Part 1: Concepts and Principles
Scope
This standard applies to the whole life cycle of a built asset,
including the strategic stage, initial design and construction,
day‐to‐day operation, maintenance, refurbishment, repair and
end‐of‐life.

The concepts and principles contained in this part of the standard

are aimed at all those involved in the asset life cycle. This
includes, but is not limited to, the asset owner/operator, the project
client, the employer, the asset manager, the designer team, the
construction supply chain, equipment manufacturers, system
specialists, policy makers, regulators and end‐users.

Part 1: Concepts and Principles
Level of definition (LOD)
The quality of each information deliverable should be defined in two ways in terms
of its granularity. The level of detail (LoD) defines graphical content and the level of
information (LoI) defines nongraphical content. The LoD and LoI should be defined
based on what information is needed rather than the ease with which information
can be generated. The LoD and LoI are specified independently of each other, so a
high LoD does not necessarily imply a high LoI or vice versa. The combination of
LoD and LoI is known as the level of definition.

The definitions of LoD and LoI may be based on a national standard such as a
project process but may also be specific to a project, asset, asset owner/operator or
project client.

The LoD and LoI should be included in the asset information requirements or
contracting party’s information requirements and addressed in the information
delivery plans.
