Hotel President Wilson, Geneva, Switzerland
BACKGROUND
The AESGP Annual Meeting has established itself as the principal
international conference on the consumer healthcare industry.
It brings together more than 300 delegates from the consumer
health industry, partner organisations and policy makers. Major
trends for the sector are elaborated with leading experts in the
field. In addition, the AESGP Annual Meeting is a unique occasion
to meet colleagues from the industry and engage in discussions
with healthcare stakeholders and policy makers.

INTRODUCTION
TO THE 55TH AESGP ANNUAL MEETING
Today’s self-care environment is as complex as ever: the regulatory landscape continues to be
fragmented in Europe as well as globally, and the regulatory burden is increasing. Socially
conscious citizens demand socially conscious and environmentally friendly products. Economic
growth perspective for the European region is considered weak. The year 2019 is a turning
point in EU history, for it is the year that witnesses the departure of one of its Member
States. Meanwhile, it also witnesses an influx of new technologies that have the
indisputable power to drive the self-care environment forward. How do we navigate
the options? HOW DO WE EVOLVE THE SELF-CARE ENVIRONMENT?

Join the 55th AESGP Annual Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, to debate

emerging sector trends and challenges, and the opportunities these
challenges present for policy makers and the industry. Here, you will
connect first hand with Industry leaders and forward thinkers offering
tangible ideas and practical applications for the self-care industry. With
two immersive days offering exclusive content and keynotes alongside
stimulating panel discussions and networking opportunities, the AESGP
Annual Meeting has everything you need to evolve the self-care
environment for the future.

09.00 to SESSION 1: Self-Care for Health

10.30 The concepts of health promotion and self-care emerged during 1970s,
primarily out of concerns about the limitation of professional health systems.
Since then, there has been rapid growth in this area, including evidence of
effectiveness of self-care interventions. While some promising self-care policy
programs have been implemented, they have been rather too few and too
isolated. One-off initiatives are not enough to create the fundamental shifts
in practice that are required in order to enable self-care for the benefit of
individuals and health systems. What is needed for self-care to be a global
health policy priority involving health ministers and policy makers at the
national and international levels? How to inspire sustained, comprehensive and
well-coordinated self-care policy initiatives at country and local levels?

11.00 to SESSION 2: How to Respond to Societal Concerns?

12.30 ocietal concern refers to hazards with the capability to generate socio-political
S
responses. Recent examples of societal concerns which may spring to mind
range from the future of nuclear power, global warming, control of terrorism to
the safety of certain widely used chemicals or use of plastics. These numerous
societal concerns are increasingly questioning the healthy functioning of
our regulatory systems and society at large. Deep caution is required when
incorporating societal concerns into risk decisions, especially where policy
and societal implications are high. This session will look into ways to effectively
address societal concerns and whether the industry shall take a stand on those.

14.00 to SESSION 3: ‘Nudging’ for Self-Care

15.30 The goal of public health policies is to steer citizens towards making positive
decisions as individuals and for society while preserving individual choice. Over
the past decades, advances in behavioral sciences have led to the increasing
use of nudging by government agencies to promote healthy lifestyle, preventive
health services, etc. Nudging offers policy makers an effective way to influence
citizens’ behaviour without further restricting freedom of choice, imposing
mandatory obligations or introducing new taxations or tax reliefs. This session
will discuss how nudging is used by governments to encourage self-care and
will look into ways the self-care industry is nudging toward responsible self-
care. The panelists will debate whether and how nudging can be used by the
consumer health industry to promote responsible self-care practices.

trends in self-care at a global level. The session therefore will update the
conference participants about the main global trends and drivers of the self-
care environment. .

09.00 to SESSION 5: Brands and Public Health

10.30 Brands are a principal asset for the development and the promotion of
self‑care. The value of brands is recognised across Europe; legislation provides
manufacturers with the possibility to apply for trademarks to protect their
brands with the objective to encourage and reward investment in innovation,
the manufacture of high quality products, their effective distribution and the
promotion of their benefits. The use of brands also results in a strong interest
from the manufacturers’ side in preserving consumers confidence in a product
and, consequently, maintaining a high level of quality. What do consumers
expect from brands? What is the true value of a brand today? How do brands
contribute to health and well-being? How does brand Industry contribute to
competitiveness and innovation?

11.00 to SESSION 6: Harnessing Real-World Evidence for Self-Care

12.30 eal-world (medical) evidence provides significant insight into
R
how a medicine performs or is used in real-world settings. The
ability to quickly transform real-world data sources such as
electronic medical records (EMR), ePrescriptions or information
we share on social media into evidence can improve health
outcomes for individuals by helping the self-care industry and
regulators to inform regulatory and commercial decisions. How
can we collect and analyse data available on the Internet? Can
it improve decision-making? Are regulators ready for that?

17.30 obody knows for sure how self-care, let alone society, will evolve. Trying to
N
predict exactly what will happen is almost impossible. In order to shed some
light into this black box we call ’Future’, we need to widen our perspective,
think about alternatives and consider different paths leading to different
futures. The last session will gather three experts and explore their far-ranging,
sometimes radical, visions of the future.
