviewed in the Reteaching Set.
b. Group work: The teacher will read aloud the sample math equation then
review the addition or subtraction strategy presented in the book. As a
class, we will work on one math problem in the set using the strategy.
c. Independent practice: The students will be assigned math problems to
complete on their own.
- After:
a. The students will complete an exit ticket.
b. If we are not able to complete the Sets then students will finish the
Reteaching pages for homework.

7. Assessment:
Formative: The teacher will observe students as they are working on math problems
as a class. The teacher will observe and listen to students’ responses to determine
whether they understand each math strategy.
Summative: Collect both the Reteaching pages and the exit slip to assess whether
students are able to apply the appropriate math strategy i.e. regrouping and place
value reasoning.

8. Differentiated Instruction:
Pair struggling learners with students who demonstrate a good understanding of
regrouping and place value.
